eRepublik: a way of life.

Day 2,240, 05:37 Published in United Kingdom Belgium by mittekemuis

Hello there,

Just here to share some of my thoughts with you. Two things happened over the course of this week. I had a dream about eRepublik and a friend asked me a question on which I didn’t have a really good answer. I still don’t have a really good answer but it has been on my mind.

eRepublik the game.
I think it is safe to say that for all of us starting eRepublik was like joining a game. Do I hear someone shouting from behind his screen; “Of course because it is a game!”?
To tell you the truth I haven’t had so much fun ingame since a few weeks with the winter treats and the infinity fighting. I am even not even mad that I am totally broke because I simply fought too much. Something that I haven’t done since I was a newbie.

For most of the players erepublik is just that. Working, training, fighting and with a little luck they will read and comment in the media as well as in the feeds from their friends, Military unit and party. A small percentage off the players makes it on to the countries forum and/or IRC channels. I am not here to tell you that it is wrong to play this game this way. No, I have respect for people who can play this ways and stick to it and find the pleasure in the small things this game has to offer.

For me playing this game is more than just playing a game.

eRepublik is a way of life

I cannot speak for others but talking with players has made me believe I am not alone.
We don’t have all the same reasons to say that eRepublik is more than just a game.

There are players who still see it as just a game but one that can interfere in day to day life. Tanking all night, winning battles is one of the most common in that regard.

Some see erepublik as a place they can learn from, for real life purposes. I am thinking mainly politics but also learning people’s skills.

The most active irc users and, I take myself as example, see the game as an opportunity to meet and learn the most interesting people.

Failing in eRepublik is for some not an option as they treat this game the same way as they would be in their day to day lives, jobs and studies.

We have seen this game develop over the years from a heavy community decision based
game to a more individual one. Personal gains and glory have become more in the spotlight than ever before. Still unless you are willing to spend a lot of your own money you need the help of your fellow players to get somewhere in this game. It is these players who mainly see eRepublik as not just a game, that are their to support others and are here to make sure there is more fun available.

Sometimes we are the ones been made fun off. Sometimes we are are called out as having no real life outside eRepublik. Well people I do have a life and I am 100% sure others like me also have one. We just dedicate a lot of time and effort for various reasons but also because you could have fun playing your game.

So yes it makes me sad that these dedicated people start looking for other games to devote their time and energy on. They deserve more respect than they are getting now that is something I am sure of; Not only from their fellow players but also from the administration.

I could make a rather extensive list of people who I think deserve a thank you for some nice gaming hours. But at the risk of forgetting some I’ll say a big thank you to all of you.

Yours truly,
