2008-2009 NHL Playoffs update #2

Day 542, 05:37 Published in Canada Japan by dukecarlsbad

WOW! That’s how you describe the NHL's semi-final series. 4 series, 8 teams, only 4 move on! Here's the breakdown:

(1) Boston Bruins VS (6) Carolina Hurricanes
Can a storm destroy a city? Well, it was proved that a Hurricane swept through Boston last night and destroyed the Bruins hopes of a Cup run. This series seemed like David VS Goliath. Boston had dominated the entire season and easily handed the Montreal Canadiens a 4-0 series sweep in the first round. Carolina had battled long and hard against the Devils in a 7 game thriller.

This series proved contrary to popular belief. Backed by Cam Ward's stellar goaltending and lead by Eric Staal, The Hurricanes took a quick 3-1 series lead over the Boston Bruins after losing game 1 in Boston. The Bruins then played desperation hockey and won the next 2 games fairly easy to force a deciding game 7. Of note, only 2 games this series were decided by 1 goal. Carolina came through in overtime in game 7 by a rebound goal from Scott Walker past Tim Thomas. The Hurricanes move on and must be feeling the fatigue from playing two 7-game series so far these playoffs.

(2) Washington Capitals VS (5) Pittsburgh Penguins
Could Gary Bettman have planned a better series! Alex the Great VS Sid the Kid! Semin VS Malkin! Fleury VS Theod....Varlamov? That's right! This series had it all. Great players, great goals, great saves, great teams. Unfortunately, only one team could come out on top and once again, Bettman couldn't have asked for a better outcome: a game 7 featuring his two stars. The Penguins proved that playoff experience from last year's Stanley Cup defeat overcomes Washington potent offence. Game 7 was a blow out, 6-2 for the Pens. They move onto round 3 against the Hurricanes.

Western Conference
(2) Detroit Red Wings VS (😎 Anaheim Ducks
Detroit are the defending cup champs. Problem is, they met the previous years Cup champs in the Anaheim Ducks, a team with the same major components from their cup winning team. Nether team ever got a strangle hold on this series, as both each exchanged wins and losses through the first 6 games until a deciding game 7 in Mo-town. Detroit proved to be just too experienced and skilled as Dan Cleary finished off the Ducks with 3 minutes to go in the 3rd period of Game 7. The champs live to see another day.

(3) Vancouver Canucks VS (4) Chicago Blackhawks
Vancouver was Canada's lone remaining team and was looking to advance into the 3rd round since 1994. Unfortunately, they played the young and speedy Hawks. Although the first 4 games of this series was balanced and even, the Hawks proved too persistent and speedy for the Nucks’ defence and Luongo was MIA in the final game 6, allowing 7 goals in the loss. The Hawks win and will meet their toughest task: the Champion Red Wings.

In addition to my summary, I will provide my prediction for this 3rd round. Feel free to add your own in the comments.

Pens VS Hurricanes
I like the Pens overall game better than Carolina's. I say Pens in 6.

Red Wings VS BlackHawks
I think this is the biggest overmatch up in this years playoffs, next to Detroit VS BlueJackets. However, I can't deny Chicago's run so far in this year's playoffs. I will take the Red Wings in 5, provided their players remain healthy.
