| NHS - Intro

In this Community, I enjoy reading other people’s articles. In occasions, I’ll agree to with the author, sometimes not, and others I will have to get a dictionary just to understand. However when I read an article by Frixios2000...I came to realize that it struck a chord. In regards to the NHS - National Health Service. Many new players aren’t necessarily aware of the Program and it doesn’t get as much recognition as it deserves. When contacting Madelina, she’d agreed to do an Interview. Below are the Questions and Dialogue received from the Director of NHS.

| Interview with NHS Director

Colin:
Q1: Firstly thank you for your time. Could you outline the role that the NHS plays in the eUK to new players (I include myself in that category)?

Madelina de Melrose:
New players are handicapped by a few things: not understanding the game mechanics, thinking it’s just about clicking the “fire” button - and by not having enough energy, strength or gold to grow quickly enough to overcome the ennui that develops after a few days of 2-clicking.

The NHS exists to help new players. We provide them with energy in the form of food commensurate with their growth over each 24-hour period, with a cap on the maximum (currently 100 q5 or equivalent). We also advise them not to go hog-wild with the fighting but to conserve their strength, and to hoard their resources until training upgrades go on sale.

A less material benefit for new players is that they get to have contact with someone else in the game, giving them a point of contact when they have questions or concerns. Many new players have gone from NHS patient to active participants in many aspects of the game.

We do have a few requirements to enroll in the NHS programme. First and foremost, the “patient” must be a citizen of the eUK. When they sign up, one of the NHS Directors will have a look at their profile. If they are very low in points, we watch them for a few days to make sure they have some growth. On their first day in the programme, they get 50 q5 food (or equivalent). From then on, it depends on their growth. If they do not grow for 14 days in a row, they are dropped from the programme and must reapply if they become active again. We understand life occasionally throws a googlie at people, but there is a bit of work involved for our “Lunch Ladies” (those who do the supplying) and we don’t want to waste their time on those who have left the game. We keep our patients until they reach Level 32, at which time they should be well enough established to do well on their own. At times, we’ve had to lower that bar, due to resource constraints, but currently we are able to supply to that level.

Colin:
Q2: As a non-governmental organization I would assume you rely heavily on the generosity of the eUK citizens. Ideally what supplies is the NHS looking to have donated to them and how do you donate supplies to the NHS?

Madelina de Melrose:
We do rely entirely on the generosity of eUK citizens, and most have been very generous. Donations should be sent to me or to Dr Kawishiwi, we’re the two Directors of the NHS. Dr K has been a Director for probably almost as long as the NHS has been in existence, I think! I started out as a Lunch Lady about two years or so ago and became a Director a good year or so back. Because the NHS does not have a separate storage facility, we store them in our own warehouses - and keep meticulous records so we know what is ours and what is NHS. Due to space constraints, we find q5 food to be the best option. Pounds Sterling and gold is always welcome, too.

Colin:
Q3: On the same note you must require an active group of volunteers to distribute the aid where it is required. Are you always looking to recruit new volunteers and how would you go about volunteering your services?

Madelina de Melrose:
Absolutely! It’s a great way to become more involved in eRep and the eUK without diving straight into politics!

Anyone interested in taking part can message me. Right now our patient list is not very long - we’ve had a lot of graduates and, unfortunately, a few quit the game) so even just one person could easily cover the daily run, but it’s better to have more Lunch Ladies so we can cover for each other as needed.

Colin:
Q4: As a new player myself it can be daunting and not always easy to find the information that can make your early days in the game a little bit easier. So for any new players reading the article, how do they contact you for help?

Madelina de Melrose:
Go to the “find player” box on the top right-hand corner and type in Madelina de Melrose - I think I’m the only one with that name! Then click on my name, followed by the little envelope icon and send me a message!

Sometimes I can’t get online in a day, though, so don’t be concerned if it takes me a day or two to reply.

Colin:
Q5: Are there any restriction on who can receive assistance from the NHS and if so what are they?

Madelina de Melrose:
Must be a citizen of the eUK, active and under Level 32. We do not discriminate in any way - there’s no favouritism based on political party, MU or prior citizenship.

But if you do change citizenship, we will have to drop you from the programme.

Colin:
Q6: Finally, Do you think awareness of the NHS needs to be raised and if so how do you think it can be done?

Madelina de Melrose:
We do put out articles, but the game mechanics make it difficult to reach those who really need the information. They aren’t already subscribed to our newspapers (which are what we generally have to use) and there’s no mechanism to send a message to “everyone who joined since x” or “all those in the eUK under level y”.

I hope all the political parties when they send a welcome note to new members (you are all doing that, aren’t you?) remind them to check us out.

A few things would help: any NHS article, please help us get a gazillion votes so it shows up on the hot list. When you send out messages, put the “join the NHS” link icon at the bottom of the message. Any time a newer player asks something, add “Don’t forget: join the NHS programme” at the end of your reply. And petition Plato to add something so we can send out mass messages to groups within various parameters.

FINALLY, I would like to add that some time ago we started eBrit University; I am the Chancellor of that institution. It is a programme run separately from the NHS where “students” complete fairly simple tasks (one of the earliest is to post an icon, another is to join an MU) and on completion of each task they are given a small reward, food, money, weapons or gold. The concept is to introduce them to aspects other than 2-clicking. Anyone who wishes to take part can contact me.

I really appreciated the time Madelina took out of her busy schedule for this interview. Apparently those local bingo halls trashed by Rebel Grandmother Motorbike Gangs doesn’t organise itself. It is important to have hobbies.

In all Seriousness, it is a valuable and worthy organization to have in the game and the “Lunch Ladies” give their time & assistance out of the goodness of their heart. The established players please continue/start to donate your time and resources to the NHS. If you are a new player listen to Madelina’s advice and sign up to the NHS. They are there to help you and guide you in your early days in the game.

Few final points from me, the MoEd Newsletter always contain links and will take you to the NHS (on the bottom of every MoEd Article) and subscribe to the NHS newsletter so you don’t miss what you are up to. Lastly, new players make sure to check out eBrit University.
