A few months ago, I mentioned that I was playing with the idea of creating a new party. As time has gone by, I've waited for the right time, and to be honest I'm not sure that it has ever come. But today I couldn't pass up the opportunity to announce a new Irish party on this most Irish of days. So may I present to you, the people of Ireland, a brand new political party:

EIRE AONAIR

It was created at exactly 7:30 eRep time, on March 17, 2011 (Saint Patricks Day)

Now you may have a few questions, and I think I've anticipated some of them. I'll do my best to answer, but it is St. Patricks Day, so I'll make it brief.

Is this new party in anyway related to Eire Aontaithe?

Well, only in the similarity of names, and the possible coincidence of a few policy views. But right from the start, I want to make it clear that this is an entirely new party. Eire Aonair is not the successor of Eire Aontaithe.

I was a member of Eire Aontaithe, but there are 3 reasons I've chosen this name:

1. I think it has a nice ring
2. It's Irish so it reflects the place it represents
3. It translates roughly to "Single Ireland" - That's why the party will also be known as "The One Ireland Party".

Aren't there already enough political parties in Ireland?

I did ask myself that question, and I think the answer is yes. The population of Ireland is small, such there isn't room for that many parties. Realizing that, I don't care if this party has 100 members or if it has 6 (although hopefully no less than 6). This party is meant to promote new ideas, not overshadow different ones. And for a long time at least, I suspect this party may only serve to support larger ones.

So then what is this party all about?

The main principles of Eire Aonair are:

1. Community
2. Individual Responsibility
3. Fair Play/Respect
4. Principles Over Politics

I will write a detailed manifesto type document for the party, but in general the party stands strongly for these principles. Everything else is negotiable, but these are not.

Who is this party for?

This party is for anyone and everyone. The official policies of the party will be centre, libertarian in an eRepublican context. But to me, this doesn't exclude anyone.

One feature of this party will be a concept of independent thought and value. None of the members are expected to adhere to party lines as long as they publicly identify that they are speaking personally in a political context. We encourage members from all points of view who share our values, rather than the optional official party stands.

It's an independent party at heart.

An example: Eire Aonair supports the idea of communes and left-wing policy. Members with these beliefs and values will fit in. The reason that the party can still be called libertarian, is that the party may in some way support these communes, but it will never inflict mandatory communism on the nation. I for example, am not keen on joining a commune myself. The party also supports free enterprise by avoiding party companies for free market sales. The capitalist is at liberty to play their own game, and the communist is also at liberty. It's a quaint concept, but I hope it will serve the party well.

ONE IRELAND UNITED BY CHARACTER, MADE STRONGER BY THE DIVERSE VIEWS OF A PEOPLE.

Cheers,
