James and the Guppies

James sat in front of the aquarium,
watching the guppies move in and out of the plants.
The low hum of the filter mixed with the gentle splash of water recirculating was restful.
He closed his eyes for a minute.
When he opened his eyes and looked at the tank,
it seemed as if things had gotten into sharper focus.
A large male guppy left off from his endless pursuit of the females
and made his way through a cloud of his offspring to the front panel of glass.
Guppy and man regarded one another.
The guppy sai😛 “Praise to Thee, He that has created the world, and everything therein.
What is Thy will?”
Now James was somewhat shocked to be addressed in this fashion, and replie😛
“”Hey, it’s just me, an old man,
I bought the tank and you at a store,
and now you are a good thing, overdone.
There are four generations of guppies in that tank,
And when the young grow, it will be greatly overpopulated!”
“Will this happen in my lifetime, oh Great One?”, asked the guppy, somewhat worried.
“Maybe not ,” replied James,” You are pretty old, but it will happen in your offspring’s time”
“Praise be to Thee! Thou art all knowing, all wise. I am sure you will have an answer to the problem
when Thou wishes to solve it.”,
said the guppy, happily.
“Hmmm, how about setting up a food chain”. Asked James.
“I could buy some young Angelfish, which would eat the young and those not wise enough
to get out of the way.
However, the finest males would probably be slowed by those long fins,
and the stock would revert over time.”
“It is Thy will, and we will do Thy bidding”, said the guppy , piously.
“What shall I say unto the people?”
James thought.
The moving water caused patterns of light to shine from the tank.
James awoke.
He thought of a tiny world spinning around a yellow star.
In his mind, a Voice aske😛
“Yes?”
The problem remained.
