Join the new world

The following article is an entry into Fionia’s writing contest. The topic is what I would do if I were given the opportunity to lead a newly formed nation in the New World.



In The Beginning

I would begin by surrounding myself with the absolute best and brightest citizens my nation had to offer. Every new nation has a multitude of issues to face and overcome as it forges its own identity in the New World. Every neighbor is a potential friend or enemy, there are few companies to employ and produce enough products to serve the growing population, the threat of a political takeover is always in the air, and the list goes on. Even if I dedicated every moment of every day, I could never hope to build a nation on my own. And certainly not a nation that would survive beyond my tenure. Which is why I need the best team my country has to offer, and together, we will build a nation to rival all others.


Government

As President, I would task Congress on day one to draft a National Constitution to clearly establish the powers and authority of the Government. I would take great care to ensure that this Constitution is based heavily on actual game mechanics as apposed to role-play. This Constitution would establish a two-consecutive term limit on the President and every member of the Cabinet. Meaning, neither the President nor any of the Cabinet members can serve more than two consecutive months in their position. This is to encourage a constant refreshing and rotation in the Executive. I would also advocate for making all Congressional discussions public. This only makes sense considering nothing that would truly harm national security would be discussed in Congress anyway.


Military

The Constitution would also establish the official national military. The National Military would be headed by the Secretary of Defence, who serves the President, and the day-to-day operations would be run by the Generals, Colonels, Captains, etc, who would serve under the SoD.

The National Military would consist of three key parts:

The Special Forces: These would be the heavy hitters of the military. The Colin Lantrip’s and Josh Frost’s if you will.

The Army: This would be the bulk of the national military.

The National Guar😛 Would be the place for new players and two-clickers to contribute what they can, when they can. Every little bit helps. Especially in the beginning.

Economy

The economy is screwed eight ways from Sunday, so there is little you can do here. But I would put the Government to work establishing Communes to employ and supply the National Military. I would also open a few companies to employ new low-skilled workers in the hopes of getting them to stay for a while, as apposed to just letting them slip through the cracks.


The biggest problem I expect to face....would have to be picking a side. In the three years that I have been a citizen in the New World, I have had the privilege of being a leader at the founding of a new country several times, the most recent being the deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of New Zealand before it fell to the Serbs. The topic we discussed the most, besides PTO, is who’s side are we on? Which major alliance do we want to join? Do we want to play it safe and be neutral? Whenever this issue comes up, I always have the same policy: Pick a side. Neutrality doesn’t work, because this is a game, and everyone is a target eventually. As President, I would pick whatever side I thought would best serve the interests of my country, and I would roll with the punches.
