Women in eRepublik.

I did a test today. I googled ’most influencial women’ and got a little over 750.000 results, lists with many names on it I had never even heard of. Sure, there were icons on it like Eleanor Roosevelt and Marie Curie, but to be honest - at number 3 and 4 on the first top 100, I was already lost. Then I googled ‘most influencial men’ and got almost 45.000.000 results. I found so many top tens and top 100’s, of more years, and in more areas than I could believe. And, actually, most names did ring a bell too.

Does this mean women have had and still have less influence in what’s happening in the world? I dare to say no. I believe it is because really influencial women were and are focused on achieving goals together with or for other people, while most men are focused on, well, plainly advertising for themselves. Am I that wrong in my assumption? Let’s take a look at eRepublik.

When Mr. Bell invited me to write an article on my experiences as a female citizen of eRep, it made me think if my experiences would be that different from the 99% male players in this game. I joined, discovered the main options, did my missions, learned a little about game mechanics, spent too much gold on the wrong stuff. So far, I’d say I could have been an ordinary guy.

Then I discovered the media. The forum. The IRC. I joined an MU and a political party, that I was drawn into as I accidently made a comment on the new to be developed logo. I felt I should contribute as I was skilled and experienced in RL. Though never with the intention of becoming party president, congress women or minister. Actually, at first I mostly liked being anonymous, without the responsibilities I carry in my RL job - in a world dominated by male ego’s.

But of course, I did get involved. I started thinking how we could make eNetherlands more fun to all players. How we could work together within eNL as well as with smartly chosen allies - in order to grow stronger as a nation. I was surprised and by times upset to see how debates could go. How important it seemed to make name, to know better, rather than helping out and working together on achieving goals. But then I realize😛 hey, eRep too is a world dominated by male ego’s. One improvement: as I am still hidden behind my keyboard, you are at least not talking to my blouse.

To answer Mr. Bell’s second question: yes, I think it would be great if more women would join the game. For real women (not the pretenders that just want to benefit from a pretty avatar) will bring real fun. Women attracted to strategy games are likely to be equally intelligent, equally educated and equally ambitious. So the game would only change for the better - still you would never even know who did it.

An interview with Roktaal, creator of eRep Advanced.
Interviewer: Markus Bell

How did you get involved or establish the whole erepublik advanced project?

In the beginning it was just a company managing script. At the time there was no updated company managing script and because I needed one, I started updating one that was outdated. At the time there was one general script called eRepPlus but when v2 came out developer stopped working on it so I expanded my company script. Thats when eRepublik Advanced is born.

Are there any features you would personally like but cannot yet add into erep adv?

There are many features I'd like to add but due to technical limitations of eRepublik they cannot be added.

Are there many other people out there you know of creating scripts like yours?

As far as I know there is no other script of this kind. There are some copies of my script but none of them are authorized.

Have you ever been approached by the erep admins to purchase your script so that it can be put into the game itself?

I was asking eRepublik admins about the legality of eRA and I was asked to provide the list of features and all I got is the response that the script doesn't violate any eRepublik law.

Tell me a bit about your eSelf, are you patriotic? Are you politically involved with your country?

I am patriotic and I love my country but I am not involved in any political activity.

The ePol awards!

Last term, Joep's government saw a lot of new faces. I thought this was a great idea and helped new players get a taste of the ePolitical world. I want to do my bit too and reward ePoliticians for their efforts in government with a simple vote competition. Introducing this project will encourage citizens of the eNetherlands to participate in the forums and try to get involved more in politics so that they too could be in for the chance to win this prestigous award!
