Fool's Gold

Day 1,710, 11:55 Published in United Kingdom United Kingdom by Jamie2721

I want to make very clear this article is not calling people who pay real money for eRepublik gold fools nor is it criticizing the eRepublic company nor it's customer service.

However, it is foolish to spend gold while being oblivious to the reality of this game. This is purely an informative article and i will try not to reflect any personal opinion on the merits of buying gold

This is an article for anyone who buys gold (with real money), or is considering buying gold in this game.

"Looking at my own situation, i reckon, if i spent 99 Euros, i could become one of the elite, with my own shiny Q7. This would give me a big income to sustain myself and i would no longer need to ever spend more money and i will keep my 'elite' status."

This is the foolish view of eRepublik. eRepublic as a company, doesn't often find big spenders on online games willing to spend €99. Therefore their business strategy is (and always has been) getting these people to come back time and time again.

There will ALWAYS be another special offer.

Now this gets me to my point.

'If you are spending money to become in the 'elite' finding €99 is irrelevant. That will only keep you up for a period of months. You will need to be prepared to spend significant amounts of money every time eRepublik offers something new (which constantly happens)'

This is precisely the trap that people fall into. They've spent €99 thinking they have made it. Now they realize another €99 is needed. And what if they don't spend another €99? They will feel that their original investment has been 'wasted'.

So they spend it. Then the next offer comes along. They need to spend another €99 to keep up with the top. what if they decide to stop this time? They feel like they've just wasted €198 and that €99 doesn't seem such a large investment anymore in order to protect their earlier investment.

You can see how this continues.

In economics there is a term called 'Sunk Costs'.

A definition (from the internet) is 'A cost that has already been incurred and thus cannot be recovered. A sunk cost differs from other, future costs that a business may face, such as inventory costs or R&D expenses, because it has already happened. Sunks costs are independent of any event that may occur in the future.'

This basically means forget about your previous investments. Don't think about the past money you have invested. Think about the current money you have, and think 'Is it worth it?'. The answer may be YES. You may be prepared to continually spend 99 Euros. This will depend on your own personal financial situation. If YES, then you should happily continue to enjoy this gaming experience.

This article trys to talk to everyone, but in particular maybe a 17 year old who's just been let loose with their first credit card who's willing to spend their birthday money on reaching the top. This is the fools gold. I suggest if this is you, spend a smaller amount of money, it gives you a big boost and enjoy being part of the 'upper middle class' of the game.

'eRepublik offers you a choice. Never let yourself get into the situation where you feel like you need to spend money on this, it is always your own free choice. Before every payment, think about it for 5 minutes beforehand. This is true about anything you are choosing to buy'

Thanks if you read,
Jamie 2721

P.S. I just want to say thank you to anyone who voted me into congress (for the first time!). It was the best thing that happened to me in what was a very long day for me.

Currently a top tier company is €400 without the offer!

Niemand
Niemand Day 1,710, 12:11

€ 400 is far to much. 44% is not a bargain, still you need to invest to much.

Anyways, when you are rich and doesn't know on what you want to spend your money, eRepublik might be a good investment. Otherwise spending money on anything else is better than buying gold in a credit card game with (that must be said) a good community that is active outside eRepublik in chat rooms and/or forums.

Jamie2721
Jamie2721 Day 1,710, 12:13

Exactly Danie, it's a lot!

My advice isn't to spend the money or not to spend the money. My advice is only to think about it, think about how much they will get for their money and how much they are prepared to spend in the future.

Anotherlamedrunk Day 1,710, 12:27

Yep even with the discount, these things are way too overpriced
If i want to upgrade a food and two weapons companys from Q5 to Q7 its going to cost me £310 IRL

If it was about a quarter of that, i could see myself spending some money on this game again

A very good article. As long as there is a choice I persist in playing this game, despite being frequently disappointed with the admins' decisions. The rich keep getting richer but I found comfort in being part of the "middle eClass".

Cheers from an also fledgling congressman.

I'm 17 and don't have a credit card and I'm not dumb enough to spend money on this Game.
After all who cares if I'm the low class, its really just the people on the game that make it worth playing.

Groundskeeper Willy
Groundskeeper Willy Day 1,710, 13:59

Exactly Alleyrat, I have spent no real money on this game, and I've been having a great time. I earned all 100 of the gold I used to own.

Thanks for the comments

I agree Alley, it's a bit like football, if you need to go to a big fancy stadium and pay to see Man United or Arsenal to have a good day then fair enough, but some people have just a good a day put supporting Barnsley or St Mirren

You hit the nail on the head. I say spend your money on something that will give you a continuing return, whether materially or emotionally.

Until they allow Q7 Food to double the amount of wellness that you can use during the day, I wouldn't waste my Gold on it. Maybe they should permit people to use up to 240 units of one type of food per day, based upon builldings. The type you use would be based upon what you could afford. That would give value to higher quality food companies.

Prince Sheogorath
Prince Sheogorath Day 1,710, 14:32

The admins really screwed themselves with the promotions. Now, people only buy gold during the 30% more gold promotion. People only upgrade companies/training grounds/rocket factories during promotions.

I barely buy enough gold to retain silver on the loyalty program now, soon it will fall to bronze. And that's not just because I like the cute message from Plato telling me I'm awesome and he's going to give me 30 extra days to change my mind&buy gold before I get dropped back down to bronze.

Prince Sheogorath
Prince Sheogorath Day 1,710, 14:35

Also gold is still valued too high in game. Q6+ companies take £100s of real life investment, and you need a lot of them in game to really see a benefit from them.

Sparty44
Sparty44 Day 1,710, 14:43

if they made it cheaper surely more people would be likely to buy gold?

Ex Diaz 3bz
Ex Diaz 3bz Day 1,710, 14:58

from my POV , there's no need for buying gold ..

because you can save your gold little by little from SS or BHM ... but , buying gold is quite reasonable too for they that don't want to wait for that ...

but i think , 300G / £100 is a little bit over priced for an under 20 like me ...
and i don't even see any benefit from buying gold using my 3 months money for just a Game

Great article. I couldn't agree more. And that's coming from an avid comic collector. You spend the money for the love of the hobby, not the return of the investment.

That being said, I personally wouldn't buy gold myself. But for those that do, do it for the fun, it's your hard earned cash. Spend it as you like. But like Jamie said, be realistic in the fact.

Niemand, I don't mean to offend you, or anyone else that would take offense from this, but i'm sure ANYONE can think of atleast a dozen better ways to spend your money, even when filthy rich.

Lady Macbeth II
Lady Macbeth II Day 1,711, 08:59

Ex Diaz 3bz: can't agree with you. You save gold with SS only if you spend enough gold to upgrade it to Q3 or, even worse, if you pay gold for training.
Getting BH.. Again, without spending gold on Q++ rocket factory, i doubt that you'll have a big chance to get a BH in 4th division (even in 3rd).
I find it that day by day the discrepancy between the Poor and the Rich in eRep is getting bigger and bigger, which is quite a bad way of running an online game.

Sukraa

Iv'e used real money to buy crap in another game and regretted doing it. There's so many better ways to spend your money, like on alcohol, hookers and drugs. Err, I mean on flowers... yeah flowers.

All Q1-6 companies are massively unprofitable now, and Q7 is too if you employ anyone:
