***Press Secretary Tutorials :: Media Guide***

Day 417, 18:00 Published in USA USA by Uncle Sam

I have recently been appointed Press Secretary. This position will have me working with the Department of Education quite a bit as well as working regular duties on the media and updating the population, keeping them in the know. To kick things off I have decided to write a series of articles similar to what Lowell Kennedy did with his top 50 USA citizens. In this I'll be releasing different tutorials frequently. Today I bring you the first of many tutorials, update for current V1 times.

**Starting a Newspaper**

When getting involved with the media, it is very important to have a newspaper. To create one for yourself you must have 2 gold and exp level 6. Once you have gathered these necessary components, go to my places, newspaper and you'll be given a guide on how to get a newspaper. When creating a newspaper you'll want to make sure you give it a name that is both cleaver, innovative and fits your personality. Find a picture or create one that matches the title of your newspaper and upload it. Once you've created your newspaper you're ready to get involved.

**Writing Articles**

Formatting
When writing article you'll have to focus on a couple of things to make it successful. One of the most important things about writing an article is making the format attractive and easy to read. This can be done in a multitude of ways through block paragraphs or in titled sections. Here's what to stay away from when writing an article. excessive bolding can make an article look sloppy. Do not use bold in any random places in the middle of paragraphs. Try to limit bolded sections in your paragraphs to one of two. Also, make sure you only bold sentences or segments that are supposed to have bigger meaning or importance. This exagerates the point so people know what to focus on. Bolding section titles is also useful so people keep the main idea of what they're reading in mind.

Another thing to avoid is excessive spacing. Do not writ articles that have paragraphs spaced 4 or 5 lines apart as it's annoying to scroll through and makes the reader lose focus. having 1 or 2 lines between main subjects in the article is acceptable as it helps set apart separate points that are presented. Finally the overall format of an article is up to you, whether you want to have an opening paragraph that outlines what you'll be writing about or just jumping into the subject matter. Signatures and closing remarks are also good formatting tools so long as they are kept short. Title formats are also a way to give recognition to your newspaper, such as ***Title***, ~Title~ or -Title-. Be respectful of other players and don't use similar title formats as it will confuse readers.

Subject Matter
When writing article, remember one thing, keep it Erepublik related. Quite simply, don't write anything about real life unless it has significant connection to erepublik as it will be marked as spam reported and the article will in turn be deleted by admin magic. When it comes to the topics you can write about there are many options. Players can write updates on the economy, military events, government status, alliance information, elections or historical events. Articles can also be innovative and write about say the top 50 Americans, complete history of war, or a documentary of an erepublicans life. Articles can also be about interviews with big players or suggestions to make the game better. There are all kinds of things you can write about in erepublik, just as long as it's relevant and accurate.

when in the process of writing the article, you need to make sure you know what you're talking about. You can post an article full of lies to joke around, but in order to have a successful article, post one that shows evidence of knowledge on the topic it's written about. research can be done on the topics by talking with players in the know or by looking up facts on erepublik pages such as economical stats and numbers. Don't stray off topic in an article and change the focus in the middle to a completely different subject. keep an article down to the point and people will have an easier time understanding you.

Word Choice and Grammar
Finally, please use spell check when you're about to publish an article. Nothing is worse than an article with many spelling and grammar errors. Also, you want to have an certain tone when writing. you can have a serious tone and use sophisticated words or a relaxed mood in the article and write using simple words that just get the point across. You can also chose to take stances in your article if you're reporting on events. the stance is your choice, but write from that perspective.

**Reading, Commenting on & Voting Articles**

First, to find articles you must go to Community in your top tabs, then click on media. From there you can find your way around between latest, top rates and international news. When reading articles hopefully they're well written enough to the point where it's enjoyable to read. After you've read it make a comment if you wish, just make sure that, like when writing an article, you know what you're talking about. It is suggested that you read a lot of article as much of what is in the media will educate you as to what's going on in erepublik. Finally if you like what you're reading or if you agree with the subject matter, vote up the article. If it's something important that you think more people should see vote it as well. Don't be afraid to vote something up, people won't know it's you and it only benefits the people that wrote it and the others that read it.

**Subscribing**

Finally if you are reading a lot of articles from a newspaper and you like what they write it's suggested that you subscribe to their newspaper. When subscribed, you'll receive an alert in your subscriptions section. This is extremely useful for those newspapers that always provide the community with top notch information. Subscribe to as many newspapers as you want, doing this will always give you links to the articles that will help you grow as a citizen. Once you have done all this you are set to go off and do your own thing in the media.

A wise man once said that involvement in the media opens many doors to a citizens. This is so true, as media gets you more recognition than being a war hero or a business man. Being active in the media is the key to success in erepublik, especially in the world of politics. I hope everyone takes advice from this tutorial to heart, and applies it to their lives in the media.

Best Regards,
-Uncle Sam-
Press Secretary
