Australian Independence, A (IRL) Canadian Perspective

Day 367, 08:34 Published in United Kingdom United Kingdom by intrepid132

So, it looks like Australia is independent, at long last. And not through the expected hard-fought independence battle, either. Tim09 wrote an article (http://www.erepublik.com/en/article/australia-to-gain-independence-700078/1) that announced that the key australian players have signed off on a deal with Indonesia to free up three former australian regions. The major restriction is that Australia is not allowed to join PEACE. So far this is all info you could get from reading the above article. So why am I writing?

As a real world Canadian, and a rather new player in eRepublik, I don't have the personal connection to the issue. Quite simply, I have no vested interest in the proceedings. I see this as an advantage, others may disagree.

First of all, I would like to state that I believe in Independence for all nations unjustly taken over. Australia is no exception. It is an honest and just cause to free a people, and in that, I congratulate Tim09, Zaney, widdows, and all of the other Australian and British players who supported this in any way possible, from negotiations, to the fateful fight for NSW, and to this momentous occasion.

I know that some people will think that the contract with Indonesia is a sell-out. It should have been all or nothing, "Give me Liberty, or Give Me Death!" sort of thing. I have yet to see the actual contract, but from Tim's article, it sounds like Indonesia is putting very few limitations on a free Australia. Not joining either of the major alliances is no major problem. Australia can be part of ATLANTIS in all but name, unless Indonesia is involved in the battle.

However, I will qualify this support, as I have not seen the actual contract, as it is apparently under some last minute negotiations. If Indonesia should violate any part of that contract, war can be the only result. And if it comes to war, I for one will not shy away from supporting Australia in any way I can!
