25th March 2009: I was first elected to eUK's Congress.
15th April 2009: I became Party President of the Radical Freethinker's Alliance.
5th May 2009: I became UK MoFA.
Today I will tell you how I managed such increidible quick progress as a newbie matched by only a handful of UK Citizens, what stopped my progress and how I started to progress again.
There is one pearl of wisdom here in paticular which I think is very relevant at the moment...
Created by years of dedicated effort!
First Lesson: Training Wars
As soon as I started, I immediatly started to master the mechanics of the game which super charged my progress from newb to congress ready in just 3 weeks.
Back then it took months to level up enough in the UK to run for Congres. This was because the UK was not invovled in any wars so we got no fighting experience points! I moved to the USA which had a war and fought against Mexico until I reached Congress level, luckily reaching it just a few days before the election!
I joined the 5th rank "Freethinking Party" which had lots of free space for Congressmen to candidiate, so even a new player like myself could get a good slot. Jackpot?
Game Mechanics Mastery 101: Training Wars
That wars are essential is the first lesson I learned in eRepublik, experience points, rankpoints and medalgold still flow from training and real wars today.
I invented the concept of "Training Wars" and presented some detailed maths and steps for implementation to the UK when I came back from my traning in the USA. I was sneered at by the forum elite of the time, they didn't get it. Thankfully USA also invented training wars in parallel to me and implemented the first a couple of months later, so I don't have to write an article on this today since we now have them!
If I was listened to back then though, the UK could have had the credit for the invention of training wars and may even be a little higher up the country rankings.
The lesson the elite should always remember is that I tend to be right
Second Lesson: Top 5 Parties
My joy at being selected for Congress so early was tempered with the immediate dissapointment that I was apparently one of three active people in the party (Vyett Yansir and Anaxima being the others). Worse, it was imminently going to drop to 6th place and lose it's Congress slots.
Many players had left the ruling UK Reform Party and created a brand new party as part of it's internal power struggles - Liberal Social Democrats (LSD). Now 6th place and gaining members, it was about to destroy my new player dreams of Congress.
I expended alot of effort campaigning in the next few days and got just enough new members to keep the Freethinking Party in the Top 5 for the Congress election, also getting myself elected Congressman. LSD would never gain any Congress slots and disbanded a few months later to rejoin UKRP, utterly destroyed by my personal efforts.
Game Mechanics Mastery 102: Top 5 Parties
The mistake which LSD made was to create a brand new party instead of taking over an old inactive party because of eMorals, not only does it waste gold, it stunts party growth in several ways:
1) Dead/Inactive/Multi Players pad the numbers.
Only a moderate percentage of the top parties are actually active. 100% of the smaller parties are active and they may even have more actives than the big parties, but they don't have any padding.
2) Newbies valuble ranking.
Newbies weight the rank of a party, it's name, it's avatar, contact with it's members and what they will gain when choosing a party to join. Ranking counts for alot and in paticular the #1 ranked party gets ALOT of "free" members who value ranking the best.
3) Active players want congress.
The active players who are the driving force behind your party want to run for congress, it's why they write articles, design graphics, recurit other players and suggest policies. If they lose out on running for congress month after month, they WILL leave.
Taken together, this means that your sub Top 5 party is probally not going to succeed. Let's look at those who did:
* BEP floundered around 5th spot for almost it's entire life battling the shadow of MDU and acheived nothing.
* ESO rose through the ranks quickly but it passed up the free ~50 member padding from RFA and passed up a significant amount of momentum which stopped it from taking on UKRP or TUP.
** UKPP and New Era grew over a few months because their leaders could afford to run a Military Unit in parallel to attract members, when they could have sprang into the Top 5 immediatly for free.
We are talking one successful attempt per YEAR to get Top 5 here, against an ever changing list of challengers.
Party rankings are the key...
So what do you suggest I do Goku?
Well firstly my progress stopped because I got bogged down in forum politics, it restarted when I left, creating a massive blackhole of wasted efforts as I chased that red herring laid by the forum elite. Just don't bother and keep your activities to the actual game.
Now, I understand the desire to have control and create your own party. It is fun! Simple as that. However I am all about long term thinking.
After a month or two of little progress because of the issues I have listed and no fault of their own, the sparkle may wear off leading to a talented and enthusiastic player quitting the game is frustration. Here are two options to make things a little easier.
1) My party idea is seriously amazing and/or I have some great guys to back me up.
Join an inactive Top 5 Party and have you and your friends take it over on the 15th during Party President elections. Screw claims of "eMorals", this is just Democracy. If you win then more people want your vision and you deserve the party and it's Congress slots more.
This is the method I used in the UK and in Japan to get Radical Freethinkers Alliance and Godzilla Party going, both were actually only slight modifications of the original parties but became quite succsessful because of my tweaks.
ESO, UKPP and NE would be bigger right now if they had done this. LSD and the other failed challengers would have made it if they used this method.
UKRP is currently the inactive Top 5 party to target.
2) I only have generic political ideas but I really want to get involved at a high level and have influence.
Most serious challengers for the Top 5 only have a basic name and ideas, but the players are driven and want to succeed.
Band together with other sub Top 5 parties and break through into Congress together. Your ideas may not actually be that different and such a concentration of active and hungry players is bound to breed great things. All of the players in all of the sub Top 5 parties merged together is a top 5 party!
PCP is currently the sub Top 5 party to gather in.
It only needs ~20 of you to read this and join PCP to bump it up into the Top 5, making you have real influence in the political makeup of the UK. PCP is small enough for you to get noticed and get your views heard and implemented, but established enough to have some of the padding and interesting party aspects which you will need to be a success.
So, give it a think and get yourself into the Top 5 ASAP.
Of course I would prefer you to join my party! New Era:
