Imperialism – The Whole Point of eRepublik
When people work everyday to earn a wage, run companies to make money or any other ways of earning money, the only end point that money can be spent are on guns, advance training and for wars. In eRepublik, there are no other real use of cash apart from warring.
The problem with eRepublik is that it advertise itself as a social political game and some kind of second life game when in fact it is simply a war game.
To those people that suggest this game is only about communities and making friends, I would urge you all to step away from your computer and make some friends in real life. If you want to make internet friends there are better forums and games to do so and people should play eRepublik for what it is first and foremost ...a strategy war game.
eRepublik at this time is simple war game where there is the economics module to help the nation in financing wars, political module to select leaders to give direction to where the nation leads and the media module for propaganda purposes. It is really not that much dissimilar to playing 'Risk' except it is a team effort in controlling your nation.

International Political Alliances
eRepublik is a war game that is based on helping your nation to succeed and it needs allies in order to be successful. International political alliances should, if played properly, be based on making alliances towards benefiting your own nation as key objective.
Propaganda and trolling should be used with intention of doing something which benefit your nation and alliances should be made to get other nations to help your cause.
National Objective
Everything from improving the economy to bring more money to the nation, population boom to bring more power and money, alliances made should be with a view towards national conquest and imperialism.
The key here is to work out which nations should be the aim of its conquest. Balancing the long term chances of success to take and hold onto their regions and the value of their regions. In eRep, the most important conquest, and some say the only worthwhile conquests, are valuable high regions and each nation should look towards the valuable high regions it can take and hold onto and maneuver all international political alliances towards its objective.
The Point of the Game
If the nation is not strong enough to take and hold onto other regions, it should still be a goal to work towards. The intent should always be there. Otherwise, there is no point playing the game.
If the means are not there and it is in a relatively safe position, then it should use the opportunity to invest in advance training and boost its finances in order to improve its military strength to overtake other nations. But there should always be a long term aim of conquest behind each and every nation. It is the point of the game... or at least until the new modules comes out.

Terrific, clear-headed analysis.
My only wrinkle would be to say "don't underestimate the effect social networking and societal versimilitude has on retaining players, because as a wargame alone, this is a TERRIBLE wargame. There are dozens MMOs with far more interesting strategic options for the player.
The challenge to the government is to keep all players engaged at the same time.
Lately there's been less emphasis on the wargame and more on that versmellytude stuff you mentioned.
Hence the sloppy revolt.
This game was first and foremost a game of political wrangling. The introduction of the war module has corrupted it's original intent.
Hey LT, nice to see you out and about. Before the war module, how did the countries compete, just business?
voted, agreed.

I have a question, do you insist turning erepublik into http://www.imperiaonline.org/
I changed it now. Social networking etc is important. This is a team game after all. But the point is that atm, eRepublik is a war game with the social side and I hear too many people saying world peace and I play just for the social aspect. Not what this game is about.
Also, true in the fact that as a war game, eRepublik does not compare to others but the difference and why I play is because you can two click or spend as much time on it as you want.
Ivan actually, it is not me that is turning eRepublik into anything. It is the admins.
If the admins do things like using gold to buy avatars, or pictures, environmnet, more on the political aspects or the other kinda second life things then it is more of a virtual world.
But from what I hear, it is tank factories and more artilleries. They are making this game more of a war game than ever before.
I'm quoting myself @ admins' paper 2 months ago
only atoms: Pretty much, which made the world very protectionist in many ways. But there were also political dealings for tax changes, and the like. Hell, the country made most of it's money for a while with someone just playing the money markets.
I wonder sometimes if the admins had started the game with the war module if there would ever even have been a charter or anything like the government structures we have now.
Go back home Tim.
Dude you're totally right!
Why don't you join us at the CEP? You have the right ideas for our party.
Imperialism happens whether or not eCanada has a part in imperialst adventures. Let's pick our wars with care. There's nothing wrong with fighting against the Imperialst powers; and that opportunity will always exist.
the eUK will crash and burn..
Like countries are not imperialistic now. Hell, politics is about who has the bigger slice, who has the best recognition. WWI,WWII, Korea, Vietnam, The Coldwar all inspired modern technology. War fare is a huge part of actual life. I like how the admins are putting more realism into this game. So RL is Imperialistic, so should this game. But I liked your argument for being valid. Voted.
Octavian - I am quite happy with DAL at the moment. Thanks. =]
jfbranson - I think that is the point of my piece as well. If Canada had a population boom tomorrow, are the leaders going to tell people that the point of Canadians are to making money to fight for allies? Are there any imperialistic ambitions for Canada itself? Is the whole point of eLife so to fight for other nations? Where are the potential expansion points for Canada?
Particularly, the last question will be a hard one once people figure that out.
Duke Leto - cheers. =]
we'll jus t have to wait and see what V2 has instore now that I think about it.
"The challenge to the government is to keep all players engaged at the same time."
And this is where all Canadian governments and political parties have failed since the taking back of Canada. Those in politics spend most of their time trying to get or stay in power and have forgotten about the 90% of people who actually want to do something and feel that they are contributing to the Canadian experience.
Yeah sure there is a strategy to lay a beating on Phoenix, but in the meantime they have forgotten the every day player. I have seen a drastic increase in the number of new players who have just quit the game because they are bored. What is the fun in 2 clicking? What is the fun in taking part in a training war? Sure it is nice to take part in to rank up and gain experience, but to what end? There is nothing at stake and hasn't been for ages.
Do I advocate going on a risk rampage starting from Canada to make it to South America? No, but there are some things that could be done to make the game more interesting for the new people. Even if we are not going to attack the UK for a while, why not do a blocking attack rather than the Swedes?
Get Canadians involved.
^^^ grinch! I love you man - in a manly-warrior-arrr-arrr-arrr kinda way of course - you're like me, but with tact and better manners - maybe they'll listen to you better - run for congress or something
Jacobi and Congress: BOCK, BOCK, BOCK!!!
I think of eRep as a politics sim.
very nice article.
voted!
Come on eCanada! Lets go TAKE some land. If interest goes up when our country is removed, what will happen when we decide to take others? intrest returns!
Me run for congress?
What a horrifying thought. That would mean I would be stuck in Canada and not be able to go fight overseas
