Inside the Asgard HQ: five months of Asgardian foreign policy

Day 2,336, 12:48 Published in Finland Finland by TheJuliusCaesar

April 6th marked for me the end of a five-month streak of continuously serving in the Asgard HQ: as the Supreme Commander, as a president, as a minister of foreign affairs, as an Asgardian. We went through a lot during the period. We witnessed the inevitable collapse of the TWO alliance. We saw the creation of blocs around Poland and Serbia which ultimately led to the forming of Sirius and Asteria. But most importantly, we were able to make it possible for Asgard to take vital steps forward politically, militarily, as well as economically.

During the peak of the TWO's dominance, Asgard was always the underdog against her enemies, as practically every CoT and anti-TWO country was. We experienced wipes which led to economical troubles. We faced hard times fighting against even the smaller countries like Estonia, not to mention more average sized ones like Lithuania. The support of both Polish and Serbian forces to our enemies was a major obstacle to deal with, even when we (mainly Finland, though) received continuous and invaluable support from countries like Croatia, USA and China. Politically the year 2013 had been a turbulent and divided one for Asgard. We were torn apart internally by the question of accepting new members. Especially the Netherlands' application raised strong opinions both for and against. In the end, these differences in opinion led to Canada leaving Asgard. From time to time, there even were discussions of dissolving the whole alliance. This was the base we started to build on.

Well, in fact there wasn't really a base to build on, so we had to construct that too. In November, when the signs of the collapse of the TWO became more and more clear, Asgard HQ started to discuss about the future. As everyone else in the world, we started to seriously think about our possibilities and options in the future. HQ organized a meeting in which we drew some outlines for our foreign policy for the upcoming months. Being anti-Poland (hence pro-Serbia) showed up early, mostly due the fact that Poland has been supporting our main enemies, UK and former ABC countries, for so long. We just couldn’t see going with Poland as a good, rational choice for Asgard. First steps to gain stability and credibility in the alliance field were to get a lasting peace in the north, at least for the period of the alliance shuffle. We entered the peace negotiations with Lithuania and Latvia in early December, which were at the time occupying most of the Swedish cores. The peace would've been beneficial for both counterparts, Asgard and Lithuania & Latvia, as it would have given more cards to play with for both parties prior the upcoming alliance shuffle. The negotiations were held in a somewhat positive atmosphere but didn't lead to any concrete solution back then.

We also discussed with Russia and Poland about the future of the northern hemisphere in the end of December. With Russia we agreed that a peace between Asgard and our eastern neighbor is a major interest of both parties. Neither of us wanted anything bad for each other, regardless of the future affiliations. This continues the heritage of the great relations between Asgard nations and Mother Russia. Later during the same evening we held a meeting with Polish representatives regarding the same subject. Polish representatives wanted a peace in the north too, as the war was at the time draining their forces on more important fronts. Poland also strictly stated that they will continue standing with former ABC countries, especially with Estonia. This also supported and strengthened our decision of not going with Poland.

As mentioned, the peace between Lithuania and Asgard didn't work out back then. We approached Estonia with the same intentions during my presidential term in January. The war between Finland and Estonia had been raging on for years. Of course, there were minor pauses which lasted maximum of few months, but the conflict resumed shortly after both parties (or one of them) had gasped enough air and felt they would have the upper hand now. As can be noted, the decisions of peace and war between Estonia and Finland were mostly rather unilateral than commonly agreed ones. However, during January both Estonian and Finnish (Asgardian) representatives felt it was the right time to end the "eternal conflict", especially as it had evolved to a ping-pong war between the shores of the Gulf of Finland. Thanks to the tireless efforts of the Asgard HQ, Asgardian people and Kronor & Mixliander, representatives of Estonia, we were able to finally sign a bilateral peace supported by every counterpart sitting around the table. This peace was, as far as I know, the first one between Finland and Estonia ever conducted during the modern eRepublik with the "propose peace" option hidden deep in the mechanics. Plato has indeed made it hard and complicated for countries to sign peace without the war ending to wipe off either one or to the lack of common border. This peace lasted until April 10th, when the current Finnish government decided (unilaterally again, of course) to attack Pohja-Eesti. I greatly appreciate the commitment of all counterparts to the peace which we were able to build at least for a while. At this point TWO ceased to exist, and shortly after we witnessed the forming of Sirius and Aurora alliances, along with Asteria and its satellite, LETO.

After the successful negotiations with Estonia, we contacted Lithuania again in order to finally sign a peace treaty with them. We proceeded with the offer, even though Asgard had gained upper hand and liberated all the Swedish cores recently. After the December's positive discussions we were hopeful and determined to succeed with the negotiations. After few weeks of discussions and periods of waiting with the bureaucracy, Lithuania finally accepted the "white peace" Asgard HQ had proposed. According to the agreed plan, Swedish forces were supposed to lose the next auto-attack to the Lithuanian cores and vice versa.

Few days earlier we were contacted by the president of Republic of Macedonia (FYROM), who asked our permission to conduct an airstrike to Norway. Or well, in fact we were contacted by him after they had already proposed the airstrike to their congress. As we already had to cope with a war against UK and at the same time negotiate with Lithuania, the hands of Asgard HQ and the resources and forces of Asgard were effectively tied at that moment. Therefore we refused to accept the airstrike conducted to our lands with heavy hearts, as it would've only been a burden for us which we really couldn't carry back then. Furthermore, we found out that Macedonia (FYROM) and UK had (unofficially) agreed to not declare war on each other prior contacting Norwegian and Asgardian representatives. This further cemented our decision of not accepting the airstrike. Of course we thought our refusal would be enough to get the airstrike proposal voted down. After all, we had regarded Macedonia (FYROM) as an ally since the times of CoT. Still, we were soon disappointed, even twice. As Macedonia (FYROM) went ahead with the airstrike regardless of Asgard's decision, we at least thought we had just managed to secure the eastern front against Lithuania. However, as soon as the Swedish attack to Lithuanian cores was lost per our agreement with them and the Macedonian (FYROMian) airstrike battle opened, Lithuania immediately attacked Swedish core region of Scania and ultimately won it with heavy mobilization of troops and CO's. Needless to say, we in Asgard HQ were extremely disappointed, devastated and in a deep trouble.

Of course, we immediately sought help with the battles; naturally Asteria and especially Greece were more than happy to help us with the Macedonians (FYROMians). We gratefully accepted their help and were ultimately able to expel the invaders. This incident at last ensured our decision to lean towards pro-Serbian side, as they helped us and we felt comfortable with them. In February, after the successful cooperation with Asteria to get rid of Macedonia (FYROM), we signed a cooperation pact with Asteria. I have written a more detailed piece on the backgrounds of this treaty. I highly recommend you to read it to fully understand our motives and ambitions in Asgard regarding the matter.

In March, we strengthened our relations with Mother Russia to a whole new level. So many times internally thought, proposed and negotiated land swap with Finland’s eastern neighbor had finally succeeded. This move gave both parties an additional resource bonus: +20% to food production for Finland and +20% to weapon production for Russia. Neither counterpart lost bonuses as they still have another region in control with the lent resource. This demonstrates well the Asgard’s will to be friendly towards nations who are friendly towards us. No matter in which alliance you are, we are ready to sit down and discuss with you. But if we are ignored, pressured or stamped down, we will fight back and take what belongs to us, as the Macedonia (FYROM) case hopefully made clear.

After the successful land swap we were contacted by Lithuanians with a new peace proposal. We were a bit unsure if we even wanted to sign a peace with them after what they did to us earlier. However once we got Russia as a guarantor and Poland as an observer for the peace deal, we concluded it was finally the right time for the peace. After finally achieving a peace on the eastern front, Asgard turned her attention towards UK and Germark. Finland and Asgard had participated in a joint operation conducted with Asteria to invade UK. Ultimately UK managed to drive away Moldova and France from their southern cores, but Finland stayed in the northern parts of UK for a longer time. Repeatedly, we managed to conquer and hold a few English core regions - but still unable to move deeper to the island. At the same time, Sweden opened a front with Germark. Not to start another eternal war, but to test our strength against them and to attempt wiping them before the congress elections on 25th. It turned out pretty well in the en😛 we managed to wipe Danish regions sometimes and almost succeeded with German regions too. The war raged mostly on their side of the border. A bit over a week ago we signed a peace deal with our southern neighbors, bringing a complete peace to Fennoscandia.

Being able to fight evenly against countries like UK and Germark shows we've done something right. It shows we've taken right steps towards success when it comes to our foreign policy. The decisions made together back in December are now bearing the fruit. We reached an invaluable milestone on our path to Valhalla during March. First time ever both Finland and Sweden were able to hold 60/60 resource bonuses consisting of lands in Northern Ireland, Scotland, Leningrad Oblast and Germany including Berlin. This, my friends, is a result of the work of almost six months. This is a result achieved by the Asgardian people and everyone who has helped us on our long journey. This is the foreign political heritage of the people who made all this possible. Yes, I’m talking about you.

An invaluable part of being in power is to let go of it when the time comes. To let go of the power once you don't have the capability to give your best. That time for me is now. At least for a while.

Until the next time,
