The easternmost point of departure on the Pony Express route was St. Joseph Missouri, and the westernmost point was Sacramento California. A series of riders were expected to reach way stations to change horses every ten to twenty miles, changing riders a couple times a day, ultimately reaching the end of the route in ten days.
