[UNL] The UNL political system : a need of change !
Dear citizens of the United Netherlands,
Our political system is very particular : the United Netherlands are a "parliamentary democracy", and is not a republic, which is quite original for a game called eRepublik...
After the Congress Elections, the party which have won the most seats of congressmen is forming a coalition of parties to make a government.
The President, elected 10 days later, have no power in our system, although he is the one who is responsible for the country military operations (attacking regions, retreating, etc...).
Our political system have worked very well, but is now outdated.
There is too much opposition between our UNL political parties, and between our politicals leaders.
The last months have been difficult for our Union, and the reality of our country have change.
We are even now living a situation where the political party of the President is not in the government.
I would like to propose you a new political system.
A system which won't be a big surprise, as it is a republik political system...
What is best than a republik in eRepublik ?
How does it will work ?
The President will be elected each month, and will have to form his government. A government which won't be a coalition of political parties, but of experienced and enthusiastic people...
The President will have to present his government to the Congress, elected 10 days before, and which will have to vote the confidence toward this proposition of government made by the President.
What are the benefits of this system ?
- it's more democratic, no more tactical voting on Congress election day.
- it simplify the system and make it more efficient, especially with the role of the President.
- it will improve the debates in the Congress, which won't be bound anymore to the government.
- no more political struggles which can block our country, and impeach some experienced people to work for our nation.
- the Presidential government can be presented before the election, and citizens will be able to react on it. Moreover, we won't loose anymore 5 to 10 days per month to form a new government.
- ...
I really think that our political system need a change.
I really think that this change can be the rise of the Republik.

I agree with the system even if I disagree with some of the benefits.
tbh, nonsense... lots of republica exist without a president.
The US chooses their president, which has a lot of power.
Other republics work different.
I certainly would disagree with making one man a lot more powerful.

It won't change a lot, as the power won't be all in the hands of the President, but will be spread as now in the Government and the Congress.

It is not more democratic (because with 1 vote different you get a total different situation).
Tactical voting, will still be there for the congress.
You can get a totally blocked situation that you have a president having 45% behind him and "opposition" holding 55% of seats in congress and no vote of confidence neither impeachment will make it.
A change of congress will come in the middle of the current government.
Improvement of discussion in congress depends on who is chosen, not on what system you have.

I do not agree on most benefits of this republican proposal, but give it a chance. You never know maybe UNL politics will improve and that is needed.

Good plan, we should discuss and do some fine tuning but it could remove a lot of problems we are now facing.

This idea has been floating about for a while, interesting time to present it on the day of congressional elections.
I support this idea as it would stop a string of meaningless presidential elections we have seen over the last few months. Presidents would have to present a serious proposal to govern AND a goverment backing them into these elections, failure to meet their goals would make impeachment actually mean something.
2 things that I worry about is that this enables a president/goverment to take power that doesnt represent the actual election outcome of the congress AND we have seen that with the recent change in parties in goverment the change has NOT gone down well. I doubt a simple proposal as this will actually change the fractured party structure AND subsequent slander between the UNL political parties. Frankly, CURRENTLY, I can only see this change the goverment bid from a congress-seat aligned structure to an actual vote-number breakdown, something that will benefit SOME parties and not benefit others.
For the future, this system would indeed eliminate the 10 day negotiations period after each election AND allow the UNL to vote for a president and goverment with clear plans to act from the day of election and onward.

Step 1 would be to NOT put this up as a congress debate but open this up as a referendum to the people.
Dont mind me, but it is really funny that when the moment comes when BP is not in the government, they all cheer for this plan......

Principles are good, I also think that it will return simpler and quicker polls. But I am not sure that it will represent our citizens at best.

Flando : Actually, this plan came out the day when a government member told me that as President i was only invited in the defense channel, that i wasn't the head of army and that i wasn't part of the army staff, and that i can't ask for speaking english in this channel, which was made by AndreasIsaksson to talk with his Generals. I thought that there was a little problem somewhere... 🙂

Yeah, he just can retry our army of the field at any time, but of course, he is not IG our military leader.
Probably, there is a litle problem. And we are not able to change IG mechanics...
1- The Congres can impeach him at any time
2- Smart president know they must receive Congress agreement
If Congres Majority and President are not from the same side, they should negociate.

Formateur is something we always did, but it is empty. It is not official..
So, if the president asks himself, the PP of the winning party just starts making his government

The list of the government can be published already before the elections, and it won't be more extended than the 10 days used the last month. Moreover, there is less chance than the congress reject it because the President will be able to choose any people regardless theirs parties, so each party can be represented with his best men...
sounds good, but I'm afraid in practice it will create a closed elite class, and that new and less experienced players will not be involved as much as needed to keep them engaged with the game.
Wondering if this will fix it, since some people don't want to work together when offered a position. Will this be different when the president ask them. Probably it will in the first month, but what about later. But I think it will automatically improve tranparancy which I still favour a lot.
It will certainly be more democratic. Because the people get to decide who will lead the government and the government he/she has in mind.
I don't know if I agree on the 'more democratic' argument. People vote for one person and not the whole government. It is more democratic to let it be based on congress, since voting is done based on multiple persons. Maybe it is better vote for the best person for each ministry instead of letting one person decide.

The one will the most numbers of vote will be elected, and not the one which had more users awake at 8.00am a morning like we all are used to do... 😃
That is true, but I still don't really agree that a gov made by one person is really democratic also, so maybe it is an idea to vote for each position based on self-candidacy or that the president tries to get atleast two candidates and vote for one of those.
As newby here, i prefer a Monarchy too. It's important to have a head of state who has no powers at all, and only have a symbolic function in goverment. The fact that our political system is very particular here on erepublic, should not be an argument to change anything about our political system. Let's not even concider looking at other countries policital systems. We simply do it our own way!

It's a great plan, it has been around for a while, and it needs ALOT of work.
We dont have an ideal country in terms of citizens and vote distribution, we hence need to find out exactly what the different functions and goverment changes would mean before we talk of benefits to the country... i mean, has anyone bothered with proper statistical analysis and conclusion? I havent seen any reference to it yet...
Lets be fair here, we see plenty of references to a constitution that simply isnt in place yet and we have people wanting to push this through NOW?
FIRST, we wrap up the constitution which needs another week.
THEN, we start talking about this new form of goverment AND its potential implementation. We also have merger talks with the UK active AND a situation with Belgium and belgian affiliated parties clamoring for potential seperation from the union / seperate joining of the UK or forming of its own state.
I dislike the sudden pace this is being represented in and I dislike the tone this is being represented in, I smell foul play. This change of goverment type HAS to go through proper channels and stages for my support. That means MORE then just a topic in the congress forum.

You will have to form an "Ivanovist" party, like the old Carlists in RL Spain, haha...
So the government will be drawn from all five congress parties? On the face of it, I agree with this plan, I think having a government with the most knowledgable and experienced people is the best.
