Towards the end of World War II the staff of SS officer Hans Kammler made a significant breakthrough in anti-gravity. From a secret base built in the Antarctic, the first Nazi spaceships were launched in late ‘45 to found the military base Schwarze Sonne (Black Sun) on the dark side of the Moon. During 70 years of utter secrecy, the Nazis construct a gigantic space fortress with a massive armada of flying saucers.

When American model/astronaut James Washington (Christopher Kirby) puts down his Lunar Lander a bit too close to the secret Nazi base, the Moon Führer (Udo Kier) decides the glorious moment of retaking the Earth has arrived sooner than expected. Washington claims the mission is just a publicity stunt for the President of the United States (Stephanie Paul), but what else could the man be but a scout for the imminent attack by Earth forces? The Fourth Reich must act by starting a preventive war!

Now it’s 2018, the Nazi invasion is on its way and the world is goose-stepping towards its doom.

Two Nazi officers, ruthless Klaus Adler (Götz Otto) and idealistic Renate Richter (Julia Dietze), travel to Earth to prepare the invasion. In the end when the Moon Nazi UFO armada darkens the skies, ready to strike at the unprepared Earth, every man, woman and nation alike, must re-evaluate their priorities.

About the Film

Iron Sky is a dark science fiction comedy directed by Timo Vuorensola and will feature musical score composed by Laibach. The film is produced by Blind Spot Pictures and Energia Productions in Finland, and co-produced by 27 Films in Germany and New Holland Pictures in Australia. Principal photography took place in Germany in November-December 2010 and in Australia in January-February 2011.

Iron Sky premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival in February and opened in theaters in April 2012 with Finland opening on 4th of April and Germany on the 5th of April. Other countries will follow soon after. Croatia opening was on 19th of April, and USA opening is planned for June.

The primary language of the film is English. German is used as well.

Julia Dietze has won sympathy of the public in her character role of English teacher and Earth specialist, together with entertaining Christopher Kirby in the role of astronaut/activist/hero. Both of them got their chances to explore changing the sides, more or less willingly, to absurdity. Of course, there is also a love story between them and as a couple who save the Earth and the most of the Moon from Moon Nazis they will deserve at least a strong applause and possible global affirmation as actors. On the dark side of the Iron Sky, the film is further strengthened by traditionally solid Udo Kier in the role of Moon Führer, convincing and visually impressive Götz Otto in the role of ambitious and ruthless self-proclaimed Führer heir Klaus Adler. On the lighter side, there are Stephanie Paul in the role of the President of the United States, who absorbed stance, gestures and manners of the world leader figure very successfully, spiced up with a certain dose of humor and satire. Peta Sergeant in the role of ambitious, capable and hardworking campaign manager for the President managed it well and stepped readily onto the defense fleet commander bridge to help saving the mother Earth from Nazi invasion fleet, additionally motivated by personal revenge of an abandoned woman. She managed to capture the image of modern working woman balancing between her career role and private life.

World premiere was held in Berlin on 11 February 2012. They have already conquered Finland, Norway (4.4.), Germany, Switzerland, Austria (5.4.), Iceland (13.4.) and Sweden (18.4.) Today (19.4.) invasion on Denmark and Croatia (Zagreb) will commence. Then follow Poland (27.4.), Slovenia, Serbia and Australia (10.5.). UK is also scheduled for May 2012.

The Review

Iron Sky movie has its roots in Star Trek and its fan community, but it had grown out of it and its parody to a more serious, although not too serious, satirical SF movie with elements of (tragi)comedy. It has also influences in other genres, combining elements from comic book movie templates such as Sin City, atmosphere elements from film noir settled on the Dark Side of the Moon in Dieselpunk style, with a mirror vision of modern, easy going and popularity oriented consumer society, spiced up with satirical and cynical, politically incorrect comments on global politics and international relations.

Thematically Iron Sky reminds of Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds and Mel Brooks' The Producers, and it even references Charlie Chaplin's The Great Dictator. However, the scenes and dialogues are not so brutal as in Tarantino's movie, the mockery is a bit more subtle than in Brooks' movie, and it's not entirely directed to the Nazi side alone, but towards our society as well. Iron Sky shows the power of media, speech and message, but also how they can be misused for different purposes (like Renate's message in the White House or The Great Dictator movie itself). Nowadays still it involves certain dose of courage and a dose of lucidity or craziness to make a movie with such a sensitive topic, as Nazism still represents. And it also takes a dose of sapience not to cross the line of social acceptability or bad taste. For sure, all those directors, including Timo Vuorensola had it, and comparing Vuorensola to Tarantino, Brooks and Chaplin can be only a compliment for Vuorensola. Hopefully, with years, he could become a director as good as one of them.

Merging Nazis with space originates from Star Trek series in 1968 (Patterns of Force episode), although there is no other movie setting them on the Moon. Still, this idea is widely spread in popular myths involving conspiracy theories. However, there is certain historic background in it (Hitler's obsession with super-weapon technologies, German Nazi rocket V1 and V2 program, purported project Die Glocke and other projects). Even some cooperation between US Government and Nazi-Germany scientists is historical (Paperclip project, Wernher von Braun and NASA moon landing program). And there where history ends in mysteries, conspiracy theories emerge. On the verge of science the science fiction begins. Just as the movie Iron Sky.

Iron Sky core team of concept creator, director and producer has started with a series of short star trek parody movies under the common name Star Wreck as a enthusiastic team of young people from Finland. Although amateurs, they have shown great enthusiasm and dedication to the project, and along the way they have learned about film-making with each short movie they made, sometimes also on their own mistakes. It culminated with a Star Wreck: In the Pirkinning - which has been made, so to say, by the community for the community, and is freely available online under common creative license. It was downloaded in more than 3 million copies and encouraged by the market demand, recently they made Star Wreck: In the Pirkinning - Imperial Edition, with some post-processing redone and it is available on DVDs. Although it wasn't meant to be a commercial project, it started bringing some profits, which helped to raise some money for Iron Sky. It is estimated that the Star Wreck: In the Perkining - Imperial Edition costs were around 15.000 Eur, and its incomes are estimated to more than 300.000 Eur and still counting.

Iron Sky idea is provocative and intriguing, the script and dialogues are acceptable and funny, cast is respectable, although disappointing for those who have expected Hollywood stars crew, special effects are professional, Laibach music in the movie is great, covering the most of the movie, emphasizing the high-points strongly, and blending in subtly when needed. Production, financing and marketing are creative, and fan base and community are stable. Distribution is wide and all the major markets are covered. So far, acceptance by the audience is positive and the movie could become a huge success, even when compared to Hollywood production. It is interesting to note that Iron Sky trailer has more than 5 million views on youtube, which makes it more popular than some Hollywood hits trailers.

The only drawback noticed by the reviewers is that the movie is not funny enough for a comedy, but that might be more the result of missed expectations by the film critics. The rest is more than fine. Although the director himself has admitted his inadequate expertise in English, as well as the producer's. As the script was written by both of them, there could be some weak-points in the dialogues, so some extra help, perhaps by native speaker stand up comedians, might have been beneficial. Although, considering sensitive topic and traditional Finnish restraint, it could be accepted without disappointment. The point is not so much in humor, but in the message to the young people and whole society. It needed certain dose of courage and persistence, as well as lucidity to make this movie. And they succeeded. The audience has recognized that. Moreover, the movie has been created for the audience. And it brings some refreshment when compared to Hollywood blockbusters, which is encouraging for the independent film production, especially for Europe, and the youth.

As the leading character Renate says in the movie: The world is sick, and we are the doctors. And this time I they don't offer Nazism as the answer to the current difficult situation, but optimism, hope and laughter as remedies. And for those who currently rule the world is to take a minute for a thought on where they are leading us exactly to. Otherwise, the end could really become apocalyptic. Unless they run away and hide somewhere far away. On the dark side of the Moon, for instance. 😉

Interesting facts about Iron Sky

Udo Kier, who is playing Mondführer Wolfgang Kortzfleisch in Iron Sky, is famous for acting in many horror movies, playing Dracula in Blood for Dracula (also known as Andy Warhol's Dracula), he also played in major movie hits like Barb Wire, Armageddon, Johnny Mnemonic.

Götz Otto, who is playing Moon Nazi officer Adler, also played minor roles of bad guys in James Bond film Tomorrow Never Dies, in Steven Spielberg's film Schindler's List and in the film Downfall[1].

Soundtrack for the Iron Sky has been made by controversial Slovenian alternative industrial/neoclassic band Laibach. Its music and its public image are perfect match for Iron Sky. Laibach's music and performance style have significantly influenced on world famous Rammstain band.

Timo Vuorensola, the director of Iron Sky is for many years a big fan of Laibach group himself. Vuorensola is also a lead singer and a co-founder of alternative Finnish dark industrial band Älymystö.

The Mondnaziwunderwaffemutterraumschiff (Moon Nazi wonder weapon mother-spaceship) is called Götterdämmerung (Twilight of the Gods), named after the last in Richard Wagner's cycle of four operas titled Der Ring des Nibelungen (The Ring of the Nibelung).

The world premiere of Iron Sky was in Berlin, on Berlinale film festival on 11th of February 2012. The actress who plays the character of the President of the USA in the movie looks a lot like Sarah Palin, whose birthday is also on 11th of February. Happy birthday, Sarah! 😉

Nacistička tajna baza na Antarktiku (1945.) inspirirana teorijama urote.

Pred kraj 2. svjetskog rata osoblje časnika SS-a Hansa Kammlere ostvarilo je značajni proboj u istraživanju antigravitacije.

Iz tajne baze sagrađene na Antarktiku prvi nacistički svemirski brodovi lansirani su pred kraj 1945. kako bi osnovali vojnu bazu Schwarze Sonne (Crno Sunce) na tamnoj strani Mjeseca. Tijekom 70 godina potpune tajnosti nacisti su izgradili divovski svemirski brod tvrđavu s ogromnom vojskom letećih tanjura.

Kada američki astronaut i muški model James Washington (Christopher Kirby) sleti svojim mjesečevim vozilom malčice preblizu tajnoj nacističkoj vojnoj bazi, Mjesečev Führer (Udo Kier) odluči svoj veličanstveni trenutak ponovnog preuzimanja Zemlje pomaknuti ranije nego što je očekivao. Washington pod prijetnjom oružja tvrdi da je cijela misija spuštanja na Mjesec samo politički predizborni trik predsjednice SADa (Stephanie Paul), no što drugo predstavlja Zemljanin nego izvidnicu za neizbježan napad snaga sa Zemlje? Četvrti Reich mora djelovati i započeti preventivni rat!

Sad je 2018. godina, nacistička invazija je u tijeku, a svijet srlja kao guska u maglu prema svojoj propasti.

Dva nacistička časnika, bezobzirni Klaus Adler (Götz Otto) i idealistička Renate Richter (Julia Dietze), putuju na zemlju pripremiti invaziju. Konačno, kad Mjesečeva nacistička vojska NLOa zamrači nebo, spremna udariti na nepripremljenu Zemlju, svaki muškarac i žena i svaka nacija mora preispitati svoje prioritete.

O filmu

Željezno nebo crnohumorna je znanstveno fantastična komedija redatelja Tima Vuorensole, a filmsku glazbu skladala je skupina Laibach. Film je nastao u produkciji Blind Spot Pictures i Energia Productions iz Finske, a u koprodukciji 27 Films iz Njemačke i New Holland Pictures iz Australije. Prvotno snimanje se odvijalo u Njemačkoj u studenom i prosincu 2010. te u Australiji u siječnju i veljači 2011.

Željezno nebo (eng. Iron Sky, fin. Rautataivas) premijerno je izveden u Berlinu na međunarodnom filmskom festivalu Berlinale 11. veljače 2012. godine, a stigao je u kina u travnju. Hrvatska je, uz Finsku, Njemačku i skandinavske zemlje, među prvima državama u kojima se film počeo prikazivati. Premijera u Zagrebu održana je 16. travnja, a film se 19. travnja počeo prikazivati u kinima u Zagrebu, Splitu i Osijeku. U SADu se film očekuje u lipnju 2012.

Glavni jezik filma je engleski, a u filmu je prilično zastupljen i njemački.

Julia Dietze osvojila je simpatije publike u svojoj karakternoj ulozi profesorice engleskog jezika i zemljologinje, skupa sa zabavnim Christopherom Kirbyjem u ulozi astronauta, odnosno aktivista i (anti)junaka. Njih oboje imaju priliku istražiti uživljavanje u zamjenu uloga na suprotstavljenim stranama, manje ili više dobrovoljno, sve do apsurda. Naravno, tu je i ljubavna priča između njih dvoje kao para koji će spasiti Zemlju i veći dio Mjeseca od nacista s Mjeseca pa zaslužuju barem srdačni pljesak i moguću svjetsku afirmaciju kao glumci. Sa tamne strane Željeznog neba film je dodatno osnažen tradicionalno solidnim Udom Kierom u ulozi Vođe Mjeseca, uvjerljivim i vizualno impresivnim Ottom Götzom u ulozi ambicioznog i bezobzirnog samoproglašenog nasljednika Führera, Klausa Adlera. S vedrije strane tu su Stephanie Paul u ulozi Predsjednice Sjedinjenih američkih država, koja je vrlo uspješno upila stav, geste i način ponašanja figure svjetskog leadera, s određenom dozom začina humorom i satirom. Peta Sergeant u ulozi ambiciozne, sposobne i vrijedne managerice predsjedničke kampanje uspješno je riješila postavljeni zadatak i spremno stupila na komandni most zapovjednice obrambene flote kako bi pomogla spasiti majčicu Zemlju od invazije nacističke flote, ujedno i dodatno motivirana osobnom osvetom ostavljene žene. Uspješno je poprimila lik moderne žene koja balansira između svoje karijere i privatnog života.

Svijet se ponovno suočio s time 11. veljače 2012. u Berlinu. Već su osvojili Finsku, Norvešku (4.4.), Njemačku, Švicarsku, Austriju (5.4.), Island (13.4.) i Švedsku (18.4.). Osvrt na film

Film Željezno nebo ima svoje korijene u Zvjezdanim stazama i zajednici njihovih zaljubljenika, no prerastao ju je, kao i parodije izvedene iz njih, i postao ozbiljniji, iako ne preozbiljan, satirični znanstveno fantastični film s elementima (tragi)komedije. Ima utjecaje i u drugim žanrovima, kombinirajući elemente iz filmova prema stripovskim predlošcima poput Grada grijeha, elementima ugođaja iz noir filmova smještenim na tamnu stranu Mjeseca u stilu Dieselpunka, sa zrcalnom slikom modernog, lakomislenog potrošačkog društva usmjerenog prema brzoj popularnosti, začinjeno satiričnim i ciničnim politički nekorektnim komentarima na svjetsku politiku i međunarodne odnose.

Tematski, Željezno nebo podsjeća na Tarantinove Nemilosrdne gadove i Producente Mela Brooksa, a i referencira Velikog diktatora Charlieja Chaplina. Ipak, scene i dijalozi nisu tako brutalni kao u Tarantinovom filmu, ismijavanje nacizma (i neonacizma) je suptilnije nego u Brooksovom film, a satirična oštrica nije usmjerena samo prema nacistima, već i prema našem društvu također. Željezno nebo pokazuje moć medija, govora i poruke, no isto tako i kako je to lako zloupotrijebiti u različite političke svrhe (poput Renatine poruke u Bijeloj kući ili sam film Veliki diktator). Još i danas je potrebna doza hrabrosti i lucidnosti ili ludosti da bi se snimio film s tako osjetljivom tematikom kakvu nacizam i teorije zavjere predstavljaju. A također treba doza mudrosti kako se ne bi prešla crta društvene prihvatljivosti ili lošeg ukusa. Zasigurno svi spomenuti redatelji imali su ponešto od svega toga, a usporedba Vuorensole s njima može redatelju filma Željezno nebo biti jedino kompliment. Uz nadu da će s godinama postati dobar i značajan redatelj poput nekog od njih.

Smještavanje tematike nacista u svemir potječe iz epizode Zvjezdanih staza Uzorci sile (Patterns of Force) iz 1968. Iako do sad nije bilo filmova koji bi ih smjestili na Mjesec, ta je ideja rasprostranjena u popularnoj mitologiji pod utjecajem teorije zavjera. Ipak, postoji određena povijesna podloga i poveznice između njemačke tehnologije i spuštanja na Mjesec na kojoj počivaju ti mitovi (Hitlerova opsjednutost različitim tehnologijama super oružja, poput njemačkog nacističkog raketnog programa raketa V1 i V2, navodni tajni projekt Die Glocke, njemačka ekspedicija na Antarktik neposredno pred 2. svj. rat.). Čak i određen stupanj suradnje između Vlade SAD-a i bivših znanstvenika nacističke Njemačke je povijesna činjenica koja je doprinijela razvoju i nadmoći suvremene američke vojne i komercijalne tehnologije i prevlasti u utrci u naoružanju i svemirskom programu. (Paperclip project, Manhattan project, osnivanje svemirske agencije NASA). A tamo gdje povijest završava u misteriju, teorije zavjera se pojavljuju. Na rubu znanosti počinje znanstvena fantastika. Baš kao i film Željezno nebo.

Jezgra tima filma Željezno nebo (idejni začetnik, redatelj i producent) počela je sa serijom kratkih filmova parodija na Zvjezdane staze pod zajedničkim nazivom Star wreck (Zvjezdani brodolom ili Zvjezdane kamikaze u slobodnijem prijevodu) kao entuzijastični tim mladih ljudi iz Finske. Iako amateri, pokazali su velik entuzijazam i posvećenost projektu, a usput su učili o snimanju filma sa svakim kratkim filmom koji su snimili, ponekad i na vlastitim greškama. To je kulminiralo dugometražnim filmom Star Wreck: In the Pirkinning – koji je bio napravljen, takoreći od zajednice za zajednicu, i dostupan je besplatno pod zajedničkom kreativnom licencijom (eng. common creative license). Bio je skinut u više od 3 milijuna kopija, a ohrabreni zahtjevom tržišta, nedavno su izdali Star Wreck: In the Pirkinning - Imperial Edition, s ponovnim računalnim postprocesiranjem, a ta inačica dostupna je na DVD-u. Iako nije bio zamišljen kao komercijalni projekt, počeo je donositi dobit, što je dijelom pomoglo pri prikupljanju novca za snimanje filme Željezno nebo. Procjenjuje se da su troškovi Star Wreck: In the Perkining - Imperial Edition oko 15.000 Eur, a prihodi su premašili 300.000 Eura i i dalje se povećavaju sa svakim novoprodanim primjerkom.

Ideja Željeznog neba je provokativna i intrigantna, scenari i dijalozi su zadovoljavajući i duhoviti, glumačka postava je vrijedna poštovanja, iako razočaravajuća za one koji su očekivali ekipu holivudskih zvijezda, specijalni efekti su profesionalni, glazba Laibacha u filmu je sjajna i pokriva većinu filma, naglašavajući snažno dramaturške vrhunce, a neprimjetno se stapajući s filmom tamo gdje je potrebno. Produkcija, financiranje i marketing su kreativni, a baza obožavatelja i online zajednice je stabilna. Distribucija je široka i sva glavna tržišta su pokrivena. Do sad je prihvaćenost kod publike pozitivna i film bi mogao postići zapažen uspjeh, čak i u usporedbi s holivudskom produkcijom. Zanimljivo je primijetiti da je online trailer Željeznog neba prikupio više od 5 milijuna prikaza na youtubeu, što ga čini popularnijim od nekih video najave nekih holivudskih hitova.

Jedini nedostatak koji su recenzenti primijetili je taj da film nije dovoljno duhovit za komediju, no to isto tako može biti i rezultat promašenih očekivanja filmskih kritičara. Ostatak filma je u redu. Iako i redatelj sam priznaje svoju nedovoljnu stručnost vezanu uz engleski jezik, kao i onu producenta. Budući da scenarij potpisuju njih dvojica, lako je moguće da u scenariju postoje slabe točke u dijalozima, pa bi dodatna pomoć, moguće izvornih govornika, koji su istovremeno i stand-up komičari, bila dobrodošla. Iako, uzevši u obzir osjetljivost teme i tradicionalnu finsku suzdržanost, moguće je tu činjenicu prihvatiti i bez razočaranja. Poanta i nije toliko u forsiranju humora, nego u poruci mladima i cijelom društvu. Bili su potrebni određena doza hrabrosti i upornosti, kao i razigranosti za snimanje tog filma. I uspjeli su u tome. A publika je to prepoznala. Štoviše, film je i napravljen zbog publike. U svakom slučaju film donosi osvježenje u usporedbi s holivudskim filmskim uspješnicama, što je ohrabrujuće za nezavisnu filmsku produkciju, posebno onu europsku, kao i za mlade diljem Europe i svijeta.

Kao što glavni lik Renate kaže u filmu: Svijet je bolestan, a mi smo liječnici. I ovaj put ne nude nacizam kao odgovor na tešku situaciju, već optimizam, nadu i smijeh kao lijek. A oni koji trenutno vladaju svijetom neka se malo zamisle o tome kamo nas to točno vode zapravo. Inače, kraj bi zaista mogao postati apokaliptičan. Osim ako ne pobjegnu i sakriju se negdje daleko. Na tamnoj strani Mjeseca, na primjer.

Zanimljivosti vezane uz film Željezno nebo

Udo Kier, koji igra Vođu na Mjesecu Wolfganga Kortzfleischa, poznat je po glumi u mnogim horor filmovima, a igrao je i Grofa Drakulu u filmu Krv za Drakulu (eng. Blood for Dracula), također poznat i kao Drakula Andyja Warhola), također je igrao u velikim filmskim hitovima poput Barb Wire, Armageddon i Johnny Mnemonic.

Götz Otto, koji igra nacističkog časnika Adlera s Mjeseca, također je glumio negativce u manjim ulogama u filmu o Jamesu Bondu; Sutra nikada ne umire (James Bond - Tommorow Never Dies), zatim u filmu Schindlerova lista Stevena Spielberga kao i u filmu Konačni pad (Downfall).

Glazbu za film Željezno nebo potpisuje kontroverzni slovenski alternativni industrijski/neoklasični bend Laibach. Njihova glazba i imidž savršeno odgovaraju filmu Željezno nebo. Laibachova glazba i stil izvedbe značajno su utjecali i na svjetski poznatu grupu Rammstein.

Laibachova metoda je krajnje jednostavna, učinkovita i strašno podložna pogrešnoj interpretaciji. Ponajprije, oni upijaju manirizme neprijatelja, prihvaćajuči sve njihove zavodljive zamke i simbole državne moći, a onda sve to preuveličavaju do ruba parodije... Zatim preusmjeruju svoju pozornost na probleme visokog naboja — strah Zapada od imigranata iz Istočne Europe, igre moći u EU, analogije između zapadnjačke demokracije i totalitarizma.

Timo Vuorensola, redatelj Željeznog neba je i sam dugogodišnji ljubitelj grupe Laibach. Vuorensola je također glavni vokalist i suosnivač alternativnog finskog crnoindustrijskog benda Älymystö.

Matični svemirski brod kao čudesno oružje nacista s Mjeseca (njem. Mondnaziwunderwaffemutterraumschiff) nazvan je Götterdämmerung (Sumrak Bogova), prema posljednjoj u ciklusu 4 opere Richarda Wagnera pod zajedničkim nazivom Prsten Nibelunga (njem. Der Ring des Nibelungen).

Svjetska premijera Željeznog neba održana je 11. veljače 2012. u Berlinu, na svjetskom međunarodnom filmskom festivalu Berlinale. Glumica Stephanie Paul koja u filmu glumi lik Predsjednice SAD-a izgleda vrlo slično Sari Palin, čiji rođendan je također 11. veljače. Sretan rođendan, Sarah! 😉

Naravno, svi likovi koji se pojavljuju u filmu su izmišljeni. Bilo kakva sličnost sa stvarnim osobama, živima ili umrlima, je potpuno slučajna.
