The Spectre of Democracy

It was Winston Churchill who said, "the best argument against democracy is a five-minute conversation with the average voter." Such a conclusion however is based on the assumption that the average voter is a fool, and that the biggest argument against democracy lies in the supposed ignorance of the masses.

I address you today, as both an eCanadian presidential candidate, and an eCanadian citizen, who has been here long enough to witness the evolution of this "country", or better said, the evolution of this community.

We have been given great tools; we work with a world where the democratic system of governance is a given, where nobody has to die to protect that right, and nobody has to worry that they will ever lose that rights. eRepublik, and the New World it hosts, is the type of utopian pipe dream John Lennon might have preached; it is the type of world where freedom is synonymous with reality.

We have been given these tools, this "New World", and the chance to explore, and use our creativity and determination to transform it into something better.

My hopes and presidential bid, are based on the premise that we, as eCanadians, possess exactly the type of tools needed to sculpt a masterpiece. What we lack, is an enabler, a spark, something which will allow us to unleash our potential, and allow us to transcend our existential drudgery into something more significant, into something worth trudging on for.

I see this eNation, as an opportunity to do great things, as an opportunity to explore and gain the experience of doing something we may never get the chance to do beyond the confines of this eWorld. I see this eNation, and this eWorld, as a canvass, and ourselves as the ultimate artists. I have thus made it my mission to help distribute the paintbrushes, the hammers, and the tools that are missing and preventing us from completing our work.

I do not believe that democracy is a failure, nor do I believe in the arguments that are rallied against it, for I deny that we are incapable of creating our own destiny.

I imagine a government where you don't have to wait weeks, months, years, to become President, or a Congressmen, or a Member of Cabinet, or in other words a position where your ideas start to matter; a position where your ideas can take shape, and where your vision has a real chance of becoming a reality.

I imagine a society where the people and the government are one, where dialogue is free, and political differences are set aside in favor of ideas.

I want to liberalize our society. I want to make sure, as CP, that I host open debates on almost a daily basis in the comments section of Presidential and government newspaper articles. I want a platform based on what the people desire, and what the people can come up with, and I see myself as the type of leader whose responsibility does not lie in becoming the creative overlord of the nation, but whose responsibility lies in becoming the creative enabler of the nation. A leader who encourages teamwork and dialogue, not elitism and control.

I envision a true leader as one who makes every effort to connect with voters, to ask for opinions, spark dialogue, and truly become a "people's President". I envision a true leader as one who considers the value in any idea or opinion, whether it comes from someone who joined this game one month ago or two year ago, whether it came from a lone voice or whether it was the collective voice of many. I envision a true leader as somebody who is passionate enough about innovation and community, to enable this nation to speak, and who takes the time to listen as well.

Most of all, I envision a leader who brings real change, to not only the direction of eCanada, but a real change to the system itself.

I aspire to be the leader who believes in ideas, not politics. Who believes in the ideals of a free and open society, not in the confines of secret war rooms. Who believes in reforming the way we function as a government and society, and the way we participate in this government as citizens. And I hope that on February 5th, you trust me be that leader.

It's time to paint our masterpiece.
