Let's Be Different
Rangeley
There are many countries out there. Many have had events in their history where they were exploited, and taken advantage of. Some have a history of being invaded. Some have a history of occupation. Some have seen takeovers, some have seen their treasuries stolen. Austria has seen all of this.
And we aren't alone. It's happened elsewhere. Often, almost inevitably, the response was to seek revenge. Do unto others what they have done to us. Let them feel what we felt, then they will be sorry. Let's bring upon them retribution, let's do more than defend ourselves - let's destroy them.
But let's be different.
We have felt the sting of occupation. Let's not put others through this. We have dealt with the pain of takeovers. Noone should deal with one at our hands. When our friends in PEACE GC come to our aid, and come to our defense, we should give them our utmost thanks. We should not hesitate to return the favor, and come to their defense, in their time of need.
But when this group of friends gets the idea that they should start to do the very thing that was done to us, to others, let's be different. Let's tell them no. We were exploited, we should not be the exploiter. We should be standing up for the exploited, no matter their race, their ethnicity, or the region of the world they hail from. No matter their friends, no matter their enemies.
Let's not just be different, let's be better. Let's do what is right. We know power is tempting. It's easy to speak of fairness and equality when you are in a position of weakness. But when you have strength and power, this is truly when you are weakest of all to temptation. The temptation to use this power to further yourself, at the expense of others.
Then there is the temptation to fall in line. Do as your friends do. Give in to peer pressure. Who knows, you might even get something out of it. But our dignity should not be sold for any amount of gold, hospitals, or defense systems. It should not be sold for any amount of pats on the back, or high fives. It should not be sold.
Let's be Austria, the little country that was taken advantage of, and grew up into something better. Let's take a good look at what is wrong with the world, and try to fix it - not just accept it. Let's be different.

Wise Words from a Wise president!
Nice article just one question:
"When our friends in PEACE GC come to our aid, and come to our defense"..
Tell me exactly, who did all that occupation and those takeovers on Austrian soil?
The fact is, as you said, it's easy to speak of fairness when you are in a position of weakness. I remember hundreds of pages of Hungarian ( to take an example ) anti-TO position during the pre-boom period. Next elections, the world was flooded with TO attempts..
The thing is, once you have the power, you are expected to use it.
For a superpower ( in terms of military/economic might ), hiding behind it's borders is something that never happens, no matter the rhetoric.
I don't see Austria as a powerful country in eRepublik. But who knows, 10k+ users more tomorrow and you will be given the choice: Play the game ( that is imperialistic actions ) or crumble under your own weight. This is because war is the most lucrative business in eRepublik.
John the Brave:
War has changed. It's no longer about nations, ideologies, or ethnicity. It's an endless series of proxy battles fought by mercenaries and machines. War - and its consumption of life - has become a well-oiled machine. ID-tagged soldiers carry ID-tagged weapons, use ID-tagged gear. Nanomachines inside their bodies enhance and regulate their abilities. Genetic control. Information control. Emotion control. Battlefiled control. Everything is monitored and kept under control. The age of deterrence has become the age of control...All in the name of averting catastrophe from weapons of mass destruction. And he who controls the battlefield...controls history.
War has changed.
When the battlefield is under total control...War becomes routine.
Tl;dr: don't invade but let's help defend.
I'm fairly new to this game and I don't really know much of the politics flying around, but I have to admit that I really like what Rangeley is saying. A superpower doesn't have to be imperialistic; it can be a benefactor. It can support movements to return regions to their original owner, and to oppose PTOs and the like. On one hand, it may not have the access to resources that a more imperialistic superpower might have, but by being the good guy in the world it will engender support among other nations, allowing it to maintain its superpower status rather than creating enemies.
Doing the right thing may not be the easiest or most profitable thing, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't do it.
nice perspective! i like your Idea....
VOTEd.
War of machines? You accuse someone of using bots instead of clicking "fight" on his own? 🙂
John_the_Brave, not all wars are unjustified. I don't doubt that superpowers (which I certainly consider PEACE GC to be collectively, not Austria alone) are expected to beat up on the little guy. My point is that we should be better than this.
There will always be someone, somewhere, who is launching an invasion, trying to occupy, or trying to take over. We should be the people standing in their way; we shouldn't be these people.
bad perspective! i don't like your Idea....
not voted!!!!!
PPL should be better in real life there we must fight 😉 cause we can 😃
@Rangeley:
Recently, there was a huge debate in Romania about doing nothing, and slowly collapsing due to boredom, or starting a kamikaze war on Hungary..Guess what the public opinion ( or at least the more vocal ones ) say..
My point is that it's too easy to speak about this once you are little, the change of perspective power brings is mind blowing.
Today eRomania and eHungary can define themselves without the concept of war.And there's a very limited list of countries with the guts to put them on the defensive.. namely them two.
Once you are small you are only given the chance to defend and proclaim fairness. This is the right thing to do.
Once you are big you may only choose between greatness or re-becoming weak. Easy choice for most.
As a final point, both concepts ( peace vs war ) have their merit.
@Reets:
There is no such thing as a peaceful superpower in this game.
Quite a real-life simulator, eh? 😛
The attitude that using your power to do the very things you once fought against, somehow makes you great, is something I disagree with. I'm not disputing with you the idea that it is a commonly held view - if it were, what I'm talking about wouldn't be different, now would it? 😉
Reets wasn't talking about a nation simply never using its strength, but instead, using it's strength for the right, justified causes. That's not pacificism, or imperialism.
It's just a game. We don't massacre people, and don't frighten or terrorize them, we just hit the wall. I think it's a very humane war. 🙂 It's a game, so we have to want to win, else the game will boring. Can you imagine a football match, where the teams don't want to win, so they let the ball on the center of the playing field, and just chatting together for ninety minutes? 😃
So be good in real life and go fight in erep!
I know.
I am talking about transforming your words into actions -> This won't happen.
Not just here, in this pitiful game, where no wars means a crashing economy and boredom leading to game over.Bud sadly, in RL as well.
I am fine with a fair attitude towards everyone.I don't promote war as such ( and indeed I was/am quite definite against such practices as TO's and conquest war based on RL hate, etc. )
But guys like you and me don't influence the world's politics.
It is technically possible for a peaceful great power to exist. But you will never see such a thing.
The only sure way to have no impact is not trying.
This all depends on what you justify as "righteous". Depending on where you're from, how you're raised, and how you think, any invasion can be "justified" for various reasons. A citizen of Serbia can *rightfully* justify an invasion of Croatia based on years of being brought up to hate people (or perhaps, hate is the wrong word but extreme prejudice against past aggressions), just as Hungary and Romania had a long standing feud, etc.
This is all quite subjective. You can "justify" it from one angle just as I can *justify* it from another. It's our own choice, really.
@Rangeley
You got me there. Well, I wish you luck, though I am very pessimistic about any attempt to bring peace to the e-World ( and the real world as well 🙁 )
P.S.
Just by being part of PEACE GC, or EDEN, you indirectly approve of acts of e-'terrorism' ( past or present ).
@Dishmcds: It does ultimately come down to choice. Someone could use ethnic hatred and prejudice as their reason (or justification) for war, but is this the sort of nation, or sort of person, you want to be? I do not consider ethnic hatred a valid, rational justification.
Rangeley, I actually love you.
Is there a rational justification for going to war?
Like, does some oil make up for a human life?
Like the mob say goes: 'Nothing personal, just business.'. Disgusting..
Humanitarian intervention… Sacrifice a few lives to save many.
Of course, this doesn't often happen in the real world. because there's no money in doing the right thing.
As somebody said, wise words indeed.
Voted and subbed
Ahm, just wanting to correct one of my comments( it's too late now to erase it ):
"Today eRomania and eHungary can'T define themselves without the concept of war..etc."
Rangeley this is a great article no matter what anyone else says. While I don't believe a war in real life is ever justified, in erepublik I agree wars of defense are justified since no one dies. I hope maybe I can visit a peaceful Utopian eAustria soon and see that the country has followed the example you show.
@Pind0L - You are an idiot. Nothing more to say.
Wise words indeed. Tough to actually stay on the same path. eIndia is neutral, and know how challenging it can be, and how even more so, it will be in the coming days.
Imo, the objective of the game, - winning it isn't defined by territorial expansion only. War is an integral part of the game, and it will be so. One can't justify it or say one is a good or bad fight. Its just a part of the mechanics of establishing one's position in the eWorld. My point is just that there are other ways of doing so. Building up a strong nation, a 'peaceful super-power', as referred to, however difficult or seemingly impossible the challenge, imo is far more worthwhile. I guess my beliefs will be tested when we build up eIndia to have the kind of voice its capable of having.
Nonetheless, great perspective. Reminds me of RL Japan, who abolished nuclear weapons, having been the only nation to have faced the devastating effects of such.
Also good debate by John_the_brave.
can we still invade slovakia?
^ Wow lmao
Wise Words from a Wise president!
You rock!! But i still want revenge for what they did you Canada!
Rangeley, the issue is while *you* cannot justify those things based on those reasons, I'd bet my paycheck any day of the week if they committed some of the atrocities to you or your family that they did to those people, you'd feel the same way they did. It's something similar to "you weren't there man" syndrome.
This was a good article, there's no doubt about the fact that an independent thinker is certainly a good thing, however, things are not "black and white", things are not "justified or unjustified", and things are not "simple".
It's just not that easy to sit there and classify this or that as "good or bad". Especially when you're trying to speak for the good of the many, and not just the few.
I don't think we are on the same page here. I'm not saying I don't understand why people could be driven by ethnic hatred. I can see that, and I certainly understand it. I'm not saying I don't understand how people could want revenge. I certainly can.
But the real life atrocities you speak of, or the in game wrongs committed to Austria, are wrong not because of who they happened to. They would be wrong no matter who they happened to.
We can continue the cycle of hatred, and try and do what was done to us, to them. But I want to be better than this. We can recognize that the actions themselves were wrong, and not seek to repeat them; not seek to be hypocrites.
WAR and PPL never change 😃
