eUniversity and how to truly make it a university in eRepublik

by Zacharia Raven

For USA readers:

This article was published in eFinland ( original article http://www.erepublik.com/en/article/euniversity-and-how-to-truly-make-it-a-university-in-erepublik-2143903/1/20), but I feel, that USA has maybe the greatest potential for eUniversity, especially on the resarch-side. This is because there has been many research or close-enough-articles by capable authors, who would be great professors in eUniversity.

I want to thank Soil3d for publishing this in the USA.

Abstract

eUniversity is an excellent way to improve the education of new players locally and internationally by combining knowledge and ideas from different countries. Taking the heavy load either entirely or partly off from the governments should lead to more sustainable improvement in mentoring and tutoring programs. eUniversity has the potential to create a new - user made - module to eRepublik; Education and research.

In order to be a "university" and not just a elementary school for beginners, it should also offer research material by its professors – or deans. Local and international researches would definitely be supreme tools in education offered in the eUniversity - and other educational institutes in eRepublik also.

eUniversity must be totally free from political, military and economical control of any governments or organizations. Only through independent administration and control can eUniversity be taken seriously, and its education and research be seen as valid.

Introduction

eUniversity is currently run by Russia, Ukraine and Belarus. The author run into it when the first official article was released (Mr.Alex Great, 10/12). In the article eUniversity is described as international network of educational institutions in eRepublik.

Currenlty eUniversity is small and offers only general ideas of educating beginners via joint international efforts. It promises to educate abiturients without IRC or Skype etc. requirements.

The basic idea is, that beginners - abiturients - are given quests to perform, and that these tasks would get more difficult later. Education process would include some kind of study groups, which infact should make the process more appealing.

Calling this system University sounds bit exaggerated. The goal of this article is to deepen the idea of eUniversity so, that it would fulfill the common requirements of a university. To be valid and respectable eUniversity will have to meet several conditions, of which this article tries to list also.

This article is published in eFinland, and it is linked to all deans of eUniversity for – hopefully – future improvements of eUniversity. This article was written in one sit, after an hour of gym. It might be utopist and make suggestions that could never work.

Education

The education given by eUniversity is described in the article by Mr.Alex Great (10/12) as follows

1.Abiturient must complete an introductory task

Introductory task (in eRussia)
1.eRussian citizenship
2.have any avatar in the game (other than the "starting")
3.Vote for the article about eUniversity enrollment. Post his vote number in comments
4.Be a member (or apply) MU
5.Fill in the introductory form with information about themselves

2.Study groups are formed according to the results of introductory tasks. Once enrolled, the student receives assignments from supervisors through private messages in the game.
3.For the quests completing student receives buns (up to 27 level) and receives a task of a higher difficulty.
4.The complexity of tasks increases each time student receives a new task or or enters a new course.

After graduation student receives a personal academic badge. Alumni list

The process is simple and easy to understand. This should be just very general education given in the eUniversity. Further education should include deeper knowledge of all modules of eRepublik. Political, military and economic lectures, and case- and maybe task-type exercises, would ensure that the abiturients would have basic knowledge, and if they choose, also a chance to get advanced knowledge of the modules.

The basic knowledge would cover the current game mechanics, and give tools to keep track of the changes. Graduates should be able to enjoy the game and avoid most common mistakes in their early eLives. This would be achieved by making the abiturient actually trying different modules, and guiding at the same time. If possible, study-groups and other team-work would be also used to prevent abiturients becoming too isolated and thus bored. This means, that out-of-game societies should also be included in the basic knowledge.

The advanced knowledge would go beyond current game mechanics and guidance. History and more analytic view would be taken in the education. Abiturient would start answering to Who What When Why and How- questions, instead of just memorizing basics. This demands quite a lot from the deans, but success in advances knowledge education would lead to the birth of a new module – education and research. This will be handled more precisely later in the article.

Research

A university is not only about education. It is sometimes even more about research. eUniversity should produce research both internationally and locally. Good research would then be used in the education process. Research topics would be approved by local and or international staff of the eUniversity.

In Erepublik, possible research fields are plenty. Politics offer millions of possibilities from analyzing the personal traits of presidents elected to study about the concrete effects of AFA in the USA. Research methods mostly same as in real life: statistics, sending questionnaires, reading and analyzing articles, forum writings etc and so on.

Later on when there would be published research articles, they also could be part of new research as sources or under further investigation, or even ridiculing the conclusions of the older research.

Degrees

With research there should be more levels of education for the students. These could be

1 Graduate Alumni
2 Bachelor Alumni
3 Master Alumni
4 Doctor Alumni

Graduate Alumni would need only to graduate from the eUniversity, either with basic or advanced knowledge.

Bachelor Alumni would be required to conduct one local research, which is reviewed and accepted by local staff of eUniversity.

Master Alumni would conduct one international research in English, which is reviewed and accepted by the international staff of the eUniversity

Doctor Alumni would conduct two major international researches, which would be reviewed and accepted by international staff of the eUniversity. Either one of them expand the general knowledge of eRepublik in a manner that could lead to game mechanic changes or other major event, such as large scale local or international attention, leading into major changes in the society or societies.

Without noticeable attention or changes, Alumni would be granted Licenciate degree.

Doctor Alumi requirements are maybe harsh, but they encourage active and capable players to do actual in-game researches by interviewing players, admin ect, and then making the game better for all players. Should this be achieved even once, eUniversity would forever be remembered, and the research published by its members would receive larger audience.

The New Module

Combining education and research would create totally new field of gaming experience in eRepublik. This could attract former presidents, alliance leaders and other people fed up with day-to-day politics and military conflicts. This way eUniversity would prevent the brain-leak when instead of quitting and eDying old players would be doing research and educating others, eventually improving the whole game.

Organisation of eUniversity

eUniversity should consist of international and local staff. Every country should have principle and if possible, a vice principle. The principles would sit in the international staff, and form their own local staff. International staff would together decide education changes, and also review and accept international researches. Local staff would put international strategies into action on local level, and also accept local research.

Local principles of new countries would be chosen by the international staff from all volunteers. This means also, that eUniversity would not be part of any government, nor would it members be chosen by any congress. It would have supreme autonomy over all its matters. This would ensure the purity of the education and research.
This does mean also, that members of eUniversity can face heat from their own governments or congresses. All principles could be fired or demoted by international staff of eUniversity for whatever reasons.

It is important to prevent manipulation of research results and other corruption in either education or research. Propaganda, lies and slander would stain eUniversity image, and nullify all its further contributions. One way to do this is to force researches to keep their source material available to other staff for deeper re-evaluation of the study, and then possibly publishing it corrected. In education internal moderation of the material should be sufficient.

Professors and the Next Steps

All professors in eUniversity should be at least Bachelors. This would require that the current deans conduct a local research of some topics. This is important to give them any credentials to work in the international staff. Also it would give an interesting start for the eUniversity, when there would be research articles labeled eUniversity at least in three countries. Not to mention the research process of making questionnaires and interviews. It should rouse some attention in the beginning, which eUniversity needs to become successful.

Later on all international staff members should be at least Master Alumni to be able to review and accept Master and Licentiate/ Doctor researches.

From current situation, the deans of the eUniversity should ensure that it is free of government control. If this is not possible right away in the founding members, it should be done gradually. It should be the requirement of future local universities.

First researches should also be started immediately by founding members, to give the needed attention for eUniversity, and creditability to the staff members.

Improvements in the education should be started as soon as possible, and also create more concrete plans for the actual teaching methods.

Expected results

eUniversity would take responsibility of educating new players. This would not force governments to give up their own programs, but would be more efficient and have continuity in the education process. Research would increase knowledge and understanding of the game and the players. It would also create tools for governments and congresses for future decision making, Most of all, education and research together would create more things to do for the experienced players, thus creating totally new – player made- module.

Conclusions

eUniversity has great potential to become something totally new and thrilling in Erepublik. Combining Wiki knowledge with tutor and Mentor programs and new player guides into centralized, international institution of research and education would prevent older players leaving without passing on their wisdom, help new players into easy, fun and interesting start, and with advanced knowledge also give historical views on politics and military events so, that they truly grasp the game and what it’s all about.

Current plans are good, but should be only the start. Without research it is not a university, but elementary school. Dividing education into basic and advanced would give the players the chance to learn basic mechanics and then receive deeper knowledge with historical and analytical view of past events.

eUniversity should give several degrees with requirements of local and international researches conducted. The Doctor Alumni decree would be granted only, if at least of the researches done would have local or international effect in society, create large scale attention, or result in game changes.

eUniversity must be free of all political control to keep education and research pure and reliable. eUniversity should thus have total autonomy on all its matters.
