Expedition Arcadia: (Wanted) A Few Good Shepherds

§▲§Past: Origins of the Garden§▲§

~~Les Bergers d’Arcadie

"The origin of the designation Acadia is credited to the explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano, who on his 16th century map applied the ancient Greek name "Arcadia" to the entire Atlantic coast north of Virginia. "Arcadia" derives from the Arcadia district in Greece which since Classical antiquity had the extended meanings of "refuge" or "idyllic place.”
The Dictionary of Canadian Biography says: "Arcadia, the name Verrazzano gave to Maryland or Virginia 'on account of the beauty of the trees,' made its first cartographical appearance in the 1548 Gastaldo map and is the only name on that map to survive in Canadian usage. In the 7th century, Samuel de Champlain fixed its present orthography, with the 'r' omitted, which carried through in a succession of maps, to its resting place in the Atlantic Provinces of Canada."

I’d like you all to try a little harder. I’m gonna need the help, plz

So it would appear I’m back to playing a game I’ve tried repeatedly to leave behind. A week ago, it was a bit of a rush to eat my first piece of food since August and make a few CAD to build back an industrial base.
Perhaps seeing that I was in a transitional period, trying to decide whether to stay or go, a kind Shepherd forwarded me a very generous loan to get things kick started. And I’m so glad he did just in time, since my 27 vacant lands would have been rendered useless in this last update, and rebuilding only days later would have meant a much higher start-up cost. Lady Luck shines on as the journey out towards Graceland starts again, along with poor boys and pilgrims as companions. Glad to have you all there.

Of course, what’s really needed are a few Good Shepherds to guide the way. You see, I’m feeling a little in the dark now that I’ve taken the oath to swear off all non-eRep formats. In other words, I’m steering clear of IRC, the eCan forums, party forums, and whatever greasemonkey gizmos come this way. While it would be easy blame the privacy paranoia for driving me into the arms of a Protect Internet Protocal Address (PIPA) political party, it’s much more simple than that.

Keeping track of multiple forum accounts and hanging out on IRC plain takes up too much time. eRep sucks up enough time in the day without adding on extra layers of complexity. I enjoy the fact that I can work 30 times a day with two clicks now. I like this direction of the game. I celebrate and sing these updates. I think we should all be moving towards a state of “Arcadia,” a symbol of pastoral simplicity. As explained by the Wiki: “Arcadia does not carry the connotation of a human civilization; Arcadia is presented as the spontaneous result of life lived naturally, uncorrupted by civilization.

So, I find it unfortunate to say this, but eCanada has become much too civilized for me to keep up with the goings-on in the Courts, behind Congress Doors, and all other party-affiliated forums, as much as these are highly informative and entertaining. This information blackout leaves me to wander throught the media, often quite in the dark. So I will be mistaken often and will bump up against you with misinformed comments, spouting of days-old details found scattered through articles and shouts. But I hope to do right by turning to those like Alias Vision to help show the way. Since it’s a long and darkened road through each month’s round of elections and associated crises, I’m hoping to find a few more Shepherds along the way that won’t confuse me with misdirection, or throw me off track with their irony, or set their raving sheepdogs on my ass.

Looking for a little direction and a few friendly pointers because I’m trying real hard to get where I’m going this time around. So I’m hoping we can all just be cool.

§▲§Future: ‘Lost Tomes of Paradise’ Regained§▲§

In a desolate valley along the Applachian chain, a man stoops into an excavated pit. He is scraping, carefully brushing away ages of dust layered in sediment. He moves slowly, laboriously, partly from the delicate work at hand and partly from the scorching light of an unfiltered sun beating down on a parched landscape, burning all to ash, drying all to dust.

He is searching. He knows a treasure lies somewhere here, though such a thing could never have existed, or at least never have been allowed to. Sweat drips and dust flies as a brush swishes behind the trowel's path.
Something clinks.

An hour later, only the triangular outline of a metallic object has been so far uncovered. Even with an assistant to help record the findings, the work is slow and meticulous. Caution is not an option.

“So I don’t get why they would bury it. I mean, it’s not actually ‘lost’ if there is a record of it being here. Seems silly to call it that.” She goes back to chewing her gum, an expensive accessory to her retro-chic.

“The Acadians, as some have called them, wanted to leave behind the things that could not be brought with them in the Final Migration north. Some things were big and needed too much power; others were smaller, yet had too much.” His assistant rolls her eyes. Chiasmus was so passé now, as she had informed him previously.

“Pass me the briefcase. I think we’re ready.”

Taking off his gloves, he reaches in to sweep off a fine powdering of remaining dust. His fingertips come away with a wetness and a penetrating cold. Through fingerprints in the thin frost coating a burnished surface, he can see the glint of iterated markings.

Minutes later, the lid closes and is locked.

SAWC, how about this one:
I've collected 12 energy bars and 10 sets of bazooka pieces. Months ago that might have gotten me a BH if I waited for the right battle. But those requirements must have gone up a lot since then.
Any idea how long I should keep collecting until I have a fair shot? (probably a long, long time)

Use this link (you'll need to manually put in the info while API is brokt)

You'll need at least 800k to win if you choose the right battle.

ha, yeah if you click on the first picture, I can see how you'd read Acacia into it ~~ those crazy Masons. Bingo is right, too. The Captain seems to know that Septimus may make an appearance later.

Thanks for the BH tips. That's a whackload of bazookas needing to be stockpiled.

Shame we can't vote an article multiple times.

I vote once because I enjoyed it.

I would vote a second when I figure the references out.

Finally I would love to vote it up when I finally get it. :p

AV, since you’ve been one of the best for shedding light on things, shepherding us along the way towards the current election this time around (among other good media you’ve done), it seems right to return the favour about those references:

Past: You have the painting(s) and now here is something to consider in future “Pasts”
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arcadia_(play)

Present: The 90s were great and this may have been one of the greatest to come out of it. It’s referenced in olivermellors’ articles at the end but didn’t want to fill the text with too many links, so here’s the quick fix: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VExQS6Myrm0

Future: Some say it ends in fire or in ice. Why not have both?
Well, in the beginning…

He quotes Frost and you talk bazookas??? He draws fractals and you obsess about BH medals??? Maybe I am off my rocker after all.

As a newer player, I like your attitude re: the metagame. Why add that extra layer of complexity?

Muglack

You're halfway to figuring out why "Cajun" is a derogatory term.

Plugson

Plugson Day 1,534, 22:42

To be fair, oliver, I asked for guidance and that was the most explicit question I posed. I'm glad that people came forward to help me figure that part out about getting a BH. There are some fine gameplay stewards in eCanada for sure.

As for the rest of what I was asking, mainly to be helped along when things get murky, I trust those like you, Muglack, Rigour6, and Alias Vision will point things out. For example, I never saw the similarity between Jeff Bridges and Rigour6 but it fits perfectly (along with the NB-Acadian connection). Maybe Muglack will provide me the other half of the "Cajun" reference, though I guess that's a bit further south.

As for the Frost, I can see why you were lead in that direction and hope you can appreciate why it fits better with another iteration of his work:

I think that's the great thing about art (Classical or Pop or in-between). It can replicate itself ad infinitum in new forms when we care to pay some care and attention to what came before.

Glad you didn't quit. But remember that as your eLife shines, your RL decays.
I say we need zen. \o/

Plugson

Plugson Day 1,537, 17:47

"But remember that as your eLife shines, your RL decays."
That is exactly my problem. I believe it can be summarized in the second law of thermodynamics:
▲S = q / T

The half-life of a married player is also much shortened, too.

Gherk
46
Gherk Day 1,537, 20:53

In a game that has no end, does a little misdirection really take you off course?

I leave you with the sound of one hand clapping.

Plugson
35
Plugson Day 1,537, 22:10

Direction exists in whatever course we aim for. It's unique to each player but can combine to a bigger goal if enough people throw their weight into it.

Mine's getting a BH with 30 bazookas. Hopefully people weren't screwing with me and I waste all my bars and bazookas in one shot. But thanks for the wise ponderings, Gherk. I'll add it to the pile I keep olivermellors' for safekeeping (Runawayson was apt).
After that wise paradox, I think Gherk might make a good sphinx too:
