[New Era] The Shadow Cabinet and a possible Constitution

Day 1,997, 05:03 Published in United Kingdom United Kingdom by Sven Goran Duran-Duran

Firstly, let me say I was overwhelmed by the response I got for New Era Shadow Cabinet applications. I have therefore expanded the programme to include more deputies and reshuffled a bit.

If you pm'd me and I haven't managed to accomodate you in this first shadow Cabinet then I will have already pm'd you and apologised and hopefully offered you a satisfactory compromise.

Some of the shadow ministers and deputies above have absolutely no experience in the equivalent Government roles and for them this is a bit of a learning exercise. I'm counting on them to show enthusiasm with no strings attached.

Some have a lot of experience or are already fluent in their field and I am counting on them to lead the debate for New Era in their specific shadow ministry whilst also, importantly, training the deputies that serve under them and familiarising them with the issues relevant to the department.

I will be in touch directly with all New Era Shadow Ministers and deputies shortly in order to clarify with them what exactly their roles and objectives are.

For now however, please join me in congratulating and wishing luck to our first New Era Shadow Cabinet \o/

Further to my last article and again in specifc reference to my manifesto I now want to ask the membership of New Era to vote on whether we as a party should now think about codifying some of what we stand for in a Party Constitution.

To reiterate what I was saying in my manifesto, I think that following some of Goku's Policy and Democracy articles see here we as a party seem to agree already on a lot of what we are all about.

Why have a constitution?

I think a constitution would be useful for New Era to do things like:

- make the Shadow Cabinet a permanent feature of New Era (*if it's a success!)

- lay out the rules for PP Primaries elections and other votes for party matters

- give new players an immediate and clear reference point in answer to the question "so what does your party stand for?"

- we could guarentee the New Era Bank's debts against the Party

The above is not an exhaustive list of reasons and they are just my 2pence worth.

There are of course reasons why we shouldn't have a constitution.

For example, not having one would give future PPs more flexibility. It might sound a bit stuffy too or maybe a bit useless.

What would be in the Constitution?

Well that's upto you, the membership. I'm certainly not intending to draft one here. This is just about asking the membership of New Era whether they think they want it or not. I have given some examples above as to what could feasibly go in a constitution but nothing is set. We would need to discuss that in detail as a party.

The Vote

So onto the voting. Please reply to my first message below with a simple YES or NO to the question:

Do you think New Era should have a constitution?

If you want to discuss the issue further or are from another party and want to post constructive stuff below, pls do not do so in the voting thread.

The vote will finish at 12pm on 11th May UK time.

Thanks, and keep the faith brothers o/
