I have been asked recently about the use of gold by a new citizen. This got me thinking as to be honest I am not sure of my knowledge entirely so I may have some ideas and thoughts that might be flowing the wrong way etc.
I also tend to write how I think so there is seemingly no connection between certain subjects in this article, if you look at it from a different point of view you may actually see one in the vaguest sense of the word.

Now that I have done my ramblings now on to the main part of the article.



What is gold and how do I get my hands on it?

Gold from the old English word geolo (yellow); Au from Latin; aurum (gold)
Gold has been known and highly valued since pre-historic times. It may have been the first metal used by humans and was valued for ornamentation and rituals.

Gold can also be gotten via receiving medals. This will get you 5 gold for each medal you get. The list of these medals and how to achieve them can be found here: http://wiki.erepublik.com/index.php/Achievements

Gold can also be gotten from using the monetary market effectively.

Gold can also be received if friends have been invited by using your account. You get 10% of all the gold that they make.

What can I use gold for?

Gold can be used for a multitude of things.
It can be used to:
-purchase companies
-upgrade companies
-upgrade your training centre
-purchase training bonuses
-buy energy bars/health
-purchase bazooka parts (only when plato turns this option on.)
-purchase citizenship currency
-change the name of a military unit (only the commander of the military unit can do this.)

What would you advise me to do with the gold I have?

It all depends on how you view this game and what you enjoy. If you one of those who likes running large corporations full of employees, perhaps uses the gold to upgrade your food or weapon factories. This can cost a vast sum of gold so it is not advised until later when you are able to self supply yourself and are fairly confident with the game.

If you are aiming to self supply and make a profit perhaps spend it all on Q1 food or weapon companies. Weapon companies are decent at creating a small profit and also the weapons can be used in the battlefield saving some money that you might have spent on the weapons otherwise. Food is also useful to you just like weapons as you can consume it for health or sell it.

There are advantages and disadvantages for upgrading/buying a new company.
It costs more to upgrade a company and I don't think you make any serious profit with workers until you get a Q4 company but upgraded food companies produce wellness that takes up less space in your inventory than when using a lesser food company.
Upgraded weapons companies are able to sell their weapons for a greater price due to increased damage and the number of times the weapons can be used. unlike food as the cost of each wellness point is about the same, I think it is something like 0.33 iep per wellness last I checked.

Purchasing a new company costs less in the short term and quickly makes a bit of profit but it requires more wellness to work in them than if working in an upgraded company.

I.E. If I worked in 2 Q1 food factories it would produce about 140 Q1 food each which is about 560 wellness worth of food but I had to spend 20 wellness to work in each as well as the cost of the raw materials.
On the other hand if I worked in a Q2 food factory I would produce about 140 Q2 food which is about 560 wellness for the cost of 10 wellness and the cost of the raw materials.

Spending it on energy bars or bazookas is pretty much a no-no unless you have some means of creating a tidy profit as these won’t really be useful at low levels.

It is advised to use the 0.19g booster everyday as along with increasing your strength by a small amount, it decreases the number of days until yu get the super soldier medal and it is also the best for value training booster.

If you decide to try out the monetary market double check everything you do as you might accidently sell you gold for 0.001 iep instead of the other way around. I also know some people who might be of help if you want some advice.
