[DfA] NaN, and why it's important

Day 1,963, 00:24 Published in Australia Australia by DraimAlexander

This article is part campaign article and part regular article to explain some of my thinking on our new alliance, take it for how you want it. I'll be having at least 1, possibly 2, more articles in the next couple hours. Sadly given Easter and being sick the priorities over the slightly more limited time were towards the cabinet and country, not necessarily best for reelection but best for making me feel legitimate 🙂.

There have been a lot of questions from all sides about NaN, I think most within Australia (and other small nations) get it but have questions. Those outside those small nations are mixed, and even some of those who respect the decision do not completely understand it.

Australia, and many nations, have gone through a lot of political phases regarding alliances (often more then once). However they have generally had one REAL goal in all of that: Security. I guess that's the goal for most countries but it's especially important when you're smaller in population or damage. These small countries don't want to expand, they don't want huge amounts of resources or power, they want to sit around in peace maybe do a training war or help out their allies. They can not survive against the countries surrounding them, but they want to survive, just survive.

That's where NaN comes in. South Africa and Australia had thought about the big alliances, they weren't interested. In some cases we tried (over and over again) to gain entry to those alliances, the reality was people just weren't that interested. In other cases we were part of alliances (either official or not) but didn't see the benefit that was hoped for: Big countries off fighting themselves but if they got invaded there wasn't anything to spare to help THEM.

Eventually we got fed up, we got tired and we started to realize that it just wasn't happening. We had been friends for a long time and understood each others plight and so said "dudes! There's this cool in game alliance thing, let's try that together" and that was the start. At some level the very start of it was simply because we imagined that in game alliances would eventually cost gold but that wasn't the only piece, the other piece was actually more important: We wanted to try and start a group that actually stood for what we wanted.

So what does NaN want? What does it stand for? In rough order (in my mind):

1. Maintain Congress for it's members: Congress isn't everything but it is more then many would like to admit. A country dictator can lead as much as possible but it means you have less and less people who are able to truly take part in the running of the country. It also is an enormous psychological hit, it can make you feel much less of 'a nation' which in turn (especially if it happens multiple times in a row) can lead to a very very quick decline in the moral and population of the country.

2. Maintain the core regions: We don't really want more then that, except in mutual and relatively even war we defend our core regions and stand for their integrity. Australia is Australia, South Africa is South Africa, Cyprus is Cyprus etc. Agreements can be made (SA gets money in turn for giving regions to Brazil for example) but an important and critical piece is that the sovereignty of the core regions is worth standing and fighting for.

3. Beat down common enemies: We don't expect to be able to destroy a much bigger country, even as a group. But we can become a HUGE nuisance, in the end if we can't throw out an enemy on our own or with our allies (we'll try) then we can keep banging at them until they wear down and become less willing to fight. Been there, done that, won't be the last time. This also includes trying to help nations with PTO problems whenever possible I think.

There is also the Prime reason to exist in my min😛 Pride We are Australian, we are South African, We are our country but we are also ALLIES! We can stand together, help each other and hold our head high because we don't back down. When you're a small nation under the foot of the larger it's hard to have that pride, I think we can have that pride even if we don't always win. We're a lot more likely to win if we can hold our head up high and be proud of what we stand for!

Where does it go from here? Only up in my mind. There are a lot of small nations that just want peace, come! You are welcome to apply or just to seek our information. There are also medium to large sized countries that don't like seeing smaller countries get decimated and want to remain neutral, you are also welcome!

We've done a lot of ground work but the next month or two are important for the long term survival of the alliance. We have 1 new member who will officially join the alliance about an hour from publication Cyprus! I welcome them to the fold and hope that we can see many more. We have one already being discussed after an application and more that are being talked too. It won't be easy, alliances require sacrifice at some level, but I think it's the best move for Australia and I hope other nations see it as the best move for them.
