~Some Clarification: Economic and Foreign Affairs
Many of you wonder what the import, VAT, and income taxes do; those of you who do understand what they mean often jump to misinformed conclusions. Such people have even been trying to play the blame-game, posting hate articles. Though I am not going to point fingers, I will say that if you have a personal problem with me, try bringing it up with me before the public. It is not only an act of courtesy, but an act of respect, too.
That said, the following is an attempt to explain not only how VAT/income/import taxes work and affect, but why America needs what I have advised congressmen to take into consideration.

Citizens are constantly coming in and out of our country, but lately it's been more the former than the latter. If you are a new citizen, you realize what your first thoughts are. You probably want to get your hands on a few days’ worth of food, maybe a weapon, and then start saving for a house. Since there are so many new citizens, this means that the low quality weapons market, as well as the food market, is going to prosper. More sales means more taxes collected. More taxes collected means the more USD taken out of our economy, money that is not being injected through printing, but, rather, the citizen fees of this post-V1 baby boom era.
Our dollar is, frankly, weaker than what many would like it to be, myself and my economic council included. Higher taxes are installed in order to decrease the total USD in our country, thus regulating the ratio between USD and gold, leading towards a more valuable dollar. The reason why VAT is being increased in all markets is because sales are at an all-time high. More sales, as mentioned before, means more taxes collected. Thus, with the increase in tax percentage, our dollar will become more valuable.
If you are a worker and are complaining about a higher income tax, then I kindly ask you to quit bitching (Maybe that was contradicting). The most you can possibly be taxed daily is 2 dollars a day, and that is if you are making 40+ a day as is, meaning that money to you probably isn’t that hard to come by. If you are a general manager and are complaining about this tax, that means that you don’t know how to get around it or are simply too lazy to do so. If you do not know how to get around the income tax as a GM, here is how:
Place 0.01 gold in an account other than your company account on the monetary market. Have this exchange be going for “1 gold = (insert your company’s amount of USD here) * 100. Have your company buy the 0.01 gold and you will be left with 0.01 gold in your company + all of the USD in your personal account, yours to use however you like. The reason why I am posting this publicly is because I support those who not only read my newspaper, but the media every day. Consider me someone who is pro-active.
My economic council and I have figured out that when it comes to taxing raw materials, there isn’t much collecting you can get other than import tax. Because of this, expect some drops in import taxes in Iron and Diamonds. Justinious McWalburgson III, my vice-president and a well-respected congressman, has already proposed this low-import tax for iron. If you are a foreign company and have excess iron stock, I invite you to explore the low-taxed United States’ iron market. If you are a domestic iron employee and are simply looking to profit in your own market, realize that we won’t let prices get TOO low and, if it ever comes to that, we will raise the import tax properly. Foreign and domestic diamonds company owners, expect similar changes when the diamonds import tax is lowered.

Many of you have been wondering whether the US is going be ever be officially involved in a war or not sometime soon. I have this to say: grow some patience. If you are in the army or national guard, then I feel your pain. We are supposed to be at war right now, but the declare war button is bugged, says N3m0 of Indonesia. If you are the type of person who is immature enough to blame me for this, then you might as well be immature and blame the administrative team too. If you do not know for some reason, the United States has a Mutual Protection Pact (MPP) with Argentina, an ally of the United States who belongs in the same alliance as us – Atlantis. While I do not look down upon Brazil, Indonesia, nor Spain for their conquest, I am commanding the US army, national reserves, and marines to defend Argentina for they are our South American friends. Brazil and Indonesia have not only declared war on Argentina in this war, but America as well, for we are going to be directly involved to the point where we can defend from our home land.
Those who think I wrote my article that announced that our great country were not to support Spain, realize this was in spite of a hasty declaration of war – one that no Atlantis countries were informed about. As Tantis said, we should not cry over spilled milk. I ask that all Americans be supportive of Spain in their war with Portugal, whenever that is going to occur.
Soon, congressional elections are going to take place. If you think that you are educated enough to vote in these elections, I ask that you do several things – 1) Read my article on being a congressman (http://www.erepublik.com/en/article/-how-to-congress--699660/1), 2) Look up each candidate’s newspaper, and 3) Register and attend the US forums, monitoring the Legislative board (http://erepublikusa.com/forums/index.php?board=8.0).

Since we have a considerably large army- why not fight?-What are we afraid of?
If we get involved in another war now, we will not be able to completely defend Argentina. They need all the defense they have. Aside from that, Atlantis countries will have mixed feelings of war considering that the Spanish have just entered war with Portugal, too. We don't want to scatter our troops too much to the point where we have no organization or backup, we want to strike as an alliance like I predict PEACE is going to do.

What I am about to write may come as a surprise to some of you but I never made my oppinion clear on the spain/portugal war out of respect for benn and because, as ambassador, I have to respect the options of my president.
But this is national discussion and I want to give my oppinon:
About a week ago, PrUdEn (Spain's president) sent to congress a war proposal. As you all know, that proposal was accepted, by the majority of their congress (that's part of the presidents party and forum). But even before that proposal was accepted a lot of people, myself included, condemned the actions of the spanish president. Also included in that group of people is/was(?) our own president. (i'm sure you all remember this: http://www.erepublik.com/en/article/-usa-does-not-support-recent-spanish-actions--698922/1 )
But apparently this war is no longer a "careless action" but something else. What exactly? Nobody seems to be able to explain...
People may not want to "cry over spilled milk" but I find myself thinking: HOW THE HELL DO YOU ARRIVE TO THAT CONCLUSION?
It's not worth crying over spilled milk? What happens when another country of Atlantis decides to declare war (and that time will surely come, sooner or later) without consulting the rest of their allies? Will then be the time to cry over spilled milk?
Because this "atlantis" alliance is starting to remind me of the parent that keeps saying to their kid: Next time you do that you're getting grounded! And the next time they do it, they get another "warning", and the next time, another warning and another and another.
But what is most important here is this: If we cant make the members of our own alliance show any kind of respect, how can we expect any kind of respect from the rest of the world?

Nice article Benn Dover. When you talked about the import taxes, I thought about the Laffer curve in taxation. They are too high for foreign competitors to try bust our market. Meanwhile, our consumers could benefit from foreign competition (lower prices for us), and we would get more tax revenue despite lowering the tax rate (because now there will actually be foreign companies doing business here)!

@Blindness: I can see what you are coming from, but where did I say that I condemned the actions of PrUdEn? I never did. I've been very clear, especially in that article that received the attention of over 200 votes, that I am NOT against conquest wars. Hell, I'm not even against the current South American war. What I was saying is that I was frustrated/annoyed that Spain did not alert Atlantis prior to war declaration; so your hypothetical:

It seems that you are against my views, as in, fully against conquest wars. If that is the case, then fear not, because I'm not exactly the dictator that everybody makes me out to be. If we are going to send troops to Spain, it will be because congress voted to do so. If we do not sent troops to Spain, it will be because congress said so. Granted, I am the Commander in Chief, my word is final, but I am going to take into account the general views of our congress.
So, no, I am not contradicting myself, not flip-flopping. If anything I have been successful in maintaining an unbiased point of view with regard to conquest wars. The reason why I support Argentina is because they are in Atlantis, and because we are not only contracted to help them, but morally contracted as well - they have been our friends since the start of PANAM.

I am also against putting the US in 2 wars at once. Particularly when we have absolutely nothing to gain from that Spain vs. Portugal war... Except maybe a few extra gifts and weapons sold... I'm sorry but I cannot understand why the US would support this war..
