[The Guild] Profiles of Irish Parties

Day 1,887, 18:36 Published in Ireland Ireland by Stilpo

Greetings Ireland,

The following is the very first publication of The Guild of Irish Parties, or just “The Guild” for short. The Guild is an independent organization that I am creating to provide essential support and services to all Irish parties who wish to participate.

Such services may include but are not limited to:

(1) Party profiling & information services (e.g. the current article)
(2) Standardized party performance analysis (including both numbers-based and multi-dimensional survey-based approaches)
(3) A non-partisan forum for inter-party communication, coordination and conflict resolution.

The ultimate goal is to develop the Guild into a full-fledged member-based organization consisting of all (or most) Irish parties with an official charter and governing structure. Such a set-up could provide a great foundation for cooperation on things such as ATO efforts, immigration enforcement policy, and agreement on things such as fair practices in party politics.

For now, however, the Guild will simply remain an independent organization that offers opportunities for parties to participate in individual non-binding initiatives (such as the one below). A dedicated IRC channel (#TheGuild) has also been set up to facilitate communication between parties and further development of the Guild. Leaders from all parties and their representatives are welcome on the channel so long as they are respectful to their fellow guests.

As the title suggests, the following is a systematic review of Irish political parties. In addition to basic information, the party profiles below include factors that go significantly beyond what can be found in game-based profiles (e.g. functional-goals, foreign affairs ideology, internal governing practices, communications preferences, etc.). It is my hope that this information will help both young and experienced players better understand the practical differences between the various political parties here in Ireland and, in doing so, help them choose the party that is best suited for their own personal needs and goals.

Notes: All information contained in this article was provided directly from the presidents of each participating party, so bias should not be an issue. I must stress, however, that participation by parties in this particular article in no way implies membership in – or any kind of endorsement whatsoever of – the Guild itself. In most cases, party presidents were not even made aware of the Guild project at the time the information was collected. They were simply told that it was for an article I was writing.

Important Definitions:

Before you read on, please take a moment to familiarize yourself with a few important definitions and clarifications (below). Because many of the profile items were multiple-choice in nature, it important that they responses be understood in relation to the other possibilities that the respondent could have chosen. Some examples are included in the definitions below.

Functional Focus: The most important day-to-day function or goal of the party (multiple choice alternatives below)
1) Policy / ideology
2) Community / activity / social / fun
3) Candidate quality / responsibility / collective reputation

Ideological Priority: The ideological domain that the party considers to be the most important to them in general (multiple choice alternatives below)
1) Foreign Affairs
2) Economy
3) Social & Military Organization
4) No Ideological Orientation

[IDEOLOGY] Economic Orientation (multiple choice alternatives below)
1) Strongly Right: Generally favor lower taxes, fewer state-based supply programs, more international trade, and less government intervention in the economy
2) Somewhat Right
3) Moderate: Neither right nor left, or mixed
4) Somewhat Left
5) Strongly Left Generally favor higher taxes, more state-based supply, and more government intervention in the economy
6) No Ideological Orientation: This is NOT the same as “moderate”

[IDEOLOGY] Social & Military Organization (multiple choice alternatives below)
1) Strongly Authoritarian: Generally favor greater military centralization including increased state influence (although not necessarily control) over private MUs; believe that government programs should be the primary focus of social life; favor strict immigration laws and organized enforcement
2) Somewhat Authoritarian
3) Moderate
4) Somewhat Libertarian
5) Strongly Libertarian: Generally favor the use of private MU’s and their independence from the state; believe that private organizations and individuals should be the primary focus of social life in Ireland; favor a more open immigration policy
6) No ideological orientation: This is NOT the same as “moderate”

Policy Approach: This refers to the general approach to policy-making that a party takes (i.e. the nature of the policy-making process itself rather than the specific ideology/policies it favors) (multiple choice alternatives below)
1) Very traditional: Favor laws and government programs that are “tried and true” (i.e. proven to work well in the past); “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” mentality
2) Somewhat traditional
3) Leaning traditional
4) Mixed
5) Leaning progressive
6) Somewhat progressive
7) Very progressive : Favor experimentation when it comes to policy-making, even if current policies are already somewhat effective; “change for the sake of change” mentality

Congress Award Donation Policy: This refers to the practice that some parties have of requiring or encouraging its members who are elected to congress to donate some or all of the gold from their congress award to the national treasury to help fund MPPs and other essential programs.
1) Encouraged: Party presidents tell their members that it is a good idea to donate but the practice is not enforced
2) Enforced: Party presidents require their members to donate and have a method of punishing those who do not comply (e.g. giving them lower priority in the next congress elections)

This concludes the January-February edition of Profiles of Irish Political Parties. I hope you found this information to be useful.

If you wish to become involved in the Guild, either as a publisher/analyst or as a participating party, just send me a PM or find me on #TheGuild. In addition, I am looking for critical feedback on this profiling system so that each month we can make improvements. Is there any important information missing from the profiles? Are certain things unnecessary/silly or don’t make sense? Are the ideological groupings and their definitions fair/accurate/useful? Constructive comments are highly encouraged. In addition, thoughts about the feasibility and future of the Guild in general are also welcome in the comments section.

Thank you for reading!
