[TUTORIAL]: Setup a freeware IRC Client

Day 1,509, 21:09 Published in USA USA by Mike Ontry

IRC

It's everywhere in this game! It seems like every organization has at least one channel. Mibbit is fine and very easy to use but what if you don't want your browser open?

You use an irc client that runs independently on your computer. A stand alone client has a few benefits. One it will allow you to stay logged in even after you close your browser giving your friends, military, party members, and whoever may need to contact you a better chance at it.

I know a lot of you already know how and have set up their own irc client. But there may be just as many of you that do not know. For those that need help a short tutorial is below.

Picking a client

I suggest a freeware client. I was planning on using mirc but found out that it's now actually shareware and is only a 30 day evaluation and $20 after that. So to avoid the annoyance of mirc asking me to purchase a license I went to Google and searched for a freeware irc client.

I chose Ice Chat because it's fully featured and I liked their website. Since I've been using it I haven't ran into any problems with it.

You can visit their site here:
Code:
http://www.icechat.net

Download the client here:
Code:

NOTE: The links are not actual links to avoid being SPAM

Step 1

First you will see the "IceChat First Time Setup" window.

Enter your irc nickname or your desired irc nickname.

Click the next button.

Step 2

Here you will have to type in :
Code:
irc.rizon.net

Click the next button.

Step 3

This screen basically tells you how to do the next step.

Step 4

Code:
Make sure "irc.rizon.net" is highlighted in your server list to the left.

Click the "Connect" button.

Step 5

Follow the on screen directions in the Rizon server console to identify.

If you already have a password type in /msg NickServ IDENTIFY yourpassword

Step 6

After you log in you may now join a channel by typing /join #channelname

That's It!
Code:
If you want to use a different client go right ahead. Just remember to connect to irc.rizon.net first and IDENTIFY then /join #channelname to join a channel. It's as simple as that!

There is a list of eUSA irc channels in the IRC-Book on the eUSA Forums.

I hope this little tutorial will help someone that doesn't really like using their web browser for chatting on irc.
