Laat ons voor de verandering allemaal eens eerlijk zijn. De Senaat is niet het probleem in dit land. Het is het foutief gebruik maken van de gegeven bevoegdheden, waar of onterecht toegekend, dat deze discussies over de Senaat aanzwengelt. Maar waar komen deze gevoelens vandaan?

Voor het grootste deel hebben onze Senatoren hun werk perfect gedaan. Er is maar één groot incident geweest, eerder dit jaar, en dat is opgelost. Helaas heeft die oplossing niet het effect gehad dat dit incident uit het publieke, of bij sommige mensen, persoonlijke geheugen is verdwenen. Ons afvragen of deze Senator in functie had moeten blijven lost ons probleem niet op, want dat is nu te laat. Auggustus, want hij is de Senator over wie we het hebben, vond het correct om aan te blijven. Het zij zo.

Desalniettemin denk ik dat vele van de, al dan niet terechte, beschuldigingen aan het adres van de Senaat hun wortels in dit geval van machtsmisbruik hebben. De meeste mensen zullen dit instituut nooit weer vertrouwen, nadat ze gezien hebben hoe één van zijn leden zijn bevoegdheden heeft misbruikt zonder daarvoor gestraft te worden.

Maar dat is iets uit het verleden, zou je zeggen. Ja, inderdaad. Helaas is deze Senator niets vergeten, en heeft hij niets geleerd. Vandaag heeft hij opnieuw een reactie van Pierre Delvaux verwijdert, alhoewel reacties van andere mensen minstens even irrelevant waren. Zolang deze Senator niet het gezonde verstand heeft om het verwijderen van reacties van Pierre over te laten aan zijn collega’s, zal de Senaat altijd worden aangevallen op basis van de persoonlijke fouten van één persoon.

Daarom roep ik Auggustus op om op te stappen. Niet vanwege grieven uit het verleden, niet vanwege fouten uit het nu, maar om de Senaat, een van onze staatsinstellingen, de vernedering te besparen zijn integriteit constant aangevallen te zien. Deze stap zal misschien te laat komen om de de al beschadigde reputatie van de Senaat te redden, maar het kan zeker geen kwaad. Treedt – af!

For a change, let us all be honest. It is not the Senate that is the problem in this country. It is the bad use of given powers, real or unjustly perceived, that rouses these discussions on the Senate. But where do these feelings come from?

For most of the time, all Senators have done their work perfectly. There has been only one major incident, earlier this year, and this was smoothed out. However, smoothing it out has not had the effect of removing it from the public or, in some case, personal mind of people. Questioning whether the Senator should have stayed in office will not solve this problem, as it is now too late. Auggustus, for he was this Senator, thought it right to stay in office. So be it.

However, I think many of the, true or alleged, allegations against the Senate stem from this incident of power abuse. Most people will never trust this institute again, after they have seen one of its members abuse his powers without being punished for it.

But that is something of the past, one would say. Yes, it is. However, this Senator has forgot nothing, and has learned nothing. Today, he has again removed a comment made by Pierre Delvaux, although comments made by other people were as irrelevant as his. As long as this Senator does not have the common sense to refrain from removing comments by Pierre, and leave it to his colleagues, the Senate will always be attacked on the basis of personal flaws exhibited by one person.

That is why I call on Auggustus to step down as a Senator. Not because of past grievances, not because of flaws in the present, but to save the Senate, one of our state institutions, the humiliation of constantly being attacked on its integrity. This step might come too late to help the already tarnished reputation of the Senate, but it will certainly not harm it any further. Step - down!
