They do Halloween in NL?
On the 5th with Zwarte Piet or on the 31st?
yes they do halloween, what date i 'm not sure but its isn't with zwarte piet or saint nicks .
speaking for myself its everyday halloween , i offer my wife both a trick & a treat 😉
We only do halloween in recent years, and also only in parts of the Netherlands: It's still a growing tradition, based on the American one...
And the date of course is the same: (some time around) october 31st,
all hallow's eve.
but it doers originate from NL before it became big in the USA. In Medieval times it was called Saint Martin, and is still a custom in remote parts of our country. 😉
No,http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sint-Maarten_%28feest%29 is something entirely different. It may be celebrated in a similar manner in some regions, but it's really not the same.
We do celebrate Sintermerte (around 11 November) in Limburg. Oh and we do NOT celebrate Sintermerte on the 11th of November, because of carnival...
Our tradition of Sintermerte includes a mass in church, a short parade with paper lanterns and torches and at the back someone on a horse dressed as a Roman soldier. In the end there is a big pile of wood set on fire ("troshoop"). Oh and in the meantime there is music being played by the harmonie and fanfare. We have our own regional Sintermerte song. 🙂
Mandarin oranges and oliebollen are also being handed out as part of the tradition. We don't have children going past doors singing songs, nor any sweets being handed out. I believe that's more the custom in Holland.
great haha!
