Alliance Referendum [RESULTS]

Day 1,878, 02:23 Published in Canada Canada by Wilhelm Gunter

Well the results are in.

A few comments first (yes, I like to drag things out!):

I was disappointed with the turnout. Although many of the PM's likely went to dead citizens, or on a slow descent towards death, the Referendum produced about 100 less votes than the last CP Election, something which I was hoping to match. The Referendum had 327 Respondents; our last CP election 432 votes.

I found only one citizen who, either intentionally spoiled their ballot, or was impersonated, by using an invalid Security Code.

There were many comments written in the space provided at the end of the Referendum. A common theme was why EDEN and TWO were not included as options.- at least 2 voters refused to participate by PM'ing their complaint to me directly.

The reason they were excluded was because the Canadian government, over the past several weeks or even months, had debated the issue. We had come to a general conclusion that neither TWO nor EDEN were alliances we wanted to be a part of. That left the three options you found in the Referendum: Circle of Trust, Asgard, and Remain Neutral (no alliance membership).

Before anyone goes off the handle and starts claiming it was undemocratic not to include TWO or EDEN, let me say this: What was presented to you was a Referendum, and not an Opinion Poll. An opinion poll would be more likely to include all the the options; A Referendum is worded and developed by the Government to serve a more narrow purpose. That was what this was.

As a Reminder, the Question was worded this way: "Which eRepublik alliance would you like to see Canada pursue membership in?"

The Results

Almost 2 out of every 3 eCanadians who voted, voted for Asgard, an alliance of Sweden & Finland. A majority of Congressmen also voted this way, and our country President Rylde is an unabashed supporter of Asgard. And with such a margin of victory in his election as CP, it is clear that Rylde now has all sorts of legitimacy to formally enter into negotiations with this alliance.

With the exception of the Sons of Anarchy, every other segment of eCanadian society voted over 50%, and usually well over that mark, to pursue Asgard. eCanada's largest party was no exception. As a member of this party, and privy to the internal dialogue of the party, I was surprised the support for CoT was not higher than this. Exactly half of all CPF'ers turned out to vote.

With a support of Asgard that almost mirrors the national rate, Clan Wolf's low turnout rate of 40% was probably not surprising, since one of it's founding principles was an ingame only approach to things.

The Party of our CP, the 73% support for Asgard should come as no surprise. A solid 59% of the party made it out to their local polling stations.

Although overwhelmingly supporting Asgard at the highest rate of any party, the party leadership must be disappointed that only 30% of the members bothered to cast a vote.

With a turnout rate of 46%, Sons of Anarchy was the only party which did not achieve a majority support for Asgard. Surprisingly, this party had the highest support of any segment of our population to remain out of either alliance.

A voting turnout rate of 25%.

A voting turnout rate of 19%.

A voting turnout rate of 38%.

The trend continues of majority support for Asgard, even among our smallest parties.

I have often thought that those who are not members of political parties in the New World don't pay attention or participate in political matters. Obviously, this is not so. When 20% of all participants in the Referendum have no political affiliation, that raises the question of why. Could it be that that they feel marginalized? Or are they cynical about political involvement? Too much time commitment and would rather focus on military matters? In any event, those in this segment of our population also reflected the national norm - almost 2 of 3 respondents supported Asgard.

On behalf of the eCanadian government, we thank you for making your wishes known.
