Working is one of the most basic tasks in eRepublik and serves many purposes. From the point of view of the worker, you earn money to buy commodities (e.g. food, weapons, gifts and etc), it improves your skill points, after 30 days you earn a hard worker medal (and a treasure map) and more importantly 1 experience point every time you work.
Finding the right job
At first glance it may seem as the only factors to consider when choosing a job are skill and salary. I will explain in this guide, to find the ideal job you have to dig deeper.
Skill

Your skill points directly affect your productivity, i.e. the higher your skill points the more you produce. Every time you work your skill points increase, consequently the higher your skill points the more you will be valued/paid. There are 3 different skills to choose from:
Land skill: is required by companies which operate in the grain, diamonds, wood, oil or iron industry.
Manufacturing skill: is required by companies which operate in the weapon, food, gift or moving ticket industry.
Constructions skill: is required by companies which operate in the house, defence system or hospital industry.
When you choose an industry, it is best to specialize in one particular industry. Do not try to develop every skill! The best industry to work in depends on several factors, but after reading the salary section you will have a better idea.
Production Quality

On the job market the quality of a company is represented by the amount of stars (between 1 and 5) below its name. Companies who upgrade their production quality produce products of higher qualities. However, their productivity decreases, so higher quality goods require more work. As a result, each time an employee works their wellness will be decreased by 1 for each quality level of the company they work for (e.g. a Q3 company’s employee will lose 3 wellness every time he/she works).
Only players level 3 or above in London who are able to take advantage of the hospital in that region should work for companies with a quality level greater than 1.

Do not just go for the highest paid job. There are several reasons why a job that offers the highest wage may not be the job for you.
Economic Warfare: Wars exist in many forms as does economic warfare. Attacking job markets is one the most lethal form of economic warfare. Companies that offer very high or non-competitive wages are often traps. Employees apply hoping for good wages and secure employment often find they are unable to work due to no raw materials being available (does not apply to raw material companies; grain, diamonds, wood, oil or iron industry). These companies tend to prey on 0 skill level workers and have large amounts of dead/inactive trapped employees. Note: Companies can run of out raw materials due to poor management, and may warrant undue panicking. You can check if a company has any raw materials before applying by clicking on the company and scrolling down to the Raw Materials section.
Less apparent but more consequential attacks could involve undercutting competitors. Prolonged undercutting, often forces other companies in the same industry to stop trading, which eventually destabilizes the market.

More times than not, employees will wonder why they don’t get their full salary as advertised before applying for a job. This is because in every industry employees are required to pay at least 1% income tax. The amount of tax that should be paid is decided on in congress and is hugely dependent on the resources available in a country and government’s policies. Although there are only 3 skill requirements (land, manufacturing or construction) the relevant industries’ tax may not all be the same.
Example 1: An employee applies for a land skill job advertised for £2.50 in the diamonds industry, which has an income tax of 50%. Every time that employee works he/she gets paid £1.25.
Example 2: An employee applies for a land skill job advertised for £2.00 in the grain industry, which has an income tax of 20%. Every time that employee works he/she gets paid £1.60.
Other Employment Opportunities
Not all jobs are advertised or applicable to everyone. Nonetheless there are jobs available for those who want to work for a cause other than for financial gain.
Military Companies: These companies generally offer a basic wage, but in return give their workers a fair amount of the weapons that they produce. In the process they all help arm their country especially in time of war.
Communes: Non-profit companies that operate for the workers to take ownership and administration of their labour. Every worker in a commune has equal access to resources and compensated equally. Communes offer a socialist economic system within the basic confines of erepublik.

but why have 99% import tax on manufactured goods, when you could have 20% import taxes to stop prices getting over-inflated, but still be cheaper to produce at home?
