Congress Elections - A Case in Counterpoint
Israel Stevens
A few days ago, Media Heavyweight Gnilraps published an article about Congress, and how Plato’s decision to remove voting by region helped bring about the downfall of the game. It’s called Congress Elections - A Case in Point and if you haven’t read it yet then you’re probably Serbian and should go read it right now.
Let me start by saying that Gnilraps is right. The way we vote for Congress right now is terrible. There isn’t any incentive for people to publish articles, or shout. And there certainly isn’t any drama left in the process.
Some of my favorite memories are staying up until 3am, running elections for the AMP. Going toe to toe with Pfeiffer and the USWP. Mostly we lost. But we won a few times and even tied one month. But the thrill of sending out snipers, of deciding which races were out of reach, of constantly updating the election pages is gone. All of it. And I miss that a lot.
For all it’s faults, the new system is best for the current state of the game.
For many months, we have been at, or near 60 regions (we’re currently at 61). This means that with 5 Top Parties, we would need a whopping 305 citizens to run for Congress in order to prevent any threats from running.
As a Party President, I can have a tough time finding 15 people to run, much less 61.
It would be a constant struggle for the bottom parties to fill up their ballot. The AMP would absolutely need help every single month. We’d be willing to work with the other parties and fill our ballot up. But what about having a rogue Top 5? Or a Top 5 that ‘doesn’t run with the herd’ so to speak. Would a party like that open their doors to outsiders so that they could prevent PTOs?
If a PTO did gain a spot in the election, they would be able to rally whatever voters they have here, and likely win. Even during the old system, there were almost always 2-3 threats on the ballot. And that was at the height of the game, or at least before we went off a cliff. There were many more citizens able to run for Congress, and finding blockers wasn’t nearly the challenge it would be today.
The current system isn’t ideal, but if gives the Party President complete authority over their party’s congressional lists. There can be no mistakes, only premeditated actions. The loss of excitement is unfortunate, and one that I miss a great deal. But it is worth the sacrifice to keep people who would do harm, out of Congress.

This is basically what I tell people who say that they miss the old form of Congressional elections. Had a long chat with Pf about this too once.
Voted/Endorsed. Enjoy the 5CC, I'm cheap that way.
I don't have 2 CC to rub together, so I guess that makes me cheap also....
The newish system sapped what made this game great. The days of late night sniping and tight knit communities have given way to utter shit. This isn't about retaining power in a browser game it is about fun. This system killed fun, it killed entertainment.
Signed,
Former Chief of Staff of these United States.
This is certainly true, though the fact that the counterpoint is basically that the game is too dead to be fun anymore is a depressing thought
Thanks for the good read 🙂
Agreed!
'The current system isn't ideal, but it gives the Party President complete authority over their party’s congressional lists.'
Operative words being 'complete control'...the very thing that created that election excitement -those 2/3 threats- is exactly what you say America must control.
'It would be a constant struggle for the bottom parties to fill up their ballot. The AMP would absolutely need help every single month.'
If the events of the last few days has not proven to you that it is the toxic environment of Congress that is driving citizens away from the game, you will never believe that 75% of Americans don't vote at all for the same reasons.
damn freaking stupid, the players arses you try to climb up, are the ones that begged Admins for this setup
The problem with nostalgia for old mechanics is that we too easily forget the problems they created when we actually had to use those mechanics. We have to trade the excitement for additional security.
You mean more security in retaining your position, ofc; in case you didn't notice that power is at the whim of your pfriend....
And what position are you implying that Pfeiffer has given me?
Party Presidents always had complete control over their party's Congressional lists... it was up to the party to secure the wins.

The only thing I tried to do for the first three years of playing this game was to run for congress from eVA, what I accomplished was the blocking system, which brought us our present system...If no one remembers it was the reset to the hex battles that was the start of the games decline! No one wants to remember, our elite government wanted a smaller population, seriously...think differently, you are either uninformed or just stupid...
Interesting how after the election system changed the game population crashed.
Enjoy ruling over your pile of ashes. with you and a few of fluffy's bestest bots
We are relics of a different time.
You are correct. Fewer regions would help. As would more active players. Mechanically, we would be screwed today. BUT it was so much more fun.
As it is, 5 people determine who may enter Congress. Maybe I've overlooked it but I don't see increased competition for the PP position in the T5.
This game is about fun. Not about retaining power.
