1. Special Edition: An Interview with tsewell

eAmerican Hero - tsewell
by Wooky Jack

Some folks may wonder who is the baddest motherf****er is in eUSA, but a lot of the Old Fu-ks already know that tsewell is America’s hero on the battlefield. For those of us who have been wondering, can you tell us a bit about yourself? (How you found erepublik, your name, avatar, anything real life related.)

I've been involved with eRep for over six years now so a lot of the details about how I started out are pretty hazy now. I can tell you with certainty that I started playing because of an injury. I completely severed my achilles tendon helping my brother push a car ten feet. After the surgery to sew it back up, I was not allowed to put any weight on my ankle for a few months, and thus spent a LOT of time on my back. I seem to remember clicking through one of those pop-up adds one day while on the internet trying to avoid succumbing to death by boredom brought about by day-time TV. (You know the ones, "Play , It's FREE", plastered over a large breasted armor clad woman who has absolutely nothing to do with the game.) This was in the golden days of V1 and at that time I enjoyed the game tremendously.
My name is first initial, last name, and my avatar is the painting "Jupiter and Thetis" by Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres. I chose that image due the the striking physical resemblance between myself and the primary Greek/Roman god. If you could actually see me in the flesh, I’m sure you would totally agree.

Given the infinite number of complaints this game has, why do you still play?

Boy, that is really the question nowadays, isn't it? Well, for all the complaints about the game, one thing the admins did successfully, at least in my case anyways, is that there always seems to be just one more goal to achieve. Recently it was getting to Legend rank, and right now I have just two more EXP levels to get to level 400. OK, actually you have to get to 401 to get your rewards so I have three levels to go.
But to be totally forthcoming, I have to admit that the main reason I keep clicking is because I'm not willing to admit that I've wasted all this time, money, and effort to an unworthy cause. Not the most flattering admission, but how many of us are guilty of wearing blinders and denying unpleasant truths at some point in life?

What was the most memorable moment of playing erepublik?

All you current players have got to be absolutely sick to death of hearing us old-timers refer to the "good old days", but to answer this question, I am going to have to drag it out one more time. I have always been drawn to the war module first, and the economic module second. Anyways, there was a whole lot more complexity to the strategy of battles and wars back in V1. Our enemies would start their battles so that they ended at three or four in the morning our time since you could only fight a limited number of times each day. If your side had your fighters apply their damage early in the battle, that gave the opposing side time to come up with a response to your tactics. If the battle ended at that time in the morning, a certain percentage of the people would not be awake, and couldn't contribute. Of course, we strove to do the same thing to our opponents.
Successful fighting in those days was all about coordination. The country president had to start the battles at the right time. The military leadership needed to know how much damage could be applied to the wall. The quartermasters had to supply moving tickets and weapons to the troops. Orders had to be communicated in a timely manner. You could only fight in a battle if you were in the country where the battle was being fought (OK, I know that you could fight from a country with a MPP, don't get nit-picky). You couldn't move to a country you were at war with, necessitating a layover. If hearing the phrase "Move to Hello Kitty (Heilongjiang) via Singapore City" stirs good memories, you know what I mean. You could only work for a company that was actually in the country you were in, so leadership had to come up with a way for their troops to work during extended deployments. Combat was so much more complex and satisfying in those days.
My favorite memories are of waking up at 2:30 in the morning and getting on IRC with my fellow MI (Mobile Infantry) members and waiting out the last 15-30 minutes of a contested battle. The order to fight would usually not be given until the last minute or two and we would all frantically click trying to get our six fights in. Then you sat there watching the players scrolling by as the wall climbed or fell. When you won a battle, you really felt a part of a team, and when you lost, it could be devastating. (I still haven't forgiven the UK for Kamchatka in WW3 and it must be five years ago now)

You seem like an active enough fighter, why not join Politics to let some of that aggression out?

I really don't see the point in the political module, especially now with how dictatorship has changed things. I've always been someone who concentrated on analyzing the actual game mechanics and playing those to win, thus my attraction to the military and economic modules. It seems to me that the thing that makes the political module fun for most people is the metagame, and that doesn't appeal to me. I mean, seriously? Debating political principles as if they matter in an online browser game? Plus with my experience in the eUSMil leadership, I know that involvement with this type of thing can really eat up large chunks of your time.

Are there any particular players in erepublik you like? Why?

Most of the people I was really close with were from back in the days when I was very involved with the eUSMil. There are almost literally none of them left anymore besides me. Deificus, GoalieBSCS, Morrigan Alexandros, Bia Pandora, AutumnsDawn, Heather Fuchs, all gone. I guess that just goes to reinforce my irrational denial of the direction this game has gone.
That's not to say that there are no current players that I like. Gnilraps, Cyberwitch, JADiv, and Josh Frost have all been helpful and accommodating to me. I remember Colin Lantrip being extremely generous back in the day. I seem to remember Phoenix Quinn passing through my platoon back in the MI days. Greenday4537, NecromanMMO were officers when I commanded the MI. NSalv, Xanthar Zaiban, Martin Stettler, and Aleksandra the Great are international players that have all helped me answer questions regarding some of the questions I have had regarding the higher ranks.

What players do you dislike? >😃

About the only player I really have any negative feelings for is Pfeiffer. I was in the JCS during the Congress/JCS conflict and I remember trying to talk to him about finding middle ground, only to find out he was not being sincere in our conversations. Even IRL, I have a problem with puppeteer-types who play cutthroat behind the scenes.

Looking at your erepublik profile it seems you’ve never gone to get citizenship in any other country. How come?

Well, I don't know, I have never really even considered changing citizenship. I’ve always fought for the eUSA and even when individuals have pissed me off, I haven’t felt that abandoning the country was the answer.

What are your thoughts on the Dictatorship module Plato unleashed on us?

I don't really see the point in this rule since all you have to do to combat the possibility of a hostile dictator taking over is to have an "official dictatorship" (due to the the delays in starting the different stages of a coup). I was a little worried at first that some unscrupulous individual would take advantage of the situation but it seems that over time this hasn’t happened.
I don't really see why they instituted this feature, I mean how does it make money for the admins?

I won’t make you answer ten questions so lets just stick with eight questions and this ninth one will be for sh*ts and giggles. What will you choose?

Jude Conners, Henry Pfeiffer Arundel and Ajay (pizzathehut): you have to marry one, kill one and f**k one. GO!

Well, Jude has never bothered me one way or the other so I would have to choose him for marriage, since we would be able to ignore each other, just like me and my ex did for years. I've already talked about Pfeiffer above so he would be the one I would kill. Ajay is not someone I hate, cuz I find his futility to be amusing. But coitus? That seems unsettling (I know how much he creeped out Bia). How about polygamy? Jude and Ajay could both be wives and I could ignore them both.
