Language In Media Analysis Part 1

We often don't browse articles from other countries unless we have foreign friends shouting them out, but we especially don't read articles from other languages unless there's a translated version. That got me thinking about the influence of language in Erep. Does it play a role in world politics and regional alliances?

I decided to conduct a census on world media: here is how the numbers are calculated.
The information here is not perfect keep in mind,

I've recorded the top 10, top rated, articles of every country and noted which language they were written in. This has given me a "language influence of media %".

In the United States 100% of its media, when I did my research, was written in English. So I counted the full active population towards the English population. Whereas only 20% of Albania's articles were written in English, so I counted 20% of their population and added it to the United State's numbers, and so on.

So you can see that I won't generate the same results 100% of the time, and there are reasons why this won't be completely accurate, but that aside here are the results.



The largest language in eRepublik media is Spanish


Spanish Media serves 23,688 citizens mostly in Latin America, Argentina, Spain, Chile, and Mexico make up the largest contribution towards the numbers.

Recently admin announced eRepublik would be adding 4 new nations, 2 being decided by users. Within the first 24 hours Cuba, and Ecuador received the most votes with a combined total of 6,700+ or 22% of total votes so far. This will certainly add to the Spanish speaking population of Erepublik over time.





Spainish Influence does stretch across other areas in the world too. Indonesia, and Egypt.

Interestingly, Egypt's largest language is Catalon at 70%. Catalon is the local language of Catalonia (NE Spain) and the Official language of Andorra. (not present in eRepublik) A large portion of the population is seeking Independence from Spain in IRL, and in eRepublik. I have run across articles in several different nations asking citizens to support a Free and Independent Catalonia. Although they are unlikely to ever convince admin to give them independence (see Kosovo) they have settled to colonize Egypt as their own.

Over half of the Spanish media is under the Sirius Bloc
but has a decent Asteria presence.



The second largest language in eRepublik (covering the most nations) is English


English is slightly smaller then their Spanish counterpart at 22,500 citizens, but is spoken in more nations across earth. It has a strong presence in eRepublik nations that don't coincide with their real world counter parts.

DIOISM - As long as I can remember, Pakistan has always had a huge English/American population. The First President of Pakistan was Dio Brando, born in IRL UK. He has had a profound impact on the English Media with "Dioism" and the establishment of eRepublik's first Theocratic government around his religion. It has attracted tons of supporters from across the United States and elsewhere, maintaining English as a dominant language.

Malaysia - Saw several waves of immigration from the early days of Erepublik. It started with real-life-Malaysians, with a minority of Americans, Greeks, and Brazilians. Soon Hungarians, Poles and Swedes overwhelmed the native population then later Serbs and Hungarians. Eventually Malaysia became the retirement community of America, the Florida of eRepublik. Although American influence has decreased there recently, the media is still dominated by English authors.

Japan - had a Japanese media years ago, but never matured to take over the country, the Otaku weaboos of Canada, US, Ireland, and UK maintain control of the nation.

North Korea - use to have a huge English presence, in 2009 North Korea got involved in the PEACE invasion of North America by attacking Far Eastern Russia on July 21 2009 in an attempt to block Russia from attacking North America.

Russia and her allies launched a counter strike into Hamgyong, which was conquered on July 25. Russia marched through Kangwon on July 26 and then took Hwangae the day after. Hwangae housed North Korea's only Q5 Hospital and so the vast majority of North Koreans resided there, when Hwangae fell on July 27 complete occupation was inevitable.

Since then North Korea has been occupied by either China, Japan, Taiwan, or Russia. It's English speaking population has completely left and has been replaced by ethnic speaking Koreans.





I was shocked to see English so widespread in places like Switzerland, Germany, Poland...
In IRL European schools, English is typically encouraged or taught as a secondary language.

The use of English in eRepublik media however might be a sign of the current geo-politics of the day since the United States, United Kingdom, and Ireland are slaves huge supporters of Poland and Sirius. Since it's so widespread across the world, it can be a common unifying language for the alliance.
