NSC NEWS & ANALYSIS CENTER BRIEFING AT 12:45 AUGUST 27, 2014: HIGHLIGHTS

(1) On August 26, President Petro Poroshenko held talks with his counterparts from Belarus, Kazakhstan and Russia, and EU officials. The sides agreed to begin consultations among Chiefs of General Staff through a trilateral contact group in order to move as rapidly as possible to a bilateral ceasefire that will be overseen by an OSCE monitoring mission.

(2) In the Novoazovsk-Mariupol area the highway is under Ukrainian control. The town of Novoazovsk is being shelled both from Russian territory and from seized positions on Ukrainian territory. All units around Mariupol have been reinforced with additional units and the 1st Operational Brigade of the National Guard has arrived with new equipment.

(3) North of Novoazovsk, Russian military and terrorists have seized the villages of Markine, Kovske, Shcherbak, Klimkino, Syedovo-Vasylivka, Kuzynets, and Rozy Luksemburg. Massive artillery fire is coming from Russian territory at the villages of Huselshchykove, Syedove, Obryv, and Kholodne. Battles rage in the vicinities of Starobesheve, Olenivka, Mariyinka, Zhdanivka, Luhansk, Donetsk, and Ilovaisk.

(4) On August 26, Ukrainian artillery near the towns of Horlivka and Ilovaisk destroyed offensive equipment belonging to the terrorists: 3 tanks, 1 AFV, 2 Grad MLRSs, 4 mortars, 1 vehicle and 1 Smerch heavy MLRS.

(5) Over the last 24 hours, ATO forces exchanged fire with the terrorists 34 times on the outskirts of 14 population centers and in Luhansk and Donetsk Airports.

(6) Donetsk militants and Russian occupying forces seized the town of Starobysheve in Donetsk Oblast and destroyed the local hospital.

(7) The situation on the border in other areas remains tense. On August 26 at 10:20, a battle took place between border patrols and a group of terrorists near Kochkarske in Donetsk Oblast.

(😎 On August 26, Russian Air Force craft violated Ukrainian air space near the town of Krasniy Chaban in Kherson Oblast, where 2 RF helicopters flew 500 m into mainland territory from the Autonomous Republic of Crimea.

(9) According to the latest information from the State Emergency Service, the total number of Ukrainian citizens who have moved from Crimea to other parts of the country is over 17,000, including about 5,000 children. The number who have moved from the ATO zone to other areas is over 115,000, including nearly 40,000 children.

(10) The Russian paratroopers of the 331st Company of the 98th Svirsk Division of the Airborne Paratrooper Forces of the RF Armed Forces who were captured on August 25 near the village of Dzerkalne, Donetsk Oblast, have already been sent to a detention center in Kyiv.

(11) In the last 24 hours, 13 Ukrainian servicemen were killed and 36 were wounded.
