Hello eJapan and the eWorld, welcome to the culture section of the Sotoba Newspaper! Here we cover anime to random facts about Japan which is what today's article is about in the "Did you know" section. Today's "Did you know" is about vending machines and how they play a key important role in almost every person living in Japan.

To start things off vending machines in Japan have some of the most weirdest items to some of the most common items, from drinks and foods to clothing ware and fresh produce to beer and batteries and umbrella's. It blows my mind to think that they have some many different types of vending machines that have so much of what a normal store would have here in America, normally we would just go out and get these items in a large or small retail store's, but in Japan its totally different they have the option to goto store's or goto a vending machine to pick up what they need in a fast manner.

I think that Japan has so many vending machines because of the fact that they have a large chunk of the world's population on such a small island and have to get people's daily needs and wants to them in the heavily populated area's of Japan, with that said thats why they have so many different types of vending machines that cover a large variety of items so people can just pick it up quickly instead of having to run into a store.

Yes, that is a beer vending machine!

I knew, have seen them so often in jdorama's... and I'm jealous.
Although I imagine that food in that form isn't the healthiest..

I was always amused by the beer and ciggarrette vending machines.. how would ID work?
Or does Japan not have laws like that? O.o

Too bad those Hot Meal vending machines tend to break quite often :／

I'm sure they'll find a way to stop that.. eventually. They've already found a way to get rid of 'convenience stores' with vending machines! x)

The drinking age is 20, but you can buy from the beer machines as long as you have the money + willing to risk it with the police if they catch you lol.
