1562: Birth of Kiyomasa Kato, Japanese warlord.
1587: Japanese strong-man Toyotomi Hideyoshi bans Christianity in Japan and orders all Christians to leave.
1869: The Japanese daimyo begin returning their land holdings to the emperor as part of the Meiji Restoration reforms.
1878: Birth of Masaharu Anesaki, Japanese philosopher and scholar.
1908: Kikunae Ikeda of the Tokyo Imperial University discovers that a key ingredient in Konbu soup stock is monosodium glutamate (MSG), and patents a process for manufacturing it.
1941: Japan announces a « protectorate » over Indochina.
1941: US president Roosevelt bans selling benzine/gasoline to Japan.
2014: Japan rejects a call by a UN watchdog to accept full blame for pressing Asian women into wartime sexual slavery in military brothels, saying it was not obligated to do so.

1939: Birth of Jun Henmi, Japanese author and poet.
1941: In response to the Japanese occupation of French Indo-China, US President Franklin D. Roosevelt orders the seizure of all Japanese assets in the United States and embargo on oil-export to Japan.
1945: The Potsdam Declaration or the Proclamation Defining Terms for Japanese Surrender (USA, China, Great-Britain) defining terms for Japanese surrender.
1945: The US Navy cruiser Indianapolis arrives at Tinian with the warhead for the Hiroshima atomic bomb.
1947: Conference of the Commonwealth at Canberra working on treaty of peace with Japan.
1961: Birth of Keiko Matsui, Japanese musician and composer.
1963: The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development votes to admit Japan.
2011: Death of Sakyo Komatsu, Japanese author.
2014: Japan releases declassified diplomatic archives indicating that both China and Taiwan started asserting their ownership of the Japanese-administered Senkaku islands only from 1971.

1280: Sogen Mugaku, founder of Engakuji temple arrives in Japan from China.
1549: Jesuit priest Francis Xavier’s ship reached Japan, but it is only until August 15 that he went ashore at Kagoshima.
1709: Nakamikado ascends to throne as 114th emperor of Japan.
1853: Death of Tokugawa Ieyoshi, 12st shogun.
1854: Birth of Takahashi Korekiyo, Japanese politician, 20th Prime Minister of Japan.
1905: Visiting US Secretary of State W.H Taft agree with Japanese Prime Minister Katsura to let Japan have free rein in Korea in return for Japan’s non-interference with the US in the Philippines.
1923: Birth of Masutatsu Oyama, founder of Japanese Kyokushin Karate.
1941: Japanese troops occupy Southern French Indo-China.
1972: Birth of Takako Fuji, Japanese actress.
1976: Former Japanese prime minister Kakuei Tanaka is arrested on suspicion of violating foreign exchange and foreign trade laws in connection with the Lockheed bribery scandals.

28th of July


1945: Japanese premier Suzuki decides to “mokusatsu” (to treat by silence, to ignore) the July 26 Potsdam Declaration call and conditions to surrender.
1960: Birth of Yoichi Takahashi, Japanese mangaka (comic author) of Captain Tsubasa and Hungry Heart Wild Striker.
1965: Death of Rampo Edogawa, Japanese author and critic.
1966: Birth of Shikao Suga, Japanese singer and songwriter.
1978: Birth of Hitomi Yaida, Japanese singer and songwriter.
2014: Japan announces additional sanctions on Russia for failing to defuse the crisis in Ukraine, where the recent downing of a Malaysia Airlines jet killed all 298 people aboard.
