Around the World #23; Here Comes A New Challenger

Day 1,833, 23:50 Published in Canada Canada by Shoi12

So, how has the week passed in the New World? Who has made progress? Who has been dealt the scent of defeat? Find out in this week's edition of Around the World!

MAJOR WARS

The Iberian Split
Start

Belligerents: Portugal vs. Spain
Results: Spain controlled Portugal for the most part for quite a few weeks, with the Portuguese failing to capture provinces often and for very long. This time was different, however, as Portugal managed to hold onto Norte, and turn its freedom fighting movement into successful revolts in both Lisboa and Algarve. Not stopping there, Portugal won Centro in full-on combat, leaving only Alentejo to be recaptured. Spain hasn't released its full military against the Portuguese, or at least that's what appears to be the case. Nevertheless, Portugal is making a very strong start in its latest war for independence.

Winner (this week): Portugal (devastating)
Winner (campaign): Portugal (devastating)

The Polish Unification War
Start

Belligerents: France vs. Poland
Results: Everyone who expected France to put up a fight, raise your hands and be burned by the lasers above you! The last remnants of France's once vast holdings was attacked by the Poles, and whatever troops were fighting for the French side clearly weren't enough, as Polish troops took over half of the already measly le sud de France. Few players expected France to even show up to the battlefield, and the French have not done anything to prove otherwise. Perhaps France's troops could be better used supporting other nations. But France won't be left with any land at this rate.

Winner (this week): Poland

The Chilean Counterattack
Before

After

Belligerents: Argentina vs. Chile
Results: Chile may have taken a step away from South America by switching their focus to Australia, but to their credit, they've held their own against Argentina very well. Chile cleaned up Argentina puppet Bolivia's western chunk, though Bolivia remains on the map still thanks to the region of Santa Cruz. Chile managed to take several hard-earned victories and recaptured a few regions of their mountainous home, while Paraguay's entry into the war and quick wipe resulted in an equally quick revolution, leaving the Paraguayans independent again (heyyy you know who 😁. Chile could further push the initiative and seriously threaten Argentinian independence.

Winner (this week): Chile
Winner (campaign): Chile (devastating)

The Australian Independence War
Start

Belligerents: Australia, Argentina vs. Chile, New Zealand
Results: The Aussie revolution has begun! With Chile controlling the entire nation, the grassroots movement had picked up steam, with Australia at one point controlling three provinces and looking unstoppable. However, in part because of an impending Peru NE and also because of increased Chilean efforts, Australia has since receded back to Northern Territory. To the south, Argentina is closing in on yet another wipe of the kiwis, with only Auckland under New Zealand's control. If (or when) Argentina wipes New Zealand, the war in South America may spill over to Oceania. Australia will need the extra push against Chile.

Winner (this week): Australia, Argentina (minor)
Winner (campaign): Australia, Argentina (minor)

The Balkan Suppression
Before (Greek Epic)

Start

The Greek Epic
Belligerents: Greece vs. Bulgaria, FYROM, Serbia
Results: Greece really can't catch a break. With three fronts, it's hard for any nation to get any sort of positive result. The Greeks had fought admirably and had even been winning the war at a certain point, but at the end of the day, three powerful nations versus one powerful nation usually ends in a victory for the side with numbers. Serbia continued its way through Italy and reached the Ionian Islands, capturing it and Peloponnese, while also gaining some Italian regions. FYROM ironically captured Macedonia, and the Bulgarians infiltrated Thrace. Greece can't and won't win this war on its own.

Winner (this week): Bulgaria, FYROM, Serbia (devastating)
Winner (campaign): Bulgaria, FYROM, Serbia

The War for Ukrainian Independence
Belligerents: Ukraine, Turkey vs. Hungary, Moldova
Results: In the latest attempt by the Ukrainians to break free, Ukraine secured first Podolia then Donbas, while the Turks distracted the Hungarians enough with their own NE. While Moldova took over Podolia from Ukraine fairly quickly, Ukraine lasted long enough in Donbas to retake Taurida before a wipe, sacrificing the Turkish front to create some sort of protection: a Hungarian attack and victory in Taurida would open up the Turks to attack once again, a prospect that Hungary is looking to avoid. With Podolia falling back to Ukrainian control, Ukraine is on the map with two provinces, but is on life support and needs to secure more land.

Winner (this week): Ukraine, Turkey
Winner (campaign): Ukraine, Turkey

The Battle for Scandinavia
Start

The Finnish-Estonian War of Monotony (part deux)
Belligerents: Finland vs. Estonia
Results: Not even Poland can stop the two longtime rivals from battling each other. As soon as Finland got the chance, troops started pouring across the gulf into Estonia, like so many times, so many times before. With Latvia focused on Sweden, however, there may be just an ounce of hope that the victories are not for temporary gain. Estonia nears another wipe, as Finland continues to do quite well against little resistance. With on;y two regions left for the Estonians, it may be time to start sending the troops to keep the nation alive. Or, you know, just keep doing whatever it is they're doing.

Winner (this week): Finland
Winner (campaign): Finland

The Swedish Coastal Barrage
Belligerents: Sweden vs. Latvia, Lithuania
Results: Sweden's transformation from a mighty ONE force to an Asgard national liberator has been very interesting, to say the least. Ever since the first shots were fired to free Belarus, Sweden's often had to deal with two fronts at once. Facing both Latvian and Lithuanian invasion, the Swedes countered Lithuania's attacks and at one point controlled Lithuania Minor, while keeping the Latvian gains to Gotland. Sweden's management of two fronts is extraordinary thanks to its experience battling against ABC. If Sweden can get a break or two, or perhaps direct assistance from Finland, Sweden could conceivably even win.

Winner (this week): DRAW
Winner (campaign): DRAW
