[CP] Full Government Update & Senate Meeting on Sunday

Day 1,887, 08:31 Published in Ireland Ireland by Brian Boru

Senate Meeting:
A full IRC session of the Senate is hereby called for 11am eRepublik time on Sunday. Senators wishing to attend can post in the Senate thread in their inboxes for the IRC channel. The topics below will be discussed.

Foreign Affairs:
Negotiations with the Circle of Trust have ended, and the terms for our membership of their alliance finalised. The Senate will consider when the referendum should be held tomorrow, and the referendum itself shall feature one question: "Should the Republic of Ireland join the Circle of Trust under the following terms?" The terms of the agreement will be published two days before the referendum itself, to allow time for debate.

Immigration:
I have shut Ireland's borders temporarily due to some concerns about PTOers. The borders will be reopened Monday, and a new referral system is being considered for additional security as well as increased accountability. This has caused some difficulties, but placing security first is the only responsible path.

The Political Takeover of the Patriots:
Regardless of whether Mr JackX was involved in its organisation, it is now clear that there has been an illegitimate and successful attempt to change the leadership of the Patriots. Considering the weight of its name, the Patriots party could now engage in a highly illegal distortion of eIrish politics, the consequences of which my government cannot ignore. The government is monitoring the political situation within the Patriots Party, and the Senate shall consider a number of propositions as contingencies.

Whether or not one likes the former leadership of the party, I believe that all Irishmen and Irishwomen of good will can agree that parties and factions engaging in this sort of behaviour is a detriment to the country as a whole.

EDIT: As a matter of course, I must extend my apologies to Marinkomargarin. I thought him part of this political takeover attempt, but that was a premature assessment.

The Anglo-Canadian War:
As yesterday's more lighthearted article demonstrated, Ireland is to remain neutral in the conflict currently around us. This is for several reasons, our bid with the CoT, our improved relations with the eUK, our financial problems and the division of eIrish citizens on the issue.

I realise that this decision is not satisfactory to many citizens, or indeed, to the Canadians and British. That said, it was the only decision we could make without tearing our country apart, in more ways than one. Regardless, we reserve the right to change our stance should circumstances change.

The Senate:
I have to express my great satisfaction with the way the Senate has operated. The discussions on IRC and on the threads have been measured, and responsible decisions taken as a result of them. I can say with a certain degree of pride that we've taken a big step towards a more united political scene.
