Each month, players come and players go
.
That is eRepublik. Some of the ones that leave, we see returning days, weeks or months later. Some of the ones that leave, we never see again. One such citizen was Malta_1990, or Matteo. He was an incredibly nice person: warm, hard working and one of the greatest citizens the eUK has ever had. He was a Country President in 2009, and still has the highest post count of anyone on our forums. He left for a short while over the Summer to go on holiday, but never returned to the game. We thought nothing of it, assuming he had finally escaped from the addictive clasp of this website.

We found out today from his brother that Matteo had passed away on the 4th November, aged just 20. The reason for his death is not known to us, but we are told he struggled with illness and disability throughout his life. We were unaware of this, and as Iain Keers wrote "I never realised he was ill or disabled. I think the fact that he never complained or moaned about it is a huge testament to his character". This is a perfect summary of just what made him who he is, and such an endearing and important part of our community.

His eRepublik citizen was named after the place that meant so much to him - the island of Malta. Behind Macedonia, it is perhaps the most campaigned-for country in eRepublik and it was a feature of much of his time here that he would quest for its introduction. I am sad it could never happen in his lifetime.

In light of this tragedy, I am dedicating myself towards the introduction of eMalta. I fondly remember him saving up piles of gold so that one day he could turn Malta into a world power. So I humbly request to the game administration that, in his honour, we establish eMalta. It is a small thing: trivial compared to the devastating news of his passing. With all my heart, I send best wishes to his family and friends in real life. But in this virtual world, it is the small things that affect us most - those that make us laugh, despair, and those that make us celebrate. As Matteo once wrote, “Life is not measured by the number of breaths that you take, but by the number of moments that take your breath away!”.
