[FA] Dutch & Irish Friendship [FA]

Ireland & the Netherlands

Hello my friends.
As the new Irish ambassador for the Netherlands I’d like to start my term with an article about both countries. This article is mainly about sports, because fun things are a good way to strengthen a friendship.

First of all, i want to discuss a real Irish sport and a real Dutch Sport:

In the northern province of Friesland there’s a popular sport called Fierljeppen. It’s quite simple; you grab a pole and use it to jump over a ditch and if you fail, you’ll get muddy and wet. This sport is mainly practiced in the north of the Netherlands.

A real Irish sport is Gaelic Football. The first time I saw this I started yelling: HANDS!!! WHY ISN’T THAT BLOODY REFEREE WHISTLING?!! OMG! I must admit I still don’t fully understand the rules but it’s fun to watch nonetheless.

Now something we both like.

Football!! One of the most popular sports in the world with only a couple of dissident countries like the United States who refuse to acknowledge it’s greatness.
Ireland & the Netherlands have an interesting history when it comes to football.

Gelsenkirchen 1988. After losing against the USSR and a win against England, the Netherlands had to win against Ireland in order to progress to the semi-finals. A weird header by Wim Kieft in the last minutes made sure the Netherlands would eventually win it’s only big price ever: the European championship of 1988.

Dublin 2001. A few rounds to go in the qualifications for Japan/South-Korea 2002 but for Ireland it was clear that with Portugal leading the group, it had to beat the Netherlands in order to qualify. Jason McAteer scored the only goal in a deserved win for Ireland. The Irish qualified and the Netherlands most arrogant manager ever, Louis van Gaal resigned.

Finally for the people with a strong stomach, a real Ire-Dutch breakfast for champions:
