Frequently Asked Questions:
How do the markets work?
The stocks are based on an algorithm that takes general trends from real world stocks. While the in-game stocks are not based solely on real world stocks, the fluctuations and patterns of the real stock market are accounted for and reproduced in the in-game version.
How is my money safe?
All transactions are logged through Google Docs. Each time you fill out the form, it is documented in a secure sheet (i.e. it can't be modified). All monetary transactions and holdings are double checked against this sheet, ensuring that nobody can falsely report anything. The sheet is managed by an entire team, and all information is checked by multiple people. In short, unless someone can hack Google, your cc is safe.
So far the Vortex has given out almost 12000 USD. Are you interested in cashing in and being part of our mob?
1. The game will start when the vortex sucks up the first contestant
2. This player will be awarded a prize, which will start at 5 USD
3. The player will have 60 seconds from the time of selection to decide to
A.) keep the prize, or
B.) throw the prize back
4. If the player throws the prize back, the vortex will suck up another random player who will be awarded a larger prize and again given 60 seconds to decide to keep or return.
5. Each player is eligible to be chosen every time, even if they already threw a prize back.
6. If a player chooses to keep a prize the vortex will implode and end the game unless a player in the room donates to match the prize kept.
Notes: Once you keep a prize you are ineligible to receive another, idle players will be given one chance to be picked and respond. If the timer runs out and you remain idle you will be removed.
We look forward to seeing all eUS citizens in #Vortex on Monday night at 1800 erep for your chance at riding the storm.
Stack the Wall is a program, which gives players gold for commenting on a daily shout in your MU feed made by one of our fine staff. These comments happen once a day for 7 days!
We currently do not have a requirement for Military Unit eligibility, but we will only do this for Military Units that show they have an active young player membership. The previously visited ones have programs in place for new members. Please before you ask to sign up ensure you have an active newer player base, due to the limitations on player level. If all your members are above level 30 this program is not for you. We want this to benefit the most new players possible, while also promoting the military units who are there to support them.
To participate fill out sign up form: http://tinyurl.com/STW-SignUp
Do you want gold but you aren't in the current Military Unit for Stacking the Wall? Well Bank Up 2 Strength Up is still in existence and we're giving out gold to anyone who qualifies.
How can I qualify?
1. Be a US citizen at or between levels 21-28
2. Do not belong to any anti-American group (Party or MU)
3. Visit and apply @ http://tinyurl.com/BU2SU-erep
4. MUST fill out that form DAILY, after using Training Ground(s), to receive Gold payment WEEKLY
5. MUST apply at least 5 out 7 days to get the gold reward for applying.
6. Bonus Gold for activity on eUSAforums and for Registered IRC users!

"Stock Markey"
In my experience, every stock market scheme in eRepublik has collapsed due to too much complexity or too much theft or both. Have no idea what it means that fluctuations and trends from real life are recreated in eRep. Does that even make sense? Did you see the movie? The "wolf of Wall Street" was a criminal.
Paint me... dubious.
inb4 you're filed as 'subversive'.
On a serious note, it'll be fun to see how it plays out - I might just invest small amounts for the lulz 🙂
The whole point is that the eUSA is securing your money. It's a national program, and therefore your money is less likely to be taken . Wolf of Wall Street was a movie and therefore fake, but since it was based off a real story I'll answer anyway. Just because there's issues in the real Wall Street doesn't mean there will be ones here. The laws he broke here are nonexistent in-game anyway since ours isn't as complex. Also, Google has a dictionary I'm sure the word fluctuate isn't hard to look up. The algorithm that generates stocks is irrelevant, but I thought it might make people feel better if they knew how I got my numbers. You don't need to understand it to trade stock. It's pretty simple otherwise. If you have any other questions, I'm happy to answer them.
I know what fluctuate means. That wasn't the question. My questions are: What is "an algorithm that generates stocks"? and What do "fluctuations and trends from real life" have to do with the valuation of equities in eRepublik? I have a few other questions too, but those would be good to start with.
Good luck by the way. I am sure it will be fun. I am just dubious based on previous experience.
You have every right to have your concerns, I completely understand that. The point is that it doesn't model eRepublik equities. Right now, I have an algorithm that pulls the value for a couple of real world stocks, varies them depending on the demand for the stocks by users right now, and gives the stock a value. This algorithm could be changed depending on what people think, but that's what it is right now.
Could you give us a breakdown of what each stock is tied to in RL? Would like to make a somewhat educated investment.
There is a new algorithm. I will detail it completely on Wednesday.
Corrected Title, Other Questions will be fielded by Indexinfinity. The Wolf of Wall Street was my attempt to draw on the popularity of the movie.
So what's the difference between the companies we know nothing about what we're investing in
Can you clarify? I don't understand what you're asking.
I think he is asking:
1. how is this anything like a stock market when choices, decisions, value, price and change have nothing to do with the performance of an eRep company or the eRep marketplace.
2. how does an investor choose between the stocks on offer when the only discriminator is price? Does the performance algorithm discriminate between the stocks i.e. risk/ industry/sector.
3. Isn't this "spin the wheel", where an investor has no ability to evaluate before choosing because the mechanism is not transparent.
Over time you can see how a stock fluctuates. Since this is opening day, you have no idea. The more this happens, the more you'll see the change of values and therefore you can make predictions on where a stock is going and buy/sell accordingly. As for the eRep company thing, I am trying to find a way to incorporate this, possibly with some news about each company or something like that, but right now that doesn't exist. Players are still capable of making an informed decision. If you play it right, there's no luck to it. I'm trying to make this better as we go, so please bear with me 🙂 if you have any suggestions I'd love to hear them.
If I have this right, players can't buy and sell to each other through the market. Price changes are not responsive to eRep market forces. Price changes are produced by an opaque mathematical relationship to some sort of RL market index. It is a curious experiment.
What happens to the money "invested"? Presumably it is put into a "pot" which does not increase in value because it is not producing any revenue. You can see that the "pot" will be smaller than the amount needed to pay all "investors", unless there is no increase in the value of their investment. Somehow, the "pot" has to get bigger. Or players have to lose value. See: Ponzi and Tulips.
Frankly, having the government as a backstop is attractive. The experiment might be fun if it were explained clearly.
Changes are coming soon. I think you're right, I'd rather have prices generated by the players. I didn't expect this much activity, but since we have it, the stocks will change based on the players. Going to add some other fun stuff as well, stay tuned for the Wednesday article 🙂

I have created a possible alternative to a government run exchange and looking forward to you ideas.

I have received cash from Vortex and gold from stack the wall as well as bu2su.
INSURGIO~
Should probably put how much each share is for each company.
Never mind, I'm a dumbass. The stock pricing is right there.
How does this algorithm, which is based off the general economic trend in RL, have certain stocks behave differently than others? Also, do these stocks correspond to specific stocks in RL, and if so, what are the corresponding stocks?
They respond to corresponding stocks in RL. This might change in the future, as there is actually enough demand to base stock fluctuation off of how much demand there is. Stay posted, I may release an article detailing changes.
Is there a link to our portfolio or the google doc where trades are logged? Wondering where I can view my investment.
There will be a new round of changes by this Wednesday. It should be one of them.
I'm going to be making some changes soon. The value of stocks will now be mainly based off of demand, as I think that will tie it more to the game. If anyone has other suggestions, please let me know.
So what stocks in RL will they correspond to even to a small degree?
None, I don't think I will add their weight as it's unrelated to eRep.
I think I may have some ideas on how to improve this.

See what you think.
Sorry to say it but I wouldn't support this concept. It wouldn't normally matter and people would let it be, except that if this is in some way backed by public funds then the public should have some say. As it is presented, it appears people put money in, the numbers randomly change, and if the numbers increase people can take out more money than what they put in. The difference is then a cost to the taxpayer, and becomes another useless barrier to lowering the high taxes.
Why not reveal what the stocks correspond to in RL? Clearly some people have that information and it would be an unfair advantage to know in advance what happens to those stocks.. even if they are 'officially' banned from using the system they will easily get around that.
There are different strategies for the sharemarket but it is usually not so much about guessing short term (day/week/month) fluctuations but more about analysing the businesses to find undervalued stocks, or ones that are expected to have long term (years) growth in the context of combined economic conditions, which we can't do when presented with randomly-changing numbers.
There are no details about who is on the "team" so how do we have any confidence in their credibility
What if it was a private ecompany, as I proposed above, with the government simply holding on to the funds as a way to provide some guarantee to investors?
I'm playing Devil's advocate here, but I think people will say it is less reliable in that case.. the only way to have the money really secure is if this were a feature built into the game (like the normal in-game product market)
True, but there is always risk in all investing, including in real life where I could lose everything, besides a limited guarantee by the government.
The eStock Market may not be for all people but maybe some?
there is not usually the risk that someone else is holding your investment account though, that would be very unwise in real life and the same here
I don’t really want to sound rude but there is no real way to put this nicely so I just need to lay it out there. While I cannot speak for how this stock market game is run I am working on a possible estock market where, as in real life, you would not be investing money for me to hold but instead purchasing a stock in a company which you would hope someone would then purchase from you at a higher price in the future.
You see in a real stock market, you don’t really have money sitting with anyone, you buy a stock and only get money is someone purchase it from you. In other words the market is simply an exchange so I am not sure you fully understand how a stock market works.

Please read the comments above. Your concerns have been voiced, and I'm making the adequate changes.
Too bad this shitty game never developed the economic module to the extent of banking and stock markets. Every part has regressed until it's only an exercise in button clicking and spending RL money on gold to buy weapons and enhancements.
I am in awe that the Department of the Interior would let such a poorly planned and executed program make its way to being published in an article, twice.
Drop the Stock Market program before you completely ruin the DoI's reputation.
I'm sorry you feel that way. If you see a problem, I encourage you to actively attempt to change it rather than simply criticize. Follow the program for a few weeks, and I think your opinion will change.

For this to be legit, you'd need to be able to look at the profitability and shit of the companies over time. Otherwise, you're just gambling imo
You will. This is only their IPO, which is actually guaranteed to either go up or remain the same. The people currently investing are gonna make good money.
Guaranteed because since stock value is based on change in demand, and the demand was originally nothing, there's nowhere to go but up. Beauty of IPO's.
We'll see, I hope it works out.
Well it could remain at 0, but again, either way you don't lose. I do too lol
See, if this game was open source and citizens were allowed to write a sweet little 'stock market' script tied to the RL markets....
Why we are switching to player demands.
Huh?
