Congress Elections - A Case in Counterpoint

Day 2,555, 08:10 Published in USA USA by Israel Stevens

A few days ago, Media Heavyweight Gnilraps published an article about Congress, and how Plato’s decision to remove voting by region helped bring about the downfall of the game. It’s called Congress Elections - A Case in Point and if you haven’t read it yet then you’re probably Serbian and should go read it right now.

Let me start by saying that Gnilraps is right. The way we vote for Congress right now is terrible. There isn’t any incentive for people to publish articles, or shout. And there certainly isn’t any drama left in the process.
Some of my favorite memories are staying up until 3am, running elections for the AMP. Going toe to toe with Pfeiffer and the USWP. Mostly we lost. But we won a few times and even tied one month. But the thrill of sending out snipers, of deciding which races were out of reach, of constantly updating the election pages is gone. All of it. And I miss that a lot.

For all it’s faults, the new system is best for the current state of the game.

For many months, we have been at, or near 60 regions (we’re currently at 61). This means that with 5 Top Parties, we would need a whopping 305 citizens to run for Congress in order to prevent any threats from running.

As a Party President, I can have a tough time finding 15 people to run, much less 61.

It would be a constant struggle for the bottom parties to fill up their ballot. The AMP would absolutely need help every single month. We’d be willing to work with the other parties and fill our ballot up. But what about having a rogue Top 5? Or a Top 5 that ‘doesn’t run with the herd’ so to speak. Would a party like that open their doors to outsiders so that they could prevent PTOs?

If a PTO did gain a spot in the election, they would be able to rally whatever voters they have here, and likely win. Even during the old system, there were almost always 2-3 threats on the ballot. And that was at the height of the game, or at least before we went off a cliff. There were many more citizens able to run for Congress, and finding blockers wasn’t nearly the challenge it would be today.

The current system isn’t ideal, but if gives the Party President complete authority over their party’s congressional lists. There can be no mistakes, only premeditated actions. The loss of excitement is unfortunate, and one that I miss a great deal. But it is worth the sacrifice to keep people who would do harm, out of Congress.
