A Blueprint for the Future #2

Day 777, 05:16 Published in Norway Norway by Yan Hoek

With all the current controversy in our country's politics at the moment I thought for my second round of ideas I'd tackle congress and how a few simple changes could really spice things up.

1) Change the name of congress to suit each country.* Yep, it is that simple.

At the moment every country is run by a Congress. But how about we were run by a Storting (or Riksdag or a Parliament or even a Lok Sabha, depending on which country you live in). It wouldn't take much to alter the code to enable it. And it doesn't change any of the underlying abilities of the congress, it just personalises it a little.

2) Congressmen get their 5 Gold reward and medal at the end of their term.

Why? When I was a member for congress in Peru we would have 5 or 6 people every month who would get elected and then quit immediately. They had no interest in congress at all. All they wanted was the gold. Moving the reward to the end of the term would help ensure those that run for congress are doing it because they actually care, it might even put off a few PTO-ers too.

3) Give congress the vote to change the system of government.

Why? Well it is eRepublik but in RL republicanism and democracy take many different forms.

I've thought about 3 different government systems which give different powers to the president, the congress and the nation as a whole:

A Republic That's what we have at the moment. Congress and the president suggest laws which are debated and voted for by the congress.

A Democracy That's filtering power down to the nation. Congress and the president still suggest the laws but it is the nation as a whole that vote on them. (Apart from defence.) Each vote a citizen makes gets an xp point so it would be good for getting your population up to higher levels quicker, but should come at a time cost, each vote takes 48 hours instead of 24.

An Elected Monarchy/Dictatorship/Communism That is giving the president more power. The president suggests all laws and the congress votes on them, the president getting extra votes. Voting time is reduced to 12 hours. This would be perfect during war-time or for re-tooling the economy quickly.

A congress will be presented with the choice of continuing with the current system when a new president is elected, or if there is an impeachment/coup d'état. They can vote on changing the system at any time inbetween as well.

This would give a greater variety to government here in eRep.

* While most of my ideas have probably been thought of at some point somewhere, this one here is definitely not my idea. I'll try and track down the person who suggested it and add it in at a later date.
