Why Be a Puppet?

Dancing for the Pupptmasters

Ever feel like you're just a puppet at the end of a set of strings, dancing to someone else's whims? That you're just a pimple pawn, a clown, a tool for another's plans or purpose? I often feel as if events in eRepublik are just beyond my ability to control or have any influence over. What's funny is that I supposedly am one of the "elites" with access to the highest levels of power in the eUSA and (unfortunately for some) am a respected member of the political class as a former eUSA President.

Despite this what stikes me as most interesting is not what occurs in eRep day to day, week to week and month to month but rather the how and why of it all; how players and citizens act, react and play. You see, events in eRep are like the passing hands of a clock. Countries declare war, wipe enemies and get wiped in turn. Alliances are forged and maintained, taxes collected and disbursed, weapons and food bought and consumed. This happens every day, in all corners of the eWorld. Just because we do it here in the eUSA doesn't make us special.

What can differentiate us from each other and, collectively, from other countries is how we do it and why. I used to write primarily about economics and society. With the econ module in stasis and the current slow grind of day in and day out battles I can only fixate on the how and why. It's the only element of the game in which I can find any story or differentiation.

Things That Make You Go Hmmmm...

I received a text message the other day, on Sunday, from an eRep player who shall remain unnamed that expressed "I think I am going to PTO the eUSA with Serbian help. What do you think?"

I think it's a crappy idea, that's what. Instead of finding a consensus for a personality or set of ideas this player has decided that seizing power through the most expedient method possible (for him) would be the fun path to take. There's most definitely a "how" to this story.

To me this is no different than threatening to jack with the Congressional Budget Office funding by proposing donations of 1 USD instead of the usual 99,999. Or wasting Congressional proposals on tax reforms or natural enemy declarations that have no consensus built among members of Congress. In short, "plays nicely with others" has meaning and exegesis.

The larger question behind all of this is "why?" Why would players put forth one story, a public story, of being a patriot and über-American yet at the same time plot so nefariously for power, going so far as to give citizenship to players from the one country that I could never see the eUSA aligning itself with?

I cannot answer these questions for they are beyond my capabilities of understanding. I can only surmise that it's for "teh lulz" or to settle some sort of perceived political score with someone or some group of people or to just be a bomb thrower. I am not a bomb chucker, at least I don't like to chuck them at those I hope will join me in fighting for the collective interests of the eUSA. Unfortunately too many lose sight of the human factor involved in the how and why, the human factor that makes the what happen. People and events become playthings, toys for the amusement of the puppet masters.

Yes it's a game. The difference, however, between this game and others is that the simple how and why can impact thousands of people.

Refuse to Be a Puppet

It's time to ask ourselves, do we in the New Conservative Party, really want our group to be recognized as an enabling tool for whatever flavor of the month or year comes along? Do we wish to be known as the callous bombthrowing party that gives no regard for the human factor involved? Are we going to choose the road that leads us into eternal conflict with the rest of the country or are we going to find a way to recognize the human factor? Are we going to reject the puppet masters and exert our collective voice?

This remains to be seen. I have seen political parties rise via the influence and leadership of powerful personalities. It's a common story: the UIP, the Libertarians, the AFP and many others have risen and waned as dynamic leaders came and went. What was missing? A lasting legacy.

It is my aim to provide a lasting legacy, something that will remain long after I am no longer actively involved in making the NCP a better, stronger part of the eUSA. This legacy will include:

1. IRC channel: #ncp (irc.rizon.net)
2. NCP Forums: http://ncp.eusaforums.com
3. A working party governing structure
4. A culture of success

Vote for PigInZen for NCP Party President. Refuse to be a puppet.
