“With great power comes great responsibility.”

This is a universal truth. Its’ an apt reflection of the times that it takes a FILM on a comic-book hero to make it more widely accepted, over-quoted, and even trivialized! Even though it corresponds to every aspect of human life, I, speak in the context of eRepublik here.

Great power: the power to act, decide, determine/influence the fate of others and oneself, the so-called ‘bestowed authority’ to be a driving force &/or a catalyst of change.

Great responsibility: the duty, out of volition, to serve, be considerate, put the interests of others before self, be a force of positive change, based on genuine concern for people.

There is however a basic flaw in this idea. The statement isn't false, but that our interpretation is essentially biased.

For us RESPONSIBILITY is always someone Else's headache.

The dilemma arises from history itself and in its present making. All those bestowed with positions of power, inherently think of that as a responsibility earned, not an opportunity given. Hence the charge of leading is considered to have come about as a matter of natural progression. “I AM capable, and THAT is why I have the power. Even if I am Elected, I ‘deserved’ it!” The outcome is simple. We abuse the power. Even in our efforts, we are guided by self-centered motives. The fact that we have been bestowed this by those that trust as, as an opportunity to prove our worth is something a rare breed amongst us realize and act based on. (I am fortunate to have met such a breed of people in my real/eRepublik life.)

This however, is not the fault of the leaders alone. It is to a large extent due to the you’s and me’s, and our inability to realize our own corruption of the spirit. We tend to put Power before People, Position before Responsibility, and Titles before Duty.

We tend to think, that once a person has been GIVEN power, position, a title, our job is done! We need not take any more responsibility other than bothering our ‘little powerless lives’, & having the privilege to judge, criticize, and malign. What can I say or do, I am but a mere mortal. The ‘Gods’ among people, the Congress, the Presidents, the Business Owners, are the ones who are answerable, and we’ll just complain when things don't go our way. We'll boost our ego, pulling them down, as ‘the rebel’, the ‘hero’, the 'giant-killer'. I will judge, I will speak of how with ‘great power comes great responsibility’ and how those ‘bestowed power’ are inherently susceptible to the arrogance and the vagaries of ‘authority’.

Do we ever ask what great power we hold as a people, and as individuals?

How much am I doing?
How are my actions ensuring our fellow citizen’s welfare and our nation’s progress? Am I one who takes initiatives, possesses the strength of spirit not to succumb to arrogance myself? Am I one, who wholeheartedly supports our elected representatives, not by being a yes-man, but through our actions that will make their jobs that much easier? Do we first acknowledge the efforts that the leaders make, instead of passing blind and irresponsible judgment? I, the Citizen in eRepublik, and in Real Life, I forget, that as much as the other person, I myself have to respond to the call: “With great power comes great responsibility.”

I HAVE great power, great potential, and definitely, without a boot shoved up my behind, a great responsibility!

Again there are those amongst us who are but that rare breed, who act more than they say, and I for sure am not one of them. I think too much, act little, say a word more than is needed. And am in no ‘position’ to judge another. All I make is an attempt at conveying my abstractions in words, through the under-appreciated form, the eRepublik media.

The very ground of being a Citizen of eRepublik, is to showcase the power within us to be the agents of change within our given community, by making each of our actions, responsible, respect-worthy and based on the concept of taking charge of our country’s progress! In that way, I wholeheartedly believe, eRepublik not only provides us a platform for having great fun, but helps us understand aspects of our life, our own personality, in more ways than we realize.

All I wish to proclaim is my belief in the power of the people and their judgment. If I have elected a fellow Citizen to office, let me trust my own judgment, be the one to say, ‘mate, I will support you in any way I can’ (in any language or sentence composition). Let me be the one to say, ‘hey, I don’t agree with your proposal, but let me understand your points better’, before sounding the alarm of ‘arrogance’ and ‘vanity’!

Let me be the one, who whether I am country president or not, will take charge of the country with the same of not more sense of responsibility.

And to take responsibility, in the true sense, we do not need to be bitten by a spider, but rather than by our conscience. I hope my publication stirs the ‘spider sense’ in you, and we can build great communities based on trust and respect.

Jackbid: "You know why so many players lose interest and leave eRepublik early? Coz they have not understood why they are doing what we do everyday in this game. Coz they did not understand that working together with the community for a common goal is the main objective of this game.
Your article hit the nail right on the freaking head."
