Malheureusement, nous n'avions pu aller au bout de l'entrevue.

Quelques minutes seulement après que j'eu posé mes premières questions, le téléphone portable d'xShuMy s'était mis à vibrer avec insistance sur la table de verre qui nous séparait. Raccrochant subitement, il se confondit en excuses et sortit en vitesse de son bureau, invoquant une affaire de la plus haute importance. Naturellement, je quittai les locaux du Progreso Argentino pour le moins dépité. Je me trouvai là, devant les hautes grilles du bâtiment du parti, sans la moindre réponse exploitable. C'est alors que mon propre téléphone portable se rappela à mon bon souvenir. Soudain tiré de mes pensées moroses, je tâtonnai mon veston à la recherche de l'appareil.

Un message provenant de Chypre.

"Êtes attendu dans deux jours
à Nicosie. Allez rencontrer le président
de l'UCP. Bon voyage."

La ville était en ébullition. Nicosie bouillonnait. Toute l'énergie provoquée par la fougue de ce jeune pays s'offrait à mes yeux. Depuis mon dernier voyage en Macédoine il y a quelques mois, l'occasion ne m'avait pas encore été donnée de percevoir autant d'excitation et de fébrilité au sein d'une seule et même communauté. Chypre semblait être baignée de l'aura de la Nation qui marche inexorablement vers sa destiné, celle d'un pays qui a souffert et qui souhaite désormais faire sa place parmi les "grands"...
Nonchalamment, je jetai encore une fois un œil à l'adresse qui m'avait été indiquée. Je rangeai le petit papier froissé dans la poche de mon veston et tournai à l'angle de la rue. Je m'étais engagé dans une sorte d'impasse : des façades blanches aux balcons de fer forgé barraient le fond de la rue et jetaient leur ombre sur une petite place arborée au centre de laquelle trônait un majestueux olivier. A son pied, une petite table avait été installée, et le président de l'United Cyprus Party m'y attendait. Il se leva, sourire aux lèvres, et me serra chaleureusement la main.

Je m'installai...





"Avez-vous fait bon voyage, Dhelk? me demanda Kostas morf.

- On ne peut mieux, répondis-je en lui rendant son sourire. Puis-je me permettre de vous demander pourquoi cet endroit, Kostas? Je m'attendais plutôt à mener cette entrevue dans vos locaux.

- Excellente question. Je vous dirai simplement que l'olivier est un symbole très important pour notre pays. Les rameaux de l'olivier figurent même sur le drapeau de notre belle nation. Lorsque nous serons arrivés au terme de cette entrevue, et que vous aurez cerné l'identité du parti que je représente, vous comprendrez aisément pourquoi j'ai choisi cet endroit", m'annonça-t-il.

L'entrée en matière était des plus réussies, il était parfaitement arrivé à aiguiser ma curiosité. Après nous être confortablement installés dans nos fauteuils d'osier, je lançai l'interview.

"Pour débuter cette interview, Kostas, je vous propose de m'en dire un peu plus sur le parti que vous dirigez. Quelles valeurs prône-t-il? Quelle idéologie défend-il? Et surtout, où se situe-t-il sur la scène politique chypriote?

"Nous nous considérons comme un parti centriste et libéral. La valeur que nous défendons avant tout est celle de la démocratie", déclara-t-il avec fièreté.
"Au quotidien, nous nous efforçons de lui rendre hommage en faisant participer l'ensemble de nos membres à chacune de nos prises de décisions. C'est un travail harassant, mais qui témoigne de notre volonté de faire de Chypre une nation aux institutions démocratiques. Ainsi, notre objectif principal n'est autre que la capacitation de la sphère chypriote, en parallèle des protectorats étrangers. Néanmoins, nous ne sommes pas sectaires : bien que nous prônons la responsabilisation des chypriotes dans les affaires courantes de la nation, notre parti est composé à la fois de Grecs, de Turcs et de Chypriotes. Récemment, nous avons finalisé notre projet de création de Military Unit afin d'étendre notre influence au champs de bataille. Cependant, la priorité reste notre amour commun pour Chypre et le lien très fort qui nous unit autour de cet attachement patriotique. Au fond, notre manque de ressources naturelles et d'Ennemis Naturels n'est pas notre préoccupation première, mais bien le développement de la communauté toute entière".

Avec précaution, je notai l'intégralité de son propos. A l'entendre, il semblait passionné par la cause que défendait son parti. Je repris :

"L'United Cyprus Party se retrouve donc quelque peu "en marge" de la politique qui régit actuellement Chypre, et qui est celle d'iNCi. Plus généralement, comment vous décririez et analyseriez le contexte politique chypriote?

- Il est évident qu'iNCi présente un immense pouvoir sur la scène politique".

Il but une longue gorgée d'eau fraîche, puis reposa son verre devant lui.

"Depuis près de quatre mois, ils occupent la tête de l'Etat et disposent de la majorité au Congrès. Une situation qui joue bien évidemment en leur faveur, au détriment de la nôtre. Toutefois, en tant que parti politique, nous soutenons un certain nombre d'initiatives qui ne sont pour le moment pas d'actualité du côté d'iNCi".

Son expression se durcit.

"Nous soutenons par exemple activement la création d'un journal InfoDéfense quotidien, d'un Ministère dédié à l'encadrement de nos nouveaux citoyens, d'un forum externe et d'un chat IRC qui soient propres à la nation et surtout une transparence plus grande vis-à-vis de la population, ce qui est pour nous, primordial".

Maintenant que le contexte de rivalité politique était posé, je pouvais poser la question qui me taraudait depuis le début :

"Votre idéologie faisant de vous les défenseurs d'une Chypre aux mains de ses "véritables" citoyens, quelle relation entretenez-vous avec iNCi, qui est, je le rappelle, une organisation transcontinentale"?

Kostas hésita quelques secondes, puis se lança.

"Il s'agit-là d'une très bonne question", souligna-t-il avec un clin d'œil.

"Pour commencer, je tiens à rappeler qu'iNCi et nous, sommes extrêmement différents. Nous jouissons de liens avec la Chypre réelle, ce qui n'est pas leur cas. Nous reconnaissons volontiers que le protectorat militaire d'iNCi ainsi que leur politique en terme d'Affaires Etrangères ont préservé la souveraineté de notre île face aux menaces extérieures, et nous les en remercions. En ce qui concerne la défense, nous avons d'ailleurs combattu aux côtés d'iNCi. Mais pour ce qui est de la politique intérieure, nous souhaitons axer davantage les efforts de l'Etat sur le développement des institutions chypriotes. Néanmoins, nous ne sommes pas fondamentalement opposés à iNCi tant que leurs objectifs affichés restent le progrès de notre pays et le développement des citoyens chypriotes et nous restons ouverts à toute proposition de coopération".

Il avait été franc et je tenais ma réponse. Nous pouvions désormais passer à une question plus générale.

"Merci pour ces précisions, Kostas. Exit le contexte politique, intéressons-nous maintenant à la politique internationale ; Chypre a récemment annoncé son entrée dans l'Alliance TERRA. Quel peut être, selon vous, le rôle que peut jouer votre pays dans l'Alliance?

- Aux vues du chemin qu'a emprunté le Nouveau Monde depuis maintenant quelques semaines, il s'avère que la véritable puissance se situe désormais à l'échelle des alliances et non plus à l'échelle des Etats. Toutefois, le rôle des pays dans les alliances reste incontournable et, bien que Chypre ne soit pas à proprement parler une superpuissance, TERRA a bénéficié avec notre entrée d'une ouverture sur une puissance de feu des plus intéressantes. De plus, nous avons pu voir lors des dernières batailles que les chypriotes se battaient aussi bien pour les pays membres de TERRA que pour les pays membres d'EDEN. Une perspective qui nous réjouit particulièrement".

Il était temps d'aborder la dernière question.

"Kostas, je vous propose d'achever cette entrevue sur une question d'actualité : les élections du Congrès approchent à grands pas, comment abordez-vous l'évènement? Peut-on s'attendre à une véritable bataille électorale?"

Kostas changea de position et appuya négligemment son coude sur l'accoudoir du fauteuil en osier.

"Eh bien, je ne pense pas que nous puissions rivaliser avec la puissance électorale d'iNCi... Ils sont confortablement installés à la tête de la politique chypriote avec leurs deux partis (N.D.L.R : cCc iNCi cCC et iNCi KIBRIS) et devraient sans aucun problème rafler la majorité des sièges. Néanmoins, parmi les plus petits partis, il se peut que nous assistions à quelques surprises. En tout cas, chaque élection est pour nous une petite bataille, même si la véritable bataille est de faire entendre notre voix dans la politique chypriote et ainsi présenter nos idées à la population de la meilleure des manières".

La plume de mon stylo grata le papier quelques instants encore après que la voix de Kostas s'éteignit. Je reposai mon carnet.

"Kostas, merci beaucoup de m'avoir accordé cette entrevue, ce fut extrêmement enrichissant et j'ose espérer que cette interview passionnera nos lecteurs autant qu'elle m'a passionnée. Souhaitez-vous adresser un message à nos lecteurs?

- Volontiers. J'aimerais tout d'abord remercier tous les membres de l'United Cyprus Party et notre communauté pour leurs efforts quotidiens durant ces derniers mois et ceux qui ont combattu pour un pays indépendant et puissant. Aussi, je dois dire qu'Andrei Lebowski nous a particulièrement épaulés dans la création de ce parti politique. Et pour finir, j'aimerais vous remercier pour l'opportunité que vous nous donnez de présenter notre idéologie et nos actions par-delà nos frontières grâce à votre journal. Merci".

Par delà les frontières, et encore au-delà...










Regrettably, we did not have been able to go at the end of the interview.

Some minutes only after I had asked my first questions, the mobile phone of xShuMy had begun vibrating emphatically on the glass table which separated us. Hanging up suddenly, he apologized profusely and went out hurriedly of his office, calling upon an affair of the highest importance. Naturally, I left the Progreso Argentino's premises disappointed. I was in front of the high railings of the building of the party, without the slightest exploitable answer. It is then that my own mobile phone remembered itself in my good memory. Suddenly pulled out from my gloomy thoughts, I groped my jacket, looking for the device.

A message resulting from Cyprus.

"Be expected in two days
in Nicosia. Go to meet UCP's
president. Good journey. "

The city was on the boil. Nicosia bubbled. All the energy provoked by the ardour of this young country offered itself for me. Since my last travel in Macedonia a few months ago, the opportunityhad not been given to me yet to perceive so much excitement and restlessness within the same community. Cyprus seemed to be bathed by the aura of the Nation which walks inexorably towards her destiny, the destiny of a country which suffered and who henceforth wishes to get its place among the "big"...
Casually, I once again had a look at the address which had been indicated to me. I tidied up the small paper creased in the pocket of my jacket and turned in the angle of the street. I had made a commitment in a kind of impasse : white facades with balconies of wrought iron blocked the bottom of the street and threw their shade on a small raised square in the center of which throned a majestic olive tree. In its foot, a small table had been settled, and the United Cyprus Party's president waited for me there. He got up, smile on the lips, and warmly shook hands with me.

I settled down...





"Did you make good journey, Dhelk?" Kostas morf asked me.

"We cannot better", I answered returning his smile. "May I allow to ask you why for this place, Kostas"? I expected rather to lead this interview in your premises.

"Excellent question. I shall say to you simply that the olive tree is a symbol very important for our country. The twigs of the olive tree appear even on the flag of our beautiful nation. When we shall have arrived at the term of this interview, and when you will have encircled the identity of the party which I represent, you will understand easily why I chose this place", he announced me proudly.

The introduction was of the most successful, he had perfectly managed to sharpen my curiosity. Being comfortably settled to us in our armchairs of wicker, I launched the interview.

"To begin this interview, Kostas, I suggest you saying to me a little more about the party you manage. What values does it advocate? What ideology does it defend? And especially, where it is situated on the Cypriot political stage?

"We consider ourselves as a centrist and liberal party. The value which we defend above all is the one of the democracy ", he declared with pride.
"In everyday life, we try hard to pay tribute to democracy by making all members participate to each of our decision-making. It is a tiring work, but that testifies of our will to make of Cyprus a nation composed of democratic institutions. So, our main objective is the empowerment of the Cypriot sphere, in parallel of the foreign protectorates. Nevertheless, we are not sectarian : although we laud the empowerment of the Cypriots in the common business of the nation, our party is composed of Greeks, Turks and Cypriots. Recently, we finalized our project of creation of Military Unit to widen our influence in battlefields. However, the priority stays our common love for Cyprus and the very strong link which unites us around this patriotic attachment. In fact, our lack of natural resources and Natural Enemies is not our first preoccupation, but the development of the whole community".

With precaution, I noted the completeness of its comment. By hearing him, he seemed fascinated by the cause which forbade his party. I resumed :

"United Cyprus Party thus remains a little "in margin" of the politics which governs at the present time Cyprus, and which is the one of iNCi. More generally, how you would describe and would analyze the Cypriot political context?"

"It is obvious that iNCi has an immense power on the political stage".

He drank a long mouthful of fresh water, then rested his glass in front of him.

"Since about four months, they occupy the head of the State and have the majority at the Congress. A situation which plays naturally in their favour, to the detriment of ours. However, as a political party, we support certain number of initiatives which are not for the moment current preoccupations for iNCi".

His expression hardens.

"We support for example actively the creation of a daily Battle Orders newspaper, a Ministry dedicated to the supervision of our new citizens, an external forum and an IRC chan who are appropriate for the nation and especially a bigger transparency towards the population, what is for us, essential".

Now that the context of political rivalry was put, I could ask the question which tapped me since the beginning:

"Your ideology making of you the defenders of a Cyprus for the hands of its "real" citizens, what relation do you maintain with iNCi, which is, I remind it, a transcontinental organization?"

Kostas hesitated some seconds, then dashed.

"It is about a very good question there", he underlined with a wink of eye.

"To begin, I am anxious to remind that iNCi and we, are extremely different. We enjoy links with the real Cyprus, what is not their case. We recognize gladly that the military protectorate of iNCi as well as their policy in term of Foreign Affairs protected the sovereignty of our island in front of outside threats, and we thank them for it. As regards the defense, we moreover fought beside iNCi. But as for the domestic policy, we wish to centre more the efforts of the State on the development of the Cypriot institutions. Nevertheless, we are not fundamentally set in iNCi as long as their posted objectives remain the progress of our country and the development of the Cypriot citizens and we remain opened to any proposition of cooperation".

He had been frank and I held my answer. We could henceforth pass in a more general question.

"Thank you for this precision, Kostas. The political context is drawn, let us be now interested in the international policy ; Cyprus recently announced its entrance in the TERRA Alliance. What can be, according to you, the role that can play your country in the Alliance?"

"In the views of the road which took the New World from now on some weeks, it turns out that the real power is henceforth situated on the scale of the alliances and either on the scale of States. However, the role of countries in the alliances remains major and, although Cyprus is not strictly speaking a superpower, TERRA benefited with our entrance of an opening on a fire power of the most interesting. Furthermore, we were able to see during the last battles that the Cypriots fought as well for the member countries of TERRA that for the member countries of EDEN. A perspective which delights us particularly".

It was time to approach the last question.

"Kostas, I suggest you finishing this interview on a topical question : the elections of the Congress approach very quickly, how do you approach the event? Can we expect a real electoral battle?"

Kostas changed position and pressed untidily the elbow on the armrest of the wicker armchair.

"Well, I do not think that we can compete with the electoral power of iNCi... They are comfortably settled in the head of the Cypriot politics with their two parties (cCc iNCi cCC and iNCi KIBRIS) and should without any problem swipe the majority of seats. Nevertheless, among the smallest parties, it is possible that we attend some surprises. In any case, every election is for us a small battle, even if the real battle is to make hear our voice in the Cypriot politics and so present our ideas to the population of the best of the manners".

The feather of my pen scratched the paper a few moments still after the voice of Kostas went out. I based my pad.

"Kostas, thank you very much to have granted me this interview, it was extremely enriching and I dare to hope that this interview will fascinate our readers as much as it fascinated me. Do you wish to send a last message to our readers"?

"Gladly. I would like to thank all the members of United Cyprus Party and our community for their daily efforts during last months and those who fight for an independent and powerful country. Also, I must say that Andrei Lebowski helped us a lot in our first steps to create this Political Party. Finally, I would like to thank you for the opportunity you gave us to present our ideology and our actions through your newspaper. Thank you".
